@Rizraz same here. In the face of the ones (can you hear me, Kotaku?) that do nothing but blindly (and often falsely) bashing them.

Yea I support a company a hell of a lot more when they just donate to a cause instead of spending half that money on advertising their donation.

@NightlyNews Big guys like Square Enix can afford to do that. Companies like Aksys really can't, so the fact they're donating 100% or 50% of the profits is still a hell of a lot more than most companies are doing.

Plus if it increases market penetration for them by selling some more units, that's great, because they can use those new customers and revenue. I won't begrudge them that.

@onan Just in case you misinterpreted it. I was complementing Square Enix on merely letting the press flatter their good taste rather than waste the money spreading the word around that they are donating money.

The media likes chivalry and it gives more to the cause so would like to see more companies follow suit.

I don't think SE is giving all their profits to the cause unfortunately though. They are donating and soliciting donations from their user base. Commemorable none the less.

@NightlyNews "nd will also solicit donations through "select Square Enix online services and the amusement facilities that TAITO operates across Japan.""

Maybe they are letting people know they can donate through them?

@NightlyNews Really, half their money? That seems like an awful lot of money to spend on a couple of press releases.

Very generous and heart warming. I hope more follow suit. What is happening there is rough and it's going to take a while for everything to get back on track.

@ForeverAndEver If you were trying to say much love with a less-than symbol, you should be aware the parser on Joystiq's comment system is going to delete everything after that because it's expecting some sort of HTML argument.

Dude, go f*cking read something and educate yourself before spouting your wannabe edgy, ignorant political bullshit. So Square-Enix is donating the equivalent about 1.2 million dollars. That's really great. Did you know that Walmart has already donated 5 million in cash and supplies? That Microsoft and Boeing have both pledged 2 million? That Starbucks has pledged 1.2 million? That's strange, those are all American companies. Oh yeah, here's an interesting tidbit:

"Late Thursday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center identified $137 million in cash and in-kind contributions -- products and services -- from businesses, rather than individual donors, that would make this the fourth-largest corporate response to a natural disaster."

I get that America has its faults, but helping countries out after a natural disaster isn't generally one of them. Aside from business donations, it's not like there aren't 10,000 + American troops working around the clock and donating what will amount to billions of dollars worth of fuel, time, and supplies in clean up and rescue efforts.

Which brings us to the question, what have you done?

Amen sandwich. Looking beyond countries and their faults. We all together between individuals, countries, and corporations have to get together and help the citizens of japan. They are in disaster of horrid proportions. While I could only do so much I know my 10 dollar donation to the red cross will in some way shape or form help japan. While my hands are not there lifting the rubble searching for survivors, carrying much needed supply's, or helping people reach safe points. I know the donation I put in along with that of many others will help.

So before you question what American corporations or businesses are doing. Look at yourself and ask yourself what are you doing?

Woah woah, look I don't pay attention to the news because of all the garbage that is put out of the media. But thank you for bringing me the attention that American companies are doing this. I would donate but I really have no money to speak of. I haven't boughten a game in months. Again I regret my comment.

Its amazing that many of our favorite companies are doing this. It really shows that Humans will stick up for eachother in times of need instead of ripping each others throats out.

****on a related note****
Bungie is also doing a Japan Relief effort as well

Going on to a related topic, I should let you all know that Bungie is also aiding Japan with money raised from selling wristbands. The wristbands don't even have any sort of Bungie reference implanted on them.

In my opinion, I think it's just lovely that even huge game developers are putting forward their pennies for such a vital cause.

I just saw that not to long ago. I purchased a few myself. We all have to chip in, in what ever way we can to help out in this situation.

It's not just effecting japan, its effecting the world.

I just wish things like this could transcend the realm of the monetary system. Think about it. Money is imaginary. But the suffering in Japan and the real means to help are not.

That big companies can forget about selfishly trying to make a profit at a time like this and just help out is really cool. It's times like these when the heartless are truely revealed. No, I'm not talking about Kingdom Hearts, but I just realised I made that pun, and it even relates to Square Enix. Japan's state may be irreversible, but at least they have the support of all of us (bar that one evil person).
