PopCap subsidiary 4th & Battery is so edgy its first game, Unpleasant Horse, has been rejected by Apple. On its official Twitter account, the company stated that the game was rejected for "mature content." Shortly thereafter, 4th & Battery said it was appealing the decision, and promptly deleted its initial Tweet announcing the rejection.
A studio rep tried to smooth things over by tweeting: "Anyhoo, we still love Apple. Honest. We even had (and liked!) a Newton back in the day. Hope we get an appropriate rating for the game!"
The game was intended to be available for free on iOS devices later this month. We've contacted PopCap for a statement on whether plans have changed, and will update when we hear back.
Update: A PopCap representative tells Joystiq that it is "not issuing any statement at this time." We've been told that 4th & Battery may make an official statement soon.

So Apple can force 5 year old kids to build iphones hours upon hours in China, but won't allow for the killing of horses in an app?
Yep, makes perfect sense.

@shcoome .........I dont like Apples closed - proprietary philosophy on its devices as imho it stifles creativity and utility. However, claiming that they "force 5 yr olds to build iphones' is not only untrue but is also juvenile and a clear misdirection on your part. EVERY big name electronics producer outsources production to asia. XBOX, PS3, Wii, and all the iterations before them were built by asian hands. IMHO Steve Jobs is an arrogant self important jerk, but he has never said anything as stupid as what you just left as a comment.

Apple did discover that their iPhones were being built by underage workers, but they were only 15-year olds (16 is the required minimum). It was hardly child labor. Hell, I worked at the State Fair when I was 15. Now that was a mess....

If you look at the statistics, there are way more android devices than IOS devices out in the wild. So, I highly doubt it would have any issue with being picked up by android users. So go back to your little iphone and get excited when apple announces sometime in the future that they have "created" widgets.

@Tmdean Naturally, they can't take 30% of $0.....
To develop you have to pay $100 per year or something like that. If you decide to distribute it for money, that's when Apple gets 30%

The Android marketplace sure doesn't have an issue with mature content. Whether that's good or bad entirely depends on your particular tastes.

They don't really. All content is rated by the ESRB and Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony agree with them. They only refuse license content rated AO. And really, that's only because most retailers refuse to sell AO content since it's been mainly for Porn games.
So, yes, unlike Apple, you don't have some mad man randomly choosing what's good and not. What's "wholesome" and what's not. What's "adult" what's not. Apple will often break their own guidelines to suit their own needs.

@sammo21 How is rejecting a single game for "mature content" being a dictator? We get it; you and a lot of people on this website don't like Apple. If that's the case I don't know why this bothers you so much.

And I will further clarify that while yes, it can be difficult to become an approved developer for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, the point is that once you are approved, they don't constantly undermine your content.

I don't see why "mature content" is a reason to reject a game. iTunes already maintains parental controls for those that care so why aren't Apple using them? If I simply download a dictionary app, the store pop-ups an age confirmation, completely ignoring the parental controls already set in iTunes. Even though they have this parental control system in place they still reject content that isn't suitable for "All ages". Why even bother having parental controls or age confirmations? At the very least it's a poor user experience.
I've been using Macs and iPods/iPhones for years and like Apple, but this is just absurd. When it comes to the app store Apple really needs to grow up and fix these problems.

The real problem here, is Apple treats all of it's audience as if they are all little children. If a 50-year old man spends his hard earned money and purchases and iPhone or iPad, then why can't he have the content on his device that he wants on his device? If the laws of the land say that certain content is appropriate for certain age groups, then who is Apple to come along and say that it is not?
Remember, you are not renting the phones and tablets from Apple; you pay good money for them, and the content on them should be left up to you, the end user.
Imagine if you will, you went out and purchased a brand new laptop or desktop PC, only to be told once you got it home and booted it up, that certain websites, and other various content was off limits to any and all using this brand of computer. I
Imagine if you spent a couple grand purchasing a new, big screen HDTV, only to get it home and find that certain television channels are permanently restricted because the manufacturer does not want to "sully" their "good name" and corporate image by allowing you the user, to access said content?
Or if you purchased a brand, new car, only to find out a month later, that it won't allow you to drive to certain parts of town, because of activities that go on in those neighborhoods?
If either of the above scenarios happened, everyone would be outraged, and up in arms with the manufacturers. And this is EXACTLY what Apple has been doing since bringing out iOS. They are trying to whitewash a very adult world, for the adults - as if we do not know how to take care of ourselves or make our own decisions. All so their corporate image can look good. What a sham. So long as people in China's working conditions are so bad, that they rather commit suicide than continue on working, no consumer electronics company's corporate image is going to look good. Buying from Apple is like walking into a McDonald's, and having Ronald McDonald himself tell you that you are not allowed to eat artery clogging french fries, and the cholesterol inducing cheeseburgers, and the cavity creating milkshakes. And they only options you are allowed to eat, are the salads.
Can you imagine how dead and lifeless modern day computing and the internet would be if Apple had been this stuck up and self righteous back in the early 1980s? It would be just like Apple's 1984 Super Bowl commercial . . . now how is that for irony.

Everyone's so quick to hate on apple whenever an app gets rejected, but judging by the picture for the article Popcap probably didn't set the rating to the one for apps that contain mature content and got rejected because of that.
This looks like Popcap's mistake, not Apple's.

Actually both Sony and Nintendo restrict content beyond what the ESRB requires. Try publishing a visual novel on the PS3 in the US if you think they'll let you do anything. The difference is that these rejections happen before the game even gets off the ground whereas with Apple's model the game has been fully funded and developed by the time Apple review and potentially reject them. No surprise really that Apple's rejections get more publicity because no developer likes to spend time and money working on something they can't sell.

@mguniverse That's a large leap to make there. An app that we are talking about and a pornography app?
Example. There are plenty of "hot bikini pics" and Victoria's Secret apps, etc, on the app store...BUT Apple allowed and then took down an app for a lingerie store that didn't even include pictures of models in the lingerie citing it was the content. Apple does this all the time.
This has nothing to do with being "anti-Apple" no more than all of the people sticking up for Apple are Apple butt boys. This has to do with Apple's handling of the app store and their rules which they do not even follow.
