What? A Kinect story that doesn't involve bizarre hacks that make one question where we're heading as human beings?

Seriously, though, this is great to hear that even a game device can be used for something beneficial or educational. I have a newfound respect for the quirky little peripheral now.

@Red Runner it is only a game device now. Not for much longer at all.

It's cool how Kinect fails to be useful in terms of gaming, but is so helpful in terms of helping people improve everyday life. If only Microsoft would understand this and market Kinect towards everyone with a PC instead of just towards gamers.

@Osnaz

I think people and in some respect gamers are looking at it rather one sided. While it initially was released for a game system, its overall usage is exactly what Microsoft wanted. Deep down this is expanding both the longevity and usage of the Kinect system well beyond just the Xbox 360. The system will both live and die but the Kinect at this rate will continue to survive beyond the 360's life span.

Game developers and publishers are beginning to tap into its game producing power and may take a bit longer for it to actually create enjoyable games on a steady basis. Once again this is all apart of Microsoft plans. They are looking to use this as Xbox 360 lifespan extender giving it several more years to create games for the system. While we see hacks, system usage, and various other dynamic things by non game producing companies and people, E3 is not to far away. I'm sure we will see several new and exciting games in production for the Kinect. This was a risk, and a chance Microsoft took and it looks like they hit off big with it well beyond simply with just gaming.

Um, okay. Couldn't you achieve the same effect by throwing things at students and have them shout DUCK and JUMP, and save a few hundred £?

Or how about we go the Mega Man 8 route.

The irony being I couldn't possibly have made the sarcasm any more transparent. Talking like a jabbering idiot while making fun of someone else's speech capabilities, someone took that seriously? Was I too accurate? Oh internet, when will you ever learn.

What's worse is it wouldn't be just one teacher approving it. I'm sure they had a whole board decide on what to spend the budget on. The fact that several people "okayed" this is beyond my realm of intelligence...perhaps that's what I get for not growing up learning with a Kinect...

Learn to read. The source clearly says that this was Microsoft funded, so the school board didn't pay for anything.

Teachers didn't "fall" for anything because they didn't pay for anything. These Xbox's/Kinect's were GIVEN to this school free of charge by Microsoft. To quote the source article "A brain-child of Microsoft, and funded by Microsoft's Live@Edu..."

Keep on trollin' along guys.

Oh whew, it's good to know only Microsoft would be dumb enough to think the Kinect is somehow educational.

@soorma the new Manifest Destiny is to take over through culture and language. The US is not interested in them maintaining their native tongues.

The Playstation Move would have been a much better device to use.

(I'm obviously joking).
