@acme64 There's nothing to decode. They don't have any special code embedded to them. The 3DS is just programmed to recoginize the pictures on the cards.

@Dark Archon PSN Archonik XBL Dar
I was under the impression it worked something like the ereaders, or QR codes. So if nintendo releases new cards, they'd have to update the system so it can recognize them?

@acme64 Examining my AR cards they don't have anything special on them. Nintendo would probably need to do a system update if they release new cards.

Not only do I want new cards but I would like something to keep them in for travel, safer than the paper case they come in.

Print off disposable cards. That way you don't have to worry if they get wrecked in transit.

Doesn't using your phone defeat the purpose, since the AR stuff will appear to float above the tabletop?

Don't think you understood what I was saying. The AR effect relies on a large flat surface. The card lays flat on this surface. using your phone elevates the "card" so that the AR polygons are on a different plane.

Just make paper copies of the cards.

Are these cards not included with the system? I guess I'm confused as to why you would need them on your smartphone, unless you forgot the cards.

@bensmith91 They are included with the system, but I'd rather not worry about carrying them around with my 3DS. Also, you need plenty of light to play with the printed cards, so using a smartphone/tablet screen is nice for playing AR games in darker situations.

The idea of using a smartphone screen isn't mine, though. I just don't have an Android device, so I did my own thing!

Save all images to iPod, don't have to worry about being online.

Additionally, being able to print these out seems more convenient, personally. I need larger cards, not smaller, and having a few on A3 paper instead of these wonderful (but easy to destroy/lose) cards is a better idea.

Too bad this technology hadn't been perfected for the Gameboy Color when the Pokemon trading card video game was around so you could just use your real decks. Like in Eye of Judgement. Of course the internet would just make paying money to collect the real cards pointless but whatever.

Does Nintendo plan on releasing more of these AR cards in the future or is it limited to just the ones packed in with the system?

@maemikemae

You'd have to think about how they would distribute them. It's possible Nintendo could make special cards and distribute them through specific software. For instance, you could get an Ocarina of Time-like Link AR card with OoT 3DS. Or Mario characters with Mario 3DS games... That way system updates could come on 3DS software, or they could allow 3rd parties to install 'plugin' AR Card support, but that's highly doubtful.

I don't think Nintendo would get very far just selling packs of 3DS cards, either. I think they learnt that lesson from the E-Reader.

I just downloaded the pics to my iPhone for quick access and play in darker areas.

These cards just choose the pic and render it, I'm sure devs could opt to use the features..

Let's get a YGO board!

This site is better than the Android app now because the Android dev put ads on the screen.

Ok, these AR cards are nothing special. Actually, if these are anything like the feed the beast big foot by slimjim the image has little to do with it. At the bottom of every card is a set of text, this is what the machine is reading and detecting the scew of and size of, the actual bounding box of the image has little to do with it, its there for referance only.

Future of D&D - AR card recognition?

I don't actually play D&D, but it'd be an interesting thing to see.
