Blizzard pro-cannibalism: Diablo 3 could eat into World of Warcraft audience
34
While Blizzard cofounder Frank Pearce is unexpectedly bullish on EA's prospects with its Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO – and of course Blizz's own next-gen, untitled "Titan" MMO – he sees another potential product that could cannibalize his massive World of Warcraft audience. "I think even a shorter-term concern is whether or not we might see cannibalization of WoW players from Diablo 3 when we launch it, because it's a similar type of experience," Pearce told Gamasutra. "Not exactly similar, but it's that RPG feel."
While Diablo 3 currently has no release date – it's possible it may not make it out this year – Pearce said "it's better we cannibalize them ourselves than let someone else do that, because if we cannibalize them ourselves, they're still a Blizzard customer." And that, ladies and gentlemen, is maybe the only kind of cannibalism that we can endorse.

Could? It absolutely *will* take giant chunks out of WoW's playerbase.
Diablo 3's gonna rock the game world, without a doubt. Can't wait!

A real Blizzard customer multi-boxes WOW from breakfast to lunch, Diable III from lunch to dinner, then splits the time from dinner until breakfast for WOW, Diablo III, and Starcraft II.

Blizzard: The company that believes if they release a game in the same very broad genre as their own it will take players away from one of their games more than a game in the same small sub-genre.

I can tell you now that as a Diablo 2 player, the main similarity between the games is the itemization, not the "rpg feel".

But Diablo is nothing like WoW...
This doesn't bode well.

There are actually some unmistakable similarities between D2 and WoW. The talent/skill trees look exactly the same, the game is based on itemization, and both are pretty immersive. The key is the itemization though as I said in my other post. That is what drives both games. Very few non-mmo's do itemization on the level Diablo 3 is going to.

Eh, I thought Starcraft 2 looked like garbage until I actually played it and realized it's awesome. From screens I'm not super excited about Diablo 3, but I still have faith in Blizzard to deliver epic games.

I've played it, and loved it.
It's definitely the same deal as SC2 where you have to play it to understand how good it is. I think the words visceral and engaging describe the game well. You don't get it from the gameplay videos or screenshots but the game is incredibility fast paced and fun. It also requires some actual participation in each fight unlike Diablo 2. You have to be aware of what is on screen and know how to counter it. Be it an ability or some micro/positioning.

I'm pretty sure they don't need to worry about Diablo cannibalizing WoW's audience. Cataclysm's done that just fine already with the piece of crap it is. Hell, my entire guild unsubbed after years of playing, and I know we're not the only ones.
Good riddance to Blizzard.

Doubt it will eat anything. WoW players hardly even know what Starcraft is not to mention Diablo 3.

What the hell is this? PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT put "WOW" in the same sentence with the same words of "Diablo 3" They are and hopefully will never similar. Diablo series is its own Elite category. Please keep it that way!!!!!!

Too bad Diablo has never been anymore of a real RPG than WoW. Diablo is an item hunt action game. The only RPG elements it has are the ability to advance you character which WoW has plenty of.
The only way for someone to discover what is a real RPG is to go play the Baldur's Gate series.
