Smedley: Free Realms on track to 100 million players
25
What's up, World of Warcraft? You think you're so big and bad with your 12-million-strong-and-then-some player base? You won't be quite so intimidating if Sony Online Entertainment head John Smedley's vision for Free Realms comes to fruition. In a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Smedley said, "I think it could take five or six years - that should give you some idea [of the time frame we're looking at]. But I don't see any reason why it can't go to 100 million [players], because there are so many kids out there."
The game's current player base stands at 17 million, which should increase naturally with the game's recent launch on PS3. However, though we appreciate Smedley's "children are our future" outlook, we think it's gonna take a little something extra to net the other 83 million he's hoping for.
That's right. It needs more unicorns.

I turned the demo off after 20 minutes (factoring out the ridiculous installation and load times), and it was all worth it every time I see its '0%' entry permanently residing in my trophy list.
I'd just assume use Home ...

@Hong Dong "Except no one was [...] harassing female avatars."
That's funny, because in the time I spent playing I had about five random friend requests and a handful of messages from a bunch of random sleazebags with PSN IDs referencing cannabis culture, faux-satanism, and their elite skills at shootin' gamez who get off to polygons and think they're sly calling you 'gorgeous' (or other single-syllable synonyms) without having ever actually seen you.
Such is the bane of online 'video games.'

@Epoque I must have missed that part then.
I think my brain was still trying to digest what the hell I had done and why I had decided to sully my PS3 with this crap. So I could have had wannabe stoners, pests and the other assorted plankton that you mention harrass me but was just in too much of a haze to comprehend it.

@R Planteer It's decently fun and one of the only MMO options on consoles?

I wonder how many of those registered users logged on once and never logged on again? Heck, I have an account and I've never even downloaded the client.

I had no idea what it was about, so I downloaded it from PSN. After trying 3 times to create a character and encountering an error which caused the entire game to reset, forcing me to reload (waiting time) and enter in/customize my character all over again before I could try again... Whew! I'm out of breath and forgot what I was talking about.
Oh yeah. I never got a character created because it failed so many times.
I didn't realize the intended audience was primarily for kids. I thought it was just cutesy. But now that I know they don't want me I won't have to worry about going through that process again.

I started the free demo and went to do some mission where you go fight monsters. I started attacking things, but then a tutorial screen came up and got me killed. So I respawn, and then another tutorial screen comes up and gets me killed.
Either allow me to move while I'm being attacked, or make me invincible. Jeez.

I doubt it'll ever have more appeal among kids than something such as Runescape.

Hell, I'm still trying to get past some download screen, at this point... May never be worth it, since I run wirelessly, and this along with Home doesn't seem to like that. (Still getting cutoff on Home after a couple of minutes of being on, with random error messages. Oh, and I also STILL can't get back on Uncharted2's MP, for a wager the same reason... Wireless.)

Pssht, i assume those who don't this game were once slain by either me or a member of my wily band of blood thirsty Unicorns.
