Minecraft beta update 1.5 to include weather effects
48
Since everyone knows that Minecraft's raked in a cool $33 million to date, Notch has taken it upon himself to, in true rock star fashion, make it rain. In a series of Tweets this morning, Notch revealed that Minecraft beta update 1.5 will add precipitation to the game, which could possibly have gameplay implications like watering crops, putting out fires, filling small holes and moistening wolves. By the way, "Moistening Wolves" is totally the name of our new, indie noise-rock band.
Notch included an image of the weather effects at the border of two in-game biomes, showing off some sort of fantasy world where distinct rain and snow systems are allowed to hang out and be buddies. We called up our local meteorologist to see if this was a phenomenon that could occur in real life, and he literally exploded.

@PlagueDoctor357 - 1.4 just came out, so I'm guessing 1.5 is still a ways off.

Thanks for the reply. Two of my friends and I literally JUST started playing when 1.4 came out.
I noticed all the glitches people complained about we weren't getting so we instantly fell in love with the game. I thought I read something about Friday updates to the game or something. Guess I was wrong.

Will this update also stop the game from going to black screen every 15 minutes?

Disable the soft shadows, worked for me.

Had this issue all the time before using win7 64-bit. Uninstalilng 32-bit Java and installing the Java 64-bit made it go away... can't explain it, but it did.
Seems you can only get Java 64-bit in windows by using Internet Explorer 64-bit when you go to download java, so keep that in mind.

I'd buy the snow and rain 'hanging out' thing. One time when I was driving from Oregon to California in the middle of a decent snowstorm and literally at the border it went from heavy snow to heavy rain. So its not 'unpossible', just highly unlikely,
Also cool beans on the weather.

I was going to say that.
Notch has broken a lot (leaves, weather) and is finally putting it back in.
I guess it's good it is, but I'd prefer new stuff. And not new mobs. Like seriously how long do I have to wait for a white alternative to obsidian, like marble.

We had snow, but it was implemented in the most horrible way possible. Basically a world could be snow, or normal. And it would never ever stop snowing. I would just reload if I got a snow world, it was freaking annoying.
I much prefer this style of weather.

Yeah, really couldn't call it "broken", more like removed since it was pretty silly back then to have an entire world in snow, or no snow at all.

That might be the best snow effect I've ever seen in a game.

Nooooo! Don't put out fires! I use infinitely burning logs as lights in some places... My world will crumble!
Posted: Apr 7th 2011 12:09PM Scuffles said
@Mappyfun Actually if it put out nether blocks (which I would love to see some corruption of the land around them when you place them in the regular world) and torches ..... then it would be a huge selling point for lanterns. Which would be protected from the weather by their mysterious lanterny powers.

@bm111 Hmm. Yeah, I guess I've not tried making a forever burning log lately using a new map. My first castle of awesome is hard to part with, but it was something I started and put many many hours of work into since last July, and it still has my burning logs...

@bm111 Doh! your right! I did not realize that had happend (have not walked to that area in a while) It will take a few hours, but I will have to replace everthing (that burned up) with netherrack to get same effect.. but will rain put those flames out too? I wonder...

@Revving Injuns Officially? Cause there's already an airplane mod, and it's pretty good (and horribly complicated). Yogscast highlighted it last week.

Awesome. This may create some changes in my underground tree farm, but that's ok with me. Filling up naturally formed holes would be great.

Please make the weather effects work in SMP. That's all I play at this day and age. I've been to a nether world or whatever they call it because it doesn't work in multiplayer >:|
