Portal 2 developer Valve has landed some major new design talent in Doug Church, whose credits include Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock, Tomb Raider: Legend. Gamasutra confirmed the hire but Valve didn't comment on Church's new position or what projects he may be involved with.
Church most recently worked on the cancelled Stephen Spielberg / EA production Project LMNO.

Hiring a great designer = Cool
If this gets HL3/HL2: Ep3 out any faster = Great

In this case, one concern I have is that if they're hiring a renowned designer this late (assuming he's working on HL3), and if he has a major role in the development in the game, then that means it's years away from completion.

which wouldn't be surprising given the deliberate nature of valve and the fact that literally nothing has been announced regarding half-life 3.

Have we really gotten to the point where Valve is introduced only as "Portal 2 developer"?

"Half Life IP maintenance team" doesn't have the same ring to it.

So the guy responsible for half of my top-ten all time most favourite games has joined those who fill out the other half of the list. Isn't it dangerous to keep that much awesome in one place?

This is Great. Church has spent years in the industry making awesome games that didn't sell, and probably not getting paid that much (certainly not pay becoming one of the great visionaries of the industry).
This also goes to show just how hard it is to get hired by Valve.

Yeah if I recall correctly the guy who made Minecraft (Notch) was actually turned down by Valve. They were still pretty nice about it though and said don't give up on it. I'm kinda glad they turned him down though or else Minecraft might not ever get finished...

It's actually the other way around, Valve invited him over to their offices and offered him a job, but he turned it down. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun his reasoning was "I don't want to work for Valve, I want to BE Valve" in regards to Mojang of course.
