As both Europe and North America count down the (still unknown) days until the launch of Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play smart phone, PSOne games compatible with the "PlayStation Phone" have started popping up on the Android Market. Five games, in fact, including Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, Jumping Flash, MediEvil 2 and Syphon Filter. That's right -- the Play is ready to, er, play like it's circa 1995-97.
All of the games are selling for £3.99 ($6) -- the same going price as on PSN. MediEvil 2 and Syphon Filter are available in five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) while the rest are English-only releases. They're also all (predictably) platform-locked to the Xperia Play (Sony Ericsson R800i). All this one day after Google removed the PSOne emulator, PSX4Droid, attributing the action to a Content Policy violation.

I thought the plan was to have the PlayStation content delivered through the PlayStation Store, avoiding the ubiquitous Android Market?

Seriously?
The tech specs. are laughable when there are already Android smartphones on the market that have twice the RAM and a dual-core processor. This thing is underpowered for a new Android device let alone a game machine.

The lack of connection between the Xperia and the PSN/PSP, and the fact the games are equal price is really a deal breaker.

Seriously. I finally get to upgrade to a smartphone on Sunday and I was seriously considering getting the Play over the iPhone. If they would let you download all the minis/PS1 games from PS+ on the Play, it would've been a no-brainer. But unfortunately (and predictably) Sony and Sony Ericsson just couldn't play nice. Let's face it...the target audience on this is gamers and stuff like this turns us off. They're not targeting the casual audience. Hardcore gamers stay up to date and, because of this crap, this will not do as well as they hope it will.

Agreed. I was considering the Xperia Play until they announced I'd have to re-buy PS1 games I'd already bought on PSN in order to play them on the Xperia Play.

Sony is all over the place with these devices and stores. I have no idea how they figure they will maintain all of these skews and stores without confusing consumers.

Sony is really making not want xperia play with non PSN content transfer and now this.

@Senor Whopper. What? ..... I do not understand you. Sony should one day try to do things in such a counter productive manner... why can they not make a phone that at least plays ps2 games or PSP games? What a missed opportunity. Seems like big leagues are trying to avoid or control price war with the app store.

By 'Policy Violation' they mean "we stand to make a crapton more money"
Why would people rebuy games they already own when they can just go legally emulate them for less.....

This only interests me if I can hook up a DualShock 3 to the phone.
Posted: Mar 31st 2011 10:20PM kevinski said
@johnperkins21 - I'd expect there to be a good chance of that. If you can find a display unit, then you may want to take a DualShock 3 in with you to try pairing it to the phone. I mean, the phone's got to support Bluetooth, and that's what the DualShock 3 uses. Most Android phones can pair with a Wii Remote. I assume that the same is true of DualShock 3.

After reading Engadget's review, this phone is a disappointment. I wanted to upgrade to this, but i'd rather have a more powerful android phone that wasn't built cheaply and with several features at the minimal expectancy.

So they don't expect to make any money off these games I take it. First mistakes are already being made.

I don't understand, how exactly does the PSX4Droid run afoul of the "Content Policy" thing?
Posted: Apr 1st 2011 11:01AM kevin949 said
So just get psx4droid from applanet.net's market app.
