It's been a good long time since we lost the kind of party-stamina required to persevere through a day-long rager, but perhaps you possess the endurance required to make this invitation more inviting: Nintendo's throwing a lengthy soiree to celebrate the launch of the 3DS this weekend in New York City. You can stop by the Best Buy in Union Square starting at noon Saturday to check out the new handheld before queueing up to purchase one between midnight and 2AM.
Now, considering you'll be indulging in 14 whole hours of bacchanalian delights, you'll need to come prepared -- we suggest applying multiple coats of sunscreen throughout the day, remaining well hydrated, and bringing along some extra eyeballs. On the off-chance you play the 3DS for 14 hours straight, you'll probably end up disintegrating your corneas.

How much is that going to cost? And how much of it could be helping people in Japan right now?
Nintendo has done their share but that doesn't mean it's enough.

@koehler83 Why are you on the internet when you could be using your monthly charge helping Japan instead?
Everyone's helping Japan, they don't have to dedicate ALL of their money to be helping, any company whose goal isn't to make money isn't following a good business model.

Also, money can only do so much. With your inane logic, in order to put out a fire all you need to do is throw money on it. That would surely put out the fire...
No, let's use our brains, shall we?
Let's see, it's still extremely difficult and even dangerous to reach survivors. It seems where the aid needs to be reached there's no roads. Go figure that would happen after a disaster.
So, we have all this money waiting to be used but if we buy the supplies now, much of it won't be any good by the time it's deployed.
So... do they need money or actual people to help rebuild the infrastructure and distribute aid...
Hmm... yeah that's a tough one.
Japan must be poor, oh wait... no... 3rd largest GDP....
Hmm... Japan must be all on their own, oh wait, no... almost every country is sending aid and military/civilian support...
AH! I should throw money in the air and hope it lands in Japan! YES! that'll let me sleep better at night... wait! even better!
I'll complain on the internet that Japanese companies are still trying to operate after a devastating blow. Keeping their employees secured and trying to continue to make money so they can pay their employees, all the while constantly being aware of Japan's situation and knowing that when needed they'll step in again.
YES!!! AHAHAHAHHA! I WON!!

Ugh this always happens during disasters. While I like how people are donating and volunteering to help, theres always one person that over-does it and demands absolutley everone has to donate. If not, they're treated like some sort of heretic.

Well since you work you don't need your pay check. You could also sell your house and donate the money to Japan. then you could pawn everything and donate what you got.

@jph89 Not only Pilot Wings but there's also the AR games, which I'm sure will impress a lot of people. Then there's Steel Diver, Lego StarWars 3 (which is a popular series), Super Monkey Ball(Again fairly popular), Nintendogs(which is also popular), Samurai Warriors, and Rayman 3D.
I don't get why everyone acts like all there is is pilotwings and SSF4, and for a while it was just SSF4. Sure some of 'em are remakes and none are stellar AAA titles, but no console has a good launch. Everyone finds a flaw with it.
Personally for me, al those games above, except SSF4, plus Bust-A-Move universe I all want.

I think Nintendo blew it by not having Kid Icarus at launch.
Of course, Nintendo will come out of this unscathed. There was a day when launch lineups meant something.
Remember how the Saturn's lack of anything but Virtua Fighter at launch screwed it over? Yeah.

Well don't forget we're also in an age of backwards compatibility. Since I got my Japanese 3DS I haven't felt compelled to buy any games for it yet. But I have been enjoying DS games on it. They'll tie me over till the real games come out and I imagine well past the time 3DS games have ceased production and the next machine is out.
So it's not like there will be nothing to play on launch day. It just means it will have some, no matter how small, purpose.
Personally I thought they blew it when they said Ocarina of Time wasn't a launch title too. If they launched with both that (a classic but in 3D) and a long-awaited sequel (Kid Icarus) then it would have been a truly tremendous launch. As it stands only the hardware itself will shine next week.

Don't forget the Saturn was a very hard console to program for. Most devs abandoned it because it was so hard, and that Nintendo kept releasing console upgrades. So most devs thought it wasn't worth it because a new console upgrade would come otu soon. See Sega Master System, Gen, CD, then Saturn. Most devs lost faith in Sega due to that, and the hard ass system to program for.

Also because now we know we're getting these at launch but say 6 months to a year in we know we're getting good games. With the NES, SNES,TGX, and etc... we didn't know what was coming out six months later to a year and a half later like we do now. We can see "Oh hey new Kingdom Hearts game. Buy it now in prep for it." then pick up games on the way.

I don't like KH to begin with, but the pretentious title for the 3DS one makes it even more avoidable.

At Best Buy? Couldn't they have done it at their store in Rockefeller Center, or is that a little too small for the masses they expect?

It is a tad tiny. Although there is a bunch of open space right outside that they could use / and have used for other events.
May best buy shelled out some dough to have the debut there : / ?

I dunno, they could move the shelves away and keep the area open for both floors and they'd have a pretty big space to work with. Though it still might not be enough.

I can only assume you're getting all three regions' systems thanks to the thing Nintendo stubbornly refuses to integrate that PSP had with being region free. Shame you had to spend so much on multiples of one system to get all the options.

I think the 3ds will be just as popular as the Wii. I am looking forward to it, and think it has a ton of potential. I am not a portable gamer at all, and the 3ds is very exciting to me. Getting mine on Sunday, and not going to try it before I get it. It's hard to comprehend how the 3d effect will be compared to glasses. If it works like they say, then Nintendo are probably Warlocks that create technology using magic.

It's exactly the same as the cinema - just smaller. Things don't FLY OUT at you but it does make it seem like the screen is coming out at you...
imagine the game taking place in a cube with it's middle plane set where the screen is.
It's quite amazing! It'll be equally as popular as the Wii and DS. I can imagine it doing better.

Unlikely, since the battery will die before you hit 5 hours. They'll probably use powered security tethers to help obfuscate that fact.

There is a crazy thing called an outlet. Energy surges from it into your device.
Piss off and go troll somewhere else. This is the 3DS's week to shine.

The rest of your comment didn't unsay your statement of "I think glasses-free 3D is a fad". If that's not what you meant, then say something else.
That said, I agree that the 3D on the 3DS is disappointing. It annoyed my eyes pretty quickly. I can't imagine playing it at length. Maybe a 3DS lite will be cool, but otherwise this will be the first Nintendo handheld I'll be skipping since the original Gameboy (which I only skipped because I had no moneys).

As the "fad" grew and grew, the competitors took notice and are now attempting to take a bite out of that apple.
