For gaming enthusiasts looking to capture direct-feed gameplay, there aren't many solutions out there, let alone affordable ones. Roxio has announced a $99 device for console gameplay video capture and a $49.99 software package for Windows PC video capture. The former handles resolutions up to 480p, while the PC option can capture "in HD at full screen resolutions." Oddly enough, the console capture device only lists Xbox 360 and PS3 compatibility, though the Wii does 480p just fine.
Both Game Capture releases feature a full software suite for editing videos, with swipes, fades, fonts and all of the other bells and whistles most would expect. There's also functionality that allows users to directly export their edited videos to YouTube.
The console capture kit will be on sale for $99.99 on March 24, while the PC capture software suite will retail for $49.99 and is slated for a Q2 launch.

Just to clear some things up. There is nothing that captures 1080p below $1,100. The closest thing is the BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle which promises to eventually deliver "when PCs are ready". They are currently working with the USB 3.0 chipset manufacturer, Fresco Logic, to make this happen.
That being said, this is a USB 2.0 device that only does 480p.

If I want to record on the console side I usually use a DVD-R, but the DVDs are a pain in the arse.
Might get this eventually just for the convenience, especially if it can support Gamecube somehow (probably through the Wii via component cables).

@Bighouse If you can the component cables for the gamecube (which like you said are the Wii ones) it will work fine. this is actually cheaper than getting a video capture card of the same and getting (ugh) FRAPS. FRAPS is a resource hog and doesn't have much of any editing with it not to mention the youtube direct upload capability. For hardware and software, the limitations aren't that bad for the price. For $200 you can get a device that does 1080i.

The Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 is still a much better option.
720p/1080i, does all the encoding onboard so you can use it with any old dinky computer, and it has remarkably reasonable file sizes for HD content.
If you want SD stuff, you want one of the old Hava devices. They're basically like a slingbox but will allow you to record. The big advantage to that (if you want SD content because your computer can't handle HD editing or something) is that it will allow you to play in HD, but record in SD. AFAIK, nothing else will do that and this roxio most likely forces you to play in SD if you want to capture in SD.

Never been that much into recording my own gameplay and have always preferred games that supported forms of gameplay video playback, ala Halo 3-Reach, Black Ops and Forza 3 where you can pause the game at any point and see what other things has gone on in a recent match. Always great to see how someone got a ridiculous kill or how you died/won/etc. from their point of view or some godly third person view.

Here's the thing about their kit for console capture: I can find an internal capture card that does HD capture in H.264 for the same price as their kit that only does SD. Admittedly, for me, their kit is better because said card I found only does HDMI in and HDMI out, and I still use an SD set, but the point still stands that I can find an equally affordable option that does HD.

Everybody knows this technology has been available for a while. I think this is just a simplified rig that allows beginners to operate easily.

For those that complain:
480p uses less bandwidth and is ideal for YouTube videos of those that show us n00bs how to do something.
There wasn't a cheap xbox/ps3 solution that was off the shelf for the masses. (and if there is, for those that seem to rather point out that fact without providing link goodness is common here)
I hope there is a fixed level so when you record your epic Gears Curb stomp, we don't have to hear DeathMetal screaming out our speakers.
I wish to thank those that contribute solutions and useful hint recordings to help those of us that get stuck or frustrated at a particular level or game.
Lastly, I hope to record the failure (glitches, bugs, stupid level and AI issues) that CliffyB puts out in his EPIC titles (eg. BulletStorm...) to us, his beta testers :)

I own this piece of kit (£80 in the UK).
The premise is quick and painless to to implement.
The software to edit the resulting video is smooth, and problem free, easy for even a complete and utter noob to put together some impressive videos.
If you fancy it, spend the cash, if you have no interest, why comment here?

The Roxio website says you'll still be able to play the console games in HD on your TV, but record in 480p. That sounds okay to me.
I have this Elgato video capture device for my Mac that only supports composite input, which means I have to put my 360 in SD mode in order to record. Having the recording in SD is fine (working with HD video takes up a lot of space and takes forever to upload on my connection). The problem is being forced to play in crappy SD on my TV as well.
So this sounds pretty good.

As a console owner who records PES replays with my Canon G10, this is a god-send. A must buy for me.
And people keep saying it's available for console users already, links would be helpful.

@KingOfGods I've been considering the Hauppauge 1212 unit myself, but I thought that it doesn't have Mac compatibility out of the box — There's a third party provider for the OS X software where you send them a serial number or some other proof of purchase and they provide a license key? It's linked to directly from Hauppauge's product page. Can you speak to this a little more because full Mac compatibility is key for me.
