Capcom has posted an apology and notice of cancelation on the official Japanese website for Mega Man Universe, an odd DIY Mega Man game that was scheduled to launch on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network later this year. The retro-styled platformer was a cheeky amalgam of remade Mega Man 2 levels, customizable characters (including the crooked caricature from the North American Mega Man 1 box art) and user-created levels.
According to Capcom's notice, the decision to extinguish Mega Man Universe was given impetus by "various circumstances." Those may involve the departure of Mega Man creator and Universe conceptual lead Keiji Inafune, who left Capcom in October 2010. We've requested further comment from Capcom.

Tried the game out at NYCC but simply wasn't feeling it. And I'm a hardcore Mega Man/Rockman fan. Then again, it's always sad to hear another game bites the dust.

All 3DSs must be destroyed in pits of fire if Mega Man Legends 3 isn't made. Unfair, I know, but I don't make the rules D:

Do the Japanese celebrate this day? I doubt anyone in Japan is currently super focused on Mega Man at the moment.

I wasn't looking forward to it much anyway. I have Megaman 2. I don't really need a bastardized version of it.
I want a new Mega Man X. The stuff they've been doing in their fighting games and even Viewtiful Joe before it really look like it would translate into a new X game really well.
I'll keep waiting.

Sad to see it go, hope they continue to keep everyone's sprite based hero alive though. So much rock/proto/forte left untapped.

Why in the hell would you cancel a game that so many people were clearly excited for? Does Capcom not want money? Or are they too busy developing another crappy Resident Evil spin-off game?

@SecondTomorrow
There were only about 30 people that were actually excited for this game...
It honestly looked horribly bland, which was kind of a letdown because the initial teaser trailer had me expecting more...
Here's hoping they start work on something actually worth investing interest in...

Smart move. This certainly wasn't the most compelling of projects for such an illustrious company.

Well I loved the concept, but after Keiji leaving and and it going quiet for four months until Synn said it wasn't cancelled but undergoing massive changes, I had the feeling it was going to be cancelled. I wanted to see what those changes were too. :(

I hope Legends 3 makes it.... :/

I had a feeling that Mega Man would die when Keiji Inafune left Capcom.

And this is the sad part. Since Capcom owns Mega Man, Keiji can't take him to go. I really hope he goes with Platinum...imagine the Mega Man they could make. Alas...

@Red Runner It would be great if Inafune could have taken Mega Man with him.
Truth be told I don't think a Mega Man game would be the same without his influence, and considering Capcom as of late, they'd probably make you pay to get each boss weapon as optional DLC.

Can't say I'm all too disappointed.
If only because I don't have a PS3 or 360. XD But it's more because MML3 is the upcoming game I'm really looking forward to.
