I'm glad this change was made. There are some really talented video game music producers out there. Hopefully now that talent can be recognized.

Uematsu-san with the Lifetime Achievement award. Needs to happen. Dude is the John Williams of the game world.

Yeah! Wait, that's not how you spell Sakimoto... =p

Uematsu is a good composer, but I honestly believe that Sakimoto has done far better work over the years. And while we're at it, Yasunori Mitsuda also needs some awards for his work on Chrono Cross and the first two Shadow Hearts games, such fantastic music.

If you want the John Williams of the game world, it's Koji Kondo. The Mario and Zelda themes? I'd say that's equivalent to Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Well, with this change, I guess Tommy Tallarico will return to making BGMs... or at least make a run for a lifetime achievement award eventually.

...correction; he *has* been working on BGM as of recent. My mistake. The last one I recalled was MDK.

It's about damn time! So many games are scored better than movies these days. It's not like it's any less work for them to make their music, it's just that video games were never considered to be on the same level as any other "serious" form of media. This is a good step in the right direction.

@Uncle Jesse Yep. Now if only we could get an award show that doesn't have half-naked ladies on it, we'll be in business

It's about goddamn time indeed!

Can we get some honorary awards for some great soundtracks from
games long past? Like I don't know...
Marty O'Donnell (Halo)
Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy)
Koji Kondo (Zelda amongst others)
Harry Gregson Williams (MGS)
c'mon help me out, I'm terrible at memorizing some good names...

@Magical Robot
Just so you know, Sakaguchi is the producer, not the composer. The standard FF composer is Nobuo Uematsu, and the composers for most of their other titles are Hitoshi Sakimoto(Vagrant Story, Xenogears) and Yasunori Mitsuda(FFT, Chrono Cross).

A few other people have done roles as the composers, but Uematsu is the one most people think of, as most of the offshoots aren't as good. Well, except for the small handful of songs in FFXI by Yoko Kanno. She did the only good music in that game.

That just summed up pretty much every widely recognized award ceremony around. Though I will admit the Oscars and Grammys have been getting more and more absurdly obvious and ridiculous with their awards. Honest, Arcade Fire winning album of the year, and David Fincher NOT winning best director? Hi, I should reintroduce my friend, credibility, to you guys.

I'm glad that videogame music is finally getting some recognition outside of the industry. The Assassin's Creed 2 soundtrack is one of the best albums I own.

i want anybody who's upset about this to sit through SotC or Okami and see if they don't agree that some recognition is in line. They probably think Pac Man bleeps and blips still fill games these days. Maybe it shouldn't be on the tv award ceremony but a category viewable on the website would still be good enough.

Outlaw torn... While I definitely agree that this is a big step to fix a massive oversight by the Grammy committee (that of overlooking games in the past) as a musician some of the categories dropped in the process saddened me, of course also as a musician I know first hand that the Grammy's as a whole are a sham and are more about patting the powers that be on the back and one more marketing tool in a bleeding industry these days than they are about celebrating the glory of music...

Happy for games getting some recognition FINALLY...
BUT the day folk band jethro tull won best metal album over Metallica's ...And Justice For All was the first day I realized just how legitimate the Grammy's were... they are a fake award made by fake execs to kiss each other's asses and try to sell more records in a bleeding industry (that was the 1st metal Grammy ever btw, how the eff do you mess that up!? Jethro tull plays a frakking fake flute aka recorder!? What the frak is metal about that!?)

"(Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)."

Why "Video Game Music" when none of the other categories say "Music?" It doesn't say "Television Music" for instance. It's an obnoxious inconsistency and I hate those.

About damn time. Now we can finally get more REAL music back out in the open, and none of that auto-tuned crap. Especially Justin Bieber. Why did he even get nominated? I don't know I there are many video games that have music worse than HIS singing.

Never mind Grammy's, the should be giving Oscar's since all the games I've played are far better the movies I've seen lately. You would have Bobby Kotick (http://www.crunchbase.com/person/robert-kotick)
as best producer for pulling in Mel Gibson like movie sales. Tiger Woods can get best actor for PGA.
