I still remember the NPD threads here at Joystiq back in 2007 / 2008... good times.

@FernandoRocker

At least we still have the NeoGAF NPD threads. Those are always comedy gold.

Honestly this is a great opportunity for anyone who feel they could do a better job. There is a lot of serious money in data reporting. NPD obviously isn't capable of fufilling that need as their reports get less and less useful each year.

I look at the top ten software sales and it gives me nothing. Consoles all smashed together with no numbers behind them and only the top ten? I realize subscribers probably see much more but a report seems important only in the amount of people who read it.

NPD is trying to please company's by not showing true retail sales,so it won't look so bad to company's investors

they're not a nonprofit and don't make a dime out of kids on the internet viewing their data. i'd say the switch was sort of inevitable.

This definitely seems like a statement to save face with an industry that is changing faster than what NPD is willing to adapt to.

"We continue to progress those plans but at this time we're not changing anything with regard to what we're reporting..."

That's incorrect considering how NPD stopped allowing subscribers to report on numbers for anything below the top 5. That didn't seem necessary at all, and now people are starting to wonder if NPD reports for the videogame industry are still necessary.

It's a similar situation to TV ratings in the USA. A lot of people do not have Neilsen boxes that report what they are watching and a lot of people have started using DVR and internet to watch their favorite shows. For some reason, however, the TV industry still relies heavily on Neilsen ratings to judge advertisement dollars and show popularity.

I don't have a Neilsen box, so nothing I watch gets recorded. I also buy some of my games digitally, which means those aren't getting reported either.

I wonder if it would be possible for the ESA to work something out to make industry sales more relevant.

"we will continue to report on new physical retail sales on a monthly basis. This represents about 60-70 percent of the consumer spend on the industry."

So their reporting is 40 -30 percent inaccurate?

@RyogaVee

Exactly. I'm surprised myself about how quickly the landscape has changed. Just a few years ago, I would have scoffed at the idea of downloading a game that was available in a box with a disc and manual. Now, the convenience is just too tempting, and I'm giving in sometimes.

The NPD doesn't seem willing or able to stay with the changes. They risk becoming obsolete. They're already 30-40% wrong, as you said.

I totally agree,and the exception of Dead Space those titles didn't stop EA from losing over 300 million dollars.

NPD was never particularly reliable for the market they did actually track. Them getting caught in a shifting industry is just going to make them less relevant than they already were

I knew right away Sli wrote this up. He's the one who always brings this point up on the X3F podcast about the NPDs not taking into consideration downloads and such when they tally up the sales.
