It's always nice to get an inside perspective on these things. :)

@eat it I think the point is that writers of video games are given plenty of respect. The only problem is that they are called designers, not writers. Producers and Designers write the storyline, create the characters, give life to the project. Writers are the guys they hire to come in afterward and write dialogue, and most of it is that background stuff you hear when running through a game. That isn't flashy, nor is it well respected. It is also mundane and not a good use of a person's creativity.
Though admit it, there is always some comment some nobody character says in a game that makes you laugh....that is the writer.

I just bought and finished The Forgotten Sands last week for 10 bucks. I thought it was great and would have given it a much higher score than most did. It felt like a return to The Sands of Time and I really enjoyed my playthrough. This is one of those rare franchises that never really took a dip in quality or entertainment. Sure, some of the entries in the series are better than others, but every game has released with a lot of effort and care for the property. Great series. I hope it keeps going, especially after playing Forgotten Sands.

Such an iconic game that inspired many many games after. Jordan Mechner reminds me of the early George Lucas. An average guy with an idea and not a whole lot of assets to work with but still manages to create something beautiful. Cheers to Jordan Mechner and Prince of Persia!

Sounds to me like either Mechner has been away from game design for far too long, or is not willing to put his money where his mouth is, as they say.

Anytime Mechner wants to create a game from the ground up where writers are involved in the process every step of the way, or are even the leads in the project, there is nothing stopping him from going indie, and creating a game the way he feels games should be created.

I'm sure if he has a hard time getting an indie devteam together, there are more than a few existing indie devs who would be more than happy to work with him on the project and follow his lead.

Interesting story.
I've always like the Prince of Persia series, though admittedly, I haven't played the forgotten sands or the reboot-ish one.

neverwinter nights (by bioware) is one of my favorite rpgs ever. one huge reason i love it is the dialogue of npcs that you come across, as well as the conversational choices that you can use. alot of your conversation choices are redundant (several ways to just threaten someone) but they add flavor and alot of times they give me a chuckle.

also i think that since many of the lines in the game have no voiceovers, the writers had more freedom when writing (they didnt have to imagine somone saying it)

for example

[threat] have you payed your safety tax lately?

or (upon meeting a mysterious entity for the first time that is your only means of helping you cross an important river)

"Die, freak!!!"
