Good lord that looks horrible! It doesn't look retro, just really horrid.

@VeeDeeVee Whilst I'm a fan and supporter of indie developers, I have to agree that the graphics look a bit ropey. Don't know what the controls would be like but I can think of better examples (Jeff Minter) where they have taken a retro feel and really delivered on it. Having said that, I hope this guy does well. He's put a lot of effort into this and for that I hope his future endeavours do well.

@VeeDeeVee I actually picked this game up not long after launch and its damn good fun. While I can't speak to your personal taste in graphics, I had no problem with them. The explosions look great and I would whole heartedly argue this game is full of retro character. Also, if you didn't see the 8-bit level , it looks great.

Side note : Really glad to hear more 8 bit levels are coming too because that is my favourite level.

Version 2.0 is in the works. So far, there will be four new regular levels with one to two of them being 8-Bit levels. Also, there will be an 8-Bit endless mode that is sure to be a fun challenge!

Being a fellow indie developer, I've been accompanying the news about David and Interstellar Force for a few weeks and playing the game since the release day and I absolutely love it. The game is a labor of love and it shows! I'd recommend it to anyone interested in retro games.

This game looks beyond generic - like something featured in a "how to program for the iphone" book.

And is the iphone really the optimal platform to play a twitch shooter?

Please interview one of hundreds of talented indie developers out there.

@(Unverified) Don't be a Douche. Somebody put a lot of hard work into this game. Have you played the game? No, you haven't, so why judge it? There's no reason to but to bring them down. So until you play it or make your own game, please shut your mouth and go sit in the corner.

@Gritzor

No I haven't played the game yet, but it looks like a very basic entry in a very very well-developed genre (the 2d scrolling shooter).

So if the game isn't going to break new ground, and its presentation is crap, then why is it being featured?

Why not interview one of the hundreds of indie devs that actually is trying to push the envelope?

You're completely right. Infact I find this adoration for it quite strange. Like, do you remember back in school when a disabled student enters an art competition, all the artists enter and produce really good results. Then the teacher says "here is Billy's entry" and the class go "aawwwww!" "well done billy!"

That's how it feels here.

Patting the special kid on the back for making something that isn't very good.

This is only my opinion,:

PRESENTATION: 86%
Nice and clear options screen and high score.
GRAPHICS: 89%
Great enemies and very retro style backgrounds. Fantastic 8-bit level.
Sound: 90%
A very good soundtrack and effects, inspired to dear old C64 arcades.
HOOKABILITY: 93%
It's a little bit hard to take confidence with the game, but after a few seconds....
LASTABILITY: 89%
You'll surely want to try to complete it!
OVERALL: 91%
It's hard to produce good shoot'em up, and this one's not an exception...
A very good game for all retro arcade lover.

I've played several of the scrolling shooters released in the Minis program, and I must say, this would not be able to compete against them (at least, based on what is shown in the trailer). Granted, none of the Minis I'm talking about (Flying Hamster, Ace Armstrong, Mozox--which I didn't like) were one-man shows, but they were still very small teams. It's not graphics I'm talking about, either; this footage doesn't show particularly interesting gameplay, and neither does the video review I found on YouTube. Where do Flying Hamster and Ace Armstrong excel? Level design. They're not simply swarms of enemies appearing onscreen for you to shoot. Ace Armstrong has particularly good boss battles in its final stages, too.

Comparing this to the cited inspirations, as well, it doesn't hold its own very well. Defender is graphically the most similar, but its mini-map and bidirectional scrolling, forcing you to plan and seek out enemies instead of having them just present themselves for you to shoot, give it more focused gameplay (in addition to the crazy 6-button controls, of course). Scramble is closer to this in its simplicity, but again, it has level design going for it. R-Type . . . is waaaay more tactical, than most shooters, really.

What I've written above, of course, is only based on the footage I've seen. If someone can show me other footage to counter my argument about the gameplay, please do (I can't play this game myself, since I have no iDevice). All the same, it's still quite an impressive production for a "one-man + musician" show.

Wow, I had no idea my game was going to stir up so much controversy!

To the positive posters - thanks for trying my game and for your positive comments! :)

To the negative posters - well, I'm certainly not going to please everyone. What I do have to say is please take the time to actually "try" the game and let me know what you think I should change/add to make it better. I'm currently working on the version2.0 update that will add a lot of new stuff. I am definitely open to constructive criticism!

@David994A
I'd certainly like to try your game and see for myself whether my footage-based impressions are valid, but as I noted above, I don't have the requisite hardware to do so. I would be quite interested in providing constructive feedback; I've done the best I can so far with the video clips.

Anyway, my level design complaint aside, I want to reiterate that I think your execution of the game is quite good.

@killdash9 thanks for your reply. Well, I have a lot planned for version 2.0 which will be a free upgrade for all people who already purchased the current version. I might make a new video so keep a lookout for that.

To whom it may concern,

I was with David from the beginning of his launch and have over time grew to respect David as a hard working and dedicated indie developer. Not in it to sham or scam off some crap generic port of anything seen currently on the App store. But, made a unique and original title.
David is a down to earth and passionate about evolving and making games he likes and hopes you will too. Isn't that the main point of someone making a game. It's not to just make a buck. Well, at least not for David.

Please show some respect to individuals that are contributing our gaming habits, instead of being so utterly rude and unappreciative.

I was able to do a small write up on my site. I hope to continue supporting up and coming Indie games makers and hope that the mainstream shows a little respect when talking about game developers.

Keep It Retro..!

Wow, a lot of bad-mouthing going on here.

Sure, the game is a bit on the simple side, but personally I think it's pretty good and well-presented for a first-time game by a newcomer to games programming. Some people make games development look easy, but it's not - a lot of work and effort goes into making a game that's well-presented...and bug-free - which you'll only /really/ know if you've developed games, so I'll give the developer good points for not only completing a game, but also for the fact that it actually has variety, powerups, etc, too.

Yes, it may not be as flashy and ooze as much quality as many of the other games available...even some of the free ones, but on the other hand it's a lot better than A LOT of the OTHER games out there - even more expensive ones...if only I had a $1 for every time I'd seen a game and thought "oh, for shucks sake...what the foook are they thinking" because of a game so simple or just plain bad they should be ashamed, I could've bought Microsoft by now. This is a good effort and I'm sure he'll do even better next time.

What I guess it comes down to is "do you like these sort of games?". I do - I love retro and you only have to take a look at my own games to see that (http://tardis.dk - if you're interrested). ;-) ...but that makes me slightly biased of course.

Just be careful and put things in the right perspective - don't send a Britney Spears fan to review a Bob Dylan concert, or watch The Hangover and then compare it to Lawrence of Arabia, or compare Pac Man with Doom 3...it's different foods for different thoughts and moods.

Keep up the good work.

(and V1.2 should be out any day now)

As a fellow indie developer (in my spare time!) I couldn't agree more with some of the above. I am also a huge fan of 2D space shoot em ups. This game definitely appears to have had a large amount of work put into it, especially for just one person. I know just how much work is involved when you're a one man team. So kudos for that. The developer definitely seems to be listening to feedback and improving his game, adding more levels that people like and better controls, so I say job well done!
