We know -- you were going to vote for the Smithsonian's Art of Video Games exhibit, but then your cat got lost, you had extra homework to do and your collection of various Mario figurines needed organizing. But just in case you hadn't made plans to get your vote in by Thursday, you're in luck: the voting deadline has been extended to April 17, through the third Sunday of this month.
The vote is trying to narrow down the list to just 80 games set to be featured in an exhibition at the famed museum right around this time next year, so you'll be helping to make history with your choices. Joining in to vote also sets you up to get advance notification about the winning games, as well as behind-the-scenes information about the exhibit as it's shown off at the Smithsonian and then toured around the country. So go, vote now -- Chrono Trigger isn't going to pick itself!

If I recall correctly, Ocarina of Time is in competition with Majora's mask, which means Ocarina of Time is going to beat Majora's Mask. That'll be really disappointing.

I'm not terribly happy with the way they're handling this: as a barely curated popularity contest, which has absolutely nothing to do with art.

I actually think they did the right thing. It's hard to pick games from an purely artistic point of view (do we go with gameplay, storyline, visual art, music?). Curators have problems even choosing paintings, which is a well stablished and studied field full of experts. Games are even harder to, although they did a good job in the selection (all games there are actually great games, from a player perspective)
In fact, I've seen the same thing (popular vote) being done to exhibits of Monet, Escher and Portinari, so it's not an unusual thing. It's also good publicity and a way to get people involved.

@Dashx747 All very good points. This is certainly an easy, practical way to do it.
Still, I can't help but wish that it was handled differently. Even if it meant identifying subject matter experts and having them vote or help curate.
Then again, accessibility has to be a priority in this milestone exhibit. Popularity contest certainly helps with that.

@Vesuvium Ok, so I realize people are always going to say "Oh, why do they choose this game and not this?" I'm all for showing off the different eras in gaming, but the way the choices are formatted is ridiculous. Each system has three games in four genres, and you can only choose one per genre.
So what ends up happening is you have the same amount of games up for nominations for the Commodore 64 as the NES. And instead of being able to vote for Chrono Trigger, A Link to the Past, and Earthbound, you can only choose one of the three because they're all Adventure games on the SNES. Yet there are three games to choose from among Combat/Strategy games for the ColecoVision.
And regardless, if they wanted to do a showcase on the "art of video games" they shouldn't be separating games into clear cut genres, but rather showcasing the games that don't fit clearly within a typical category. And even if a game DOES fit into a clear cut category, if it's not one of the four provided, it won't get nominated. I guess that's why I didn't see any sport games except for Tony Hawk's Underground 2(and really, that's the Tony Hawk game they're going to go with instead of one of the originals?).

I must say, I'm amazed by the list of games, ít's full of great games. I did not expected the Smithsonian to remember of games such as Ranger X or Nobunag's ambition, some of my Genesis favorites (and Shining Force 2, my all time personal favorite)
Great selection, looking foward to the expo.

That's not as bad as the fact that Star Fox is nominated 3 times and Command and Conquer is nominated 4 times. They're kind of limiting themselves with the genres they picked. Do we really need to pick a shooter for every system, especially when that category doesn't even include FPS's? I guess that genre is basically the arcade action genre which is cool, but I feel that they could've picked some better choices for that. Where's Tetris for god's sake?

I really wish there was a clear explanation of how this voting worked. You click on something and it says "WARNING: You may only vote once per era!" but it looks like you can voice once per genre, per platform, per era. :\

I agree, it's not quite clear. I kept voting until it said I had no more games to vote on.

Because barring MGS1 stepping up the bar for 3D visuals, the games never did anything exceptional for the medium in terms of art direction. This exhibit is taking things a bit literal and not considering pieces on the whole, but by things like art direction, which is why it sort of makes sense some games that you'd expect to be there aren't. (Like Ico being MIA)

Godddammit. Chrono Trigger had to be up against Earthbound? I love both games, but in terms of better visual aesthetics, Earthbound wins in my eyes. CT was a new level of visual standards, even if it was super anime influenced in art direction, but Earthbound just had so much quirk to it and general charm that I gotta go with it.

I like that they're doing this, but some of the choices were just bizarre.
For example, Tony Hawk Underground 2 instead of Tony Hawk 2 (different era I realize, but still), and Metroid Prime 2 instead of Metroid Prime. I actually enjoy Prime 2, but are you kidding me?! MP2 instead of MP1?

That and the eras and genres don't make sense. There was a 1994 game in the 1995-2002 era, and the genres were essentially Action, Adventure, Arcade, and Strategy. Just weird.
But I guess I can't complain, cause hey, video games exhibit at the Smithsonian.

What's the game in the "transition" part of the pic above? Looks like a little plane is flyin around a house. Something I always wanted to do as a kid.

I find a lot of the choices bizarre.
PC games didn't exist until 1995 (luckily some of the most important games crept into other platforms). Portal and Half Life 2 cannot both be in the exhibition. The hugely influential original Prince of Persia is nowhere to be seen. And Zak McCracken is more important than Maniac Mansion?
Of course you'll never please everyone, but they way they've arbitrarily restricted the choices to begin with doesn't give me much faith that the 'art' of videogames is going to mean anything other than graphics.
