This is very sad. Transformers WFC was one of my dark horse favorites last year, thanks to its "bigger than expected" campaign and innovative multiplayer. I know that it underfperformed, but putting this talented studio on crap-licenseware is a sinful waste.

@AkumaFTW For those who automatically think crap when they hear movie tie-in. I've got three words for you. Chronicles of Riddick. Of course the flip side of that coin is Enter the Matrix. On the upside, we know that High Moon knows how to make a good Transformers game so I'm holding out hope.

@Riley Freeman

I feel as if this is what the majority of us want but Hollywood and activision see more dollar signs with a movie tie-in.

I have to say, this reviewer sounds pretty opinionated simply because its based off of the Michael Bay TF, but most reviews I've read are saying that this is based off of the same engine as TF War for Cybertron. That means that although we're playing as the TF Movie characters and in earth based locations, this should still have a fan-freaking-tastic game-play that War for Cybertron had. Personally I'm getting pretty excited for this.

@Gattsu

It's running on the same engine as WFC, Unreal Engine 3, but the gameplay segments looked far less interesting. Also, WFC's multiplayer was pretty great and I didn't get to see multiplayer for this.

Honestly, I calls it like I sees it -- and that's all I did here: see stuff. They wouldn't let me played and jumped around a lot during the demo, showing me some pretty mundane combat and, well, just read the preview. :)

I have to agree with you Gattsu on this one. When I read Dave's preview, I thought he was being kinda cynical. Most games can be distilled down into gameplay tropes: shooting bad dudes, move from point A to B, linear environment, etc. I also thought Justin was perhaps dismissively cynical on his Homefront review. Come on Joystiq, let's be cautiously optimistic.

I'm really looking forward to this game because WFC was so good. Vehicle strafing is cool and useful, since no other game lets you alternate between soldier/vehicle so seamlessly.

I have to disagree with Dave, Cybertron made for an awful setting. I'm usually not the guy who demands that games introduce levels whose look vary drastically every few minutes or hate backtracking through the same level but, the look of Cybertron grew very boring, repetitive, and uninteresting early on. By the end of the game I was begging for a sequence set on Earth just to change things up a little.

is anyone now kinda scared for war for cybertron 2 that it might be from a different dev, or suck completely?

or is High Moon big enough for multiple games at once?

"licensed prequel to Bay's upcoming third Transformers movie."

1. licensed movie game
2. movie game tie-in prequel
3. Michael Bay

There was so much dread in this statement I almost vomited all over my keyboard.

You know, everyone seems to be reacting to this game like they are ignoring WfC. How are they ignoring it? They are working on a different game in a different setting. For all we know, they are working on WfC2 right now parallel with this game. It's most likely going to be a decent game, just not as inspired as WfC.

High Moon Studios, here's a news flash. Bayformers suck.

It's really disappointing that they are doing this game (and apparently doing a crappy job of it, according to this preview article). WFC was sooooo good. This is like a slap in the face.

"The combat looked pretty mundane -- each level was a linear path, with the occasional enemy ambush to mix up the plodding pace... it was all very formulaic. Each Transformer had a separate special weapon, but in the end it was just robots shooting at other robots."

Wait, isn't that what War for Cybertron was in its entirely?

Quite frankly, I think War for Cybertron was softballed by the press, gamers and fans due to the belief that it was a Generation 1 (1980s Transformers) game, and to a lesser extent, as part of the mostly justified negative reaction to Revenge of the Fallen (though people do tend to go overboard about it, like the movie killed their mother or something).

WFC was pretty cool but, as it was obviously set in Cybertron, environments were waaaaaaay to monotone. They have the possibility to fix that here... let's hope for the best.
