Lets see how they fare against Steam

Its not really fighting against Steam, that's a battle I think they know they'll lose. It's really about getting into the market early enough before it really takes off. Sure, Steam is very popular, but digitally distributed games isn't quite there yet.

If anyone has the money to integrate digital and retail games, it's Gamestop

@HybridPara. And a year or so from now you will be using the old joystiq breakup image instead of the heart merger one.

@Lerkero I really like Steam, but don't get me wrong, they are putting some prices on games that really makes me move to some other plataform... The Witcher 2 is one example, on Steam is a normal version "meh"... but on D2D, is the deluxe sbrubles version with lasers and thousands of bonus contents... for the SAME PRICE.

Also, hot pursuit this weekend for 14,95? Steam still the same price? For shame, Steam... for shame...

Is StarDock going to stick with Impulse then? Would be great if they moved over to Steam. Having Sins on there would be excellent.

I would hope so too, but doubtful for sure. Aw well, no more buying from Impulse.

even if Sins is moved onto steam I hope a sale follows soon, I foolishly bought the base retail game and didnt know one expansion was already out and the other was announced, now Rebellion is on the way.

Why's it bad? It's not like Impulse is some thing tons of people use.

If anything it'll help keep it alive so Steam doesn't bulldoze the market. Which it's doing. I don't care how great it is, it's never good when one service corners the market.... Just look at Gamestop

I would understand if it was some other company. Gamestop? They are big enough.

@Cleric Wow. I was actually pretty against the whole, "Gamestop buying Impulse thing" until I read that. When companies compete, the consumers win. I'm liking the sound of this.

Hmmmm...guess Stardock didn't want to compete with Valve for Steam anymore. This has some benefits, since digital distribution has been a sorespot for Gamestop wrt to publishers, but I kinda liked the independence of Impulse...oh well...hoping for the best.

This should put a nice ball gag in the mouths of those that have been beating the tired, "PC gaming is dead!" drum. My only concern is whether or not Gamestop will take an active or passive role when it comes to managing Impulse; the service is already extremely solid and the only two areas it is found wanting compared to Steam are 1) the size of the library and 2) the absence of a "platform" (achievements, matchmaking, etc.). Since Stardock planned on re-tooling the service to rectify those shortcomings and the library is constantly expanding, I don't see what, if anything, Gamestop brings to the table. I'm just hoping they don't mismanage the service for the benefit of its b&m stores.

Gamestop had to make this move because brick-and-mortar sales will start to decline as internet speeds and bandwidth go up and up. The good thing is this should push Steam and other online stores to keep adding features and lower prices.

So Gamestop is going to offer something like Onlive? You know, I don't really shop at Gamestop because of the used games thing, but I imagine that if Gamestop does the digital thing, it would be ten times better than Onlive, especially since they would probably release like every game ever.

Ya, I'm kind of uneasy about it as well. I've bought a lot of games on Impulse. I'm worried about what future changes to the service means for my ownership of those games...

I use steam, but I actually prefered the Impulse system over steam due to it's simplicity and not having to worry about the steam client running all the time.

I'm qutie surprised Wardell walked away from it, especially since he himself said it was generating a lot of revenue for Stardock.

I think Gamestop has done a good job with Kongregate. I'd actually like to see them transfer over some of that infrastructure to Impulse. Kongregate has supported badges and achievements for a long time. An account that aggregated both Kongregate and larger PC retail achievements would be really cool. Tie that to a Gamestop ID, and offer real rewards - discounts, free games, kreds - across both platforms and I think you have a winning online strategy.

Not sure that they'll do it, but there's a lot of potential here and if GS plays their cards right they could win a lot of people over, even those who hate their retail business.

Weird, Spawn Labs is headquartered in the office park where I work. (Which, coincidentally, is just a hop skip and a jump from both Bioware Austin and Retro Studios.)

I'd love to have GalCiv2 in my Steam library.

We all knew they couldn't last as a "brick and mortar" chain they just aren't profitable enough so yes, this makes sense. I think in ten years it will be an internet company with maybe a few stores in major metro areas only. Just like C.D. stores........ADIOS!

Let's face it! This is good for all of us! Download made the music industry suck. Gamestop does gaming good. Gamestop is protecting the industry and proving that their trade system works for everyone. They are the ones with great midnight events! Is it Wal~Mart? NO! Is it Best Bu?y NO they have no clue and never will. It's Gamestop! This is great that Steam won't have the whole market. Also Steam sucks... Thier who set up sucks... Sure the nerd ragers will rage about anything they think they can. They rage about Steam too. They can I hate Gamestop. Go buy your games at Walmart then! They want to sit in the basements and avoid women anyway. The same dudes that think Xb360 and the PS3 are for kids. Go Gamestop!

@Granz121

...you're either a brilliant troll or a total idiot. If it's the former, kudos! You are truly making trolling into a satirical art. If the latter...please volunteer your hands so that they may be broken with a hammer (or have them removed with a rusty saw, I'm not overly picky) with the hope that you will not be able to touch a keyboard and post something so shockingly ignorant in the future.

"Gamestop does gaming good. Gamestop is protecting the industry and proving that their trade system works for everyone." Erm...no...Gamestop's trading system only works for Gamestop, has been a proven siphon on the industry's revenues (unlike the murky "maybe they'll buy it, maybe they'll just steal it" with piracy, a used sale is $40-$70 a developer is guaranteed to never see) and ONLY if you have a console or handheld game in hand; when newer "used" titles are within $5 of their unopened counterparts and the trade-in-value is less than half of the purchase new, I'd hardly consider that "good for everyone" and their non-existent PC section (WoW...WoW...StarCraft II...Rift...WoW *the end*) doesn't exactly scream "does gaming good". Again...if you're trolling, kudos. If not, I do give free lobotomies; it won't make you smarter, but it will most definitely silence you.

Good, please release Demigod 2.

I think this is good news for Impulse and users of Steam, more competitive competition drives them to bring in as many customers as possible, so we'll see awesome sales here and there!

Yes, I remember. Well, I remember when Penny Arcade posted it, anyway. Not sure if I saw it here. But regardless, it looks like Gamestop is on top of that, which is not surprising. They'll have to do a lot more, though.

Steam, like XBL, is a viral product. It creates lock-in, not only for individual users, but their gaming groups as well. The lack of interoperability between Steam and Impulse, and larger installed-based of Steam, gives it a near-permanent advantage. Also, the bigger Steam gets, the harder it will be for anything else to compete, until Steam essentially has a monopoly. Apple works similarly.

Of course, there's room for competitors (e.g. consoles), but the competition really needs to step up. They can't just put a product out there and add an extra helping of Hope.
