Team Fortress 2 hats help Japan relief effort
36
Valve is currently supporting the Japanese relief effort with three limited edition hats in the Team Fortress 2 store. The Mann Co. is offering the "Humanitarian's Hachimaki" for $7.99, the "Benefactor's Kanmuri" for $19.99 and the honorable "Magnanimous Monarch" for the big relief spender at $99.99. The hats can be equipped by all classes, but can't be traded nor used in crafting.
The items will be available until April 6 and all proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross' Japanese disaster relief fund. If you don't like hats, the Red Cross has a handy site to which you can donate directly.
[Thanks, Tyler]

I figured this would be coming sooner or later. I don't buy hats. Ever. But I'll be buying these. Cheers, Valve.

@Mehbah: It's not that I'm anti-hat, it's that I'm anti-Mann Co. prices. I don't buy them because I think, for digital items, they're too expensive. But if the money's going to the relief efforts for Japan? Well, that's something I can get behind.
I've already made a donation to the Red Cross, but I will be making another by way of these hats. Because Valve is awesome for doing this.

@Mehbah: Hats are fine. I like them as much as the next guy, but I just don't buy them from the Mann Co. store or preorder games I don't want just so I can get hats. However, you are 100% correct that I absolutely support companies like Valve and Capcom for donating proceeds of a product to help with disaster relief. That's the point.

Looks kinda like the items they made as tie-in for Shogun Total War 2.

Yeah I was thinking that too... honestly I wouldn't be surprised it they were, but Valve decided to nix the game tie-in part and say they were for Japanese relief. It's a good thing in any case, but I seriously doubt these were made just now.

TF2 hats are so expensive. I wonder how many people actually buy hats from the store...
"Hats" off to Valve, indeed. Japan needs all the help they can get.

If these were like $5-$15 I'd buy, and decent looking on the characters. Oh well, just donating my self instead.

I agree, and I plan on picking that one up. The $100 one I think is a bit of a jump, especially for an ugly hat.

im all for helping out, but it makes you wonder with so many companies jumping to help out- how much is really going to japan?

Think about it this way:
Japan is what would be considered the capital of modern gaming. Depending on what company you are, and who you work with, you could have direct lines to them.
With those direct lines, you find out how truly bad things are over there, and want to help.
It's like finding out your brother needs a new kidney, only your "brother"'s Japan, and "you" are the gaming industry.

On one hand I think its admirable that so many game companies are helping out with the quake relief efforts. But on the other, I have to wonder why the millions of African war dead in the past 15 years resulted in so little sympathy. There was also a huge tsunami in Asia years ago that killed 100,000+, and a big earthquake in China. Both events dwarfed the Japan situation.
I guess Africa and China are seen as either useless or as enemies, while Japan is a harmless friend.

when i donate i do background checks for this sort of thing, you have the RIGHT to ask a company to disclose their finical aid and who it goes to and what it is used for. Look at Haiti and Wyclef, he used funds from his donations to set up a benefit concert. Meanwhile he has millions in his own personal account. what an as$wipe

After 9/11, someone noticed the money The Salvation Army was giving out was less than 1/3rd of the money it took in.
An investigation was launched, and they found out they were using most of it to upgrade all of their computer systems in their headquarters.

part of me finds it pretty pathetic that we have to almost "bribe" people to donate money to help those who are going through what to them is hell... i donated twice already with no incentive besides for the well being of the people in Japan. Don't get my words twisted, hats are cool and all but it makes me think that maybe we should just donate to donate and not expect to get something out of it.

Are you really doing this out of altruism? There have been many great tragic events in the past. Do you donate to them all?
