It's something id does better than almost anyone else. Most of the weapons are standard affair (pistol, machine gun, shotgun, etc.), but they just look and sound real, like they actually pack a punch. That's something Fallout doesn't come close to.

I can't wait.

Who created the FPS then? I've never been able to find one before Wolfenstein 3D. Never been able to find one that actually used polygons and had mouseaim before Quake.

Please, enlighten me.

All it takes is a quick google to find out that the FPS originally appeared in the 1970s, and even consoles had FPS titles back in the 80s. id Software comes up with some really great technology, but doing something better than someone who did it before you doesn't mean you invented it.

@Trogdorwhore To be honest, I found em both to be incredibly dull. Borderlands was cool at first but the A.I. was pretty boring and the game got really repetitive. As for fallout I didn't particularly enjoy V.A.T.S. and the environments were really dull.

@gordunk, I agree that Borderlands got repetitive fast. I got bored and couldn't bear to play it after a while, but then again I never played its multiplayer :(

Fallout was awesome though, even with it's share of problems.

I'm in the same boat. FPS is my favorite genre, so when Fallout 3 advertised itself as an RPG FPS, I got excited. When I played it and found out it was really an RPG with broken shooting mechanics, I was disappointed. I didn't enjoy the game at all.

Borderlands I never got around to playing, because in every video I've seen the AI looked really boring.

I think thats why I preferred Fallout to most FPS, because it wasn't linear and there was a real purpose to what I was doing and collecting, rather than...shoot target #7....shoot target #8... constantly.

Looks way to mainstream to me. I had hoped for something with a soul. The stiff console gameplay doesn't help either. This makes it look like the next boring shooter in line. I hate to say this cause i really like carmack and id in general.

@(Unverified) I agree with you, and many others there that echo the same.

It looked completely boring to me, up until the clown starts talking, then I get a bit excited for it to be something like Fallout, then they show more bland shooting.

The weapons don't even do it anymore. I don't know if we are getting desensitized, or maybe there needs to be more than just ... this.

The lack of thought into the the game title is also telling.

@ck0 The game is a shooter what do you want for new gameplay tied right hand to left leg then have to shoot?Or chopstick weapons? Not really a whole lot of "new" stuff that can be done that hasnt been done so might as well take the time to do what you do "right".

The only purpose of this trailer was to showcase the guns, so yeah, there's going to be alot of shooting. That doesn't mean that's all there's going to be. From everything else I've seen, it's going to play out like a Fallout game, just not as in depth (less pointless talking, less buying/selling junk, etc). Plus, there's going to be the whole vehicle based combat thing too.

People are going to hate me for saying this, but there's not a lot that makes this game stand out to me. I don't want to take anything away from the new graphics engine, and the environments look really cool, but it still looks like your typical deal with scary looking bad guys you gotta shoot.

I hope I'm proven totally wrong and this game offers something totally new to the experience other than the graphics.

@naterecording I think you're right on the money. The graphics certainly look nice but I didn't see anything new in that clip, gameplay wise. Just the same old post apocalyptic wasteland shooter. Bulletstorm wasn't exactly a work of art, but at least their skill shot system was something new.

Anyway, maybe once the game is out we'll see something that they've been hiding but I'm not holding out hope. id is known more for their graphics engines, not their innovative gameplay.

God, Bulletstorm bored me to death, it was fun for me for like 5 mins, then it got tedious. I hope Rage differs from that, I'm losing faith in FPSs, if it isn't more generic military shooters, its more generic (post apocalyptic) mutant killing shooters, then theres the odd shooter in between like Halo, which wouldn't be generic if it wasn't for the fact that we get a new Halo every 2/3 years.

I think this has just made me want Timesplitters to release all the more, I want humour and wackiness :(

So getting a new game from a series ever 3 years makes it generic?

By your standards every genre in existance is generic then.

The guns look ridiculously accurate, powerful, and easy to fire. I suppose I expected a different tone to gunfights, where one is fearful for one's safety rather than the brash confidence on display here. Granted, it is an id game after all, so I think the only reason I expected that was the open-world concept coupled with the post-apocalyptic setting.

Is there an RPG skill tree or leveling up of any kind? If there is, perhaps this is what it's like to be up there in the weapon skill set. If not, then I'm not really sure how I feel about this. Looks solid regardless.

I doubt it. People always want to compare this to fallout but they are alike in setting alone. It's a shooter first, driving game second, and maybe kind of rpg third. I think this game will be as unappealing to RPG fans as Fallout 3 was to FPS fans.

check out 00:20 and compare the pistol to the supposed same gun at 1:40. Either it's a different gun that looks nearly the same, or the pistol was upgraded with some kind of magizene feed clip. Maybe weapons are upgradable (think Bioshock). Also, look at 0:55, it looks like the player changes ammo type for his crossbow. Maybe there's different ammo for all the weapons. Of course, that's alot of maybe's.

I have a bad feeling that what we saw there was just that pistols "alternate" firing where if shoots the entire clip. I hope you are right in that guns can be customized because as others have mentioned, this looks like another generic shooter for the most part. I won't judge it too harshly yet as this is just a trailer but we will see just how innivative the game really is over the next few months.

I love Bethesda with all my heart and I love this generation of gaming, but I'm tired of post-apocalyptic RPG shooters! I'm tired of people saying "its dangerous out there in the wasteland" I understand everyone's trying to get a piece of the pie but can studios not look and plainly see that the genre has already been OVERDONE. Goddamn Borderlands was great but even they say 'wasteland' and just like every other game there's really skinny mutated guys with goggles on and occasional mohawks who carry small repeaters, SMGs, and tomahawks which we ALSO in Bulletstorm which I still enjoyed, but wheres the creativity? It's not like its been done with a different spin on it--- its been done EXACTLY the same before. Let's get some fresh ideas on the board people. I'm not stupid, I'm going to notice when you use the SAME set of characters in 8 different games. Jesus.

I'm a huge fan of Carmack and ID but honestly I think they've grown out of touch. They practically invented the FPS genre, but I don't think they're evolving with it. Rage looks good graphically and mechanically. The guns all look like they have a good feel to them. But it doesn't seem like there's any soul in this game. Aside from graphics there's nothing to push the genre forward. Now that the FPS genre is oversaturated constantly, it takes a lot for me to pick one to play, and without something more than good looking wastelands it's hard for me to put my money behind this title.
