The first episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy has gotten over here ("here" being "YouTube"). In this first 12-minute installment of the web series, you'll see the secret origins of Kano's robot face parts, Sonya Blade's highly impractical, highly CG cell phone replacement, and oh hey! There's that one guy from Dollhouse. Also, way more shooting than you'd expect from a series based on a fighting game.
And though nothing, nothing can prepare you for this show, we've preceded the episode with a new trailer for the series. You can find both after the break.
@ilduce620 Except his character was terrible in BSG (probably the most annoying character on an otherwise great show), and actually bearable/good in Dollhouse.
@Vcize Quite honestly, I've never thought his acting was all that good anyway. Regardless, if I were him, I'd make sure that "BSG" had a more prominent spot on my resume than "Dollhouse" just because of all the accolades "BSG" garnered (and rightly so).
To be fair, I thought "Dollhouse" improved quite a bit in the second season. They just shouldn't have dragged out the mythology in the first season.
Helo was the characters name on BSG.. And you're kidding me he was a great character.
7 of 9 (Sonja)is looking a lil worse for wear. I miss her tight 1 piece from Voyager. She was the only reason to watch that series.
Michael Jai White (Jax) was decent but the fight scenes weren't that smooth.
All in all a good video tho.. I'm sure the pace will quicken in due time. More action more favorite characters. I'm assuming these were the least loved characters anyways.. at least they were my least fav.
Oh, and Kevin Tancharoen (director and co-writer of this) is the brother of Dollhouse writer Maurissa, who is now married to Jed Whedon, Joss' brother. Also, Jeri Ryan was on many things, including Leverage, which had been directed by Jonathan Frakes a few times. he also directed "Belonging", one of the best episodes of Dollhouse, which was written by Maurissa and Jed. Oh, and he was Riker and the voice of Goliath on Gargoyles.
Pretty good work. I liked the short they did last year, but was a bit worried on how a "full" version would turn out. I enjoyed the casting as well, nice to see a web series have a budget for once.
That's not true at all. Sub-Zero is also a true ninja from the Lin Kuei clan. It's Reptile, Rain, Smoke, Ermac etc. that are the standard palette swaps with backstories to give the characters an identity.
@Apsac D He is Japanese, before the Netherealm spit him back out as a HellSpawn, he was originally Hanzo Hasashi, a Japanese ninja. Sub Zero might be Chinese since both brothers names are Chinese decent, Bi Han and Kuai Liang.
According to the official MK1 comics canon, Scorpion looked nothing like Sub-Zero before he was killed. He purposely came back as a clone of Sub-Zero but changed his color from blue to "cowardly yellow" to mock him.
So there's more to the palette swap than laziness. He's actually supposed to be a copy of Sub-Zero.
[Reptile was green because he was a combination of the two ninjas (blue and yellow make green), and he used to just have both character's moves (the spear and the freeze) before they gave him his own acid/reptilian moveset in MK2.]
@Noksukow Also, in the original game, his ending showed him out of the yellow ninja suit (he looked like Daniel Pesina, actor who also portrayed Johnny Cage). So, not terribly Asian. Latino maybe? :)
It's nice to see MK is getting the marketing-push it deserves this time around instead of taking a backseat to Street Fighter, Tekken and Soul Cailbur. I'm really excited about this new installment.
Wow this looks really bad, looks like a fan made project. Surprised they got real TV stars in it. I hate how they are trying to make everything like the dark knight, that works for batman but not eveything. This is pure cheese, just look at the Ninja costumes lol. Better than the second movie though but not as good as then first movie. btw Kano's eye is on the wrong side.
@(Unverified) - ...what? "Kano's eye is on the wrong side". He hasn't gotten his eye yet! They show the prototype, he fights Jaxx, explosion, cue Sonya breaking free and end episode. Where are you seeing this?
"Fan made project" is pretty much what it is. Kevin did it just to do it, internet caught on, and the WB is allowing him to do this because they like his direction.
By the way, the whole "Dark Knight Effect" is exactly what he was going for. Jeri Ryan owed Kevin a favor (which led to Jai White, Ian Dale, Lateef Crowder, Matt Mullins...pretty much everyone else to join in), did the pilot last year for him, and came back for the web series. The MK movies needed something, and this is perfect. If you haven't seen the pilot from last year, you need to go watch it, as it shows Scorpion, Reptile and Baraka.
Actually they do show kano's eye. Its in the trailer for the series 1:24 in. Regardless they did place the metal place on the correct side of his face.
@(Unverified) Of course you get down voted for "being negative", but I agree with you.
They obviously had a decent budget but the normal cliches exist. Bad guys all wear sunglasses indoors, so we know they are bad guys and they are bad ass because they wear sunglasses indoors.
The obligatory part where the hero is chained up and the intro of the villain being started with the hero hissing his name and then the villain explaining what he's about to do.
The same crap, and it is crap, over and over. Really bad, over the top writing. It's not the 1980s anymore.
Regardless, yes, Kano's eye is on the right side. Something that bugs me is Reptile at 0:55, if it is Reptile (looks completely different from the Reptile in Legacy).
It also looks like Matt Mullins/Johnny Cage in the red shirt near the beginning.
• The helmet at the beginning looks like it could belong to one of the cyborg brothers (Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke, or hell, even all three), or possibly even Kabal • Kano's laser eye looks promising; just gotta wait until next week to see it. • That explosion not only looks to give a reason for Kano's eye, but possibly even Jaxx's bionic arms.
Short but good though I would do away with trying to make it realistic. Sonya looks like she in her 40's though I wouldn't mind a younger actress. The costumes for Subzero and Scorpion look like something someone would make from scratch, the movie costumes looked so much better. Though the costumes for Sector, Cyrax look good like in the second film.
I liked the pilot a lot more than the first episode. I'll be patient and hope it gets better. To be completely honest though, if it didn't have the name 'Mortal Kombat' attached to it, I doubt many people would even give it the time of day. An interesting take on the franchise, but I always preferred the fantasy elements of the series over the real-world stuff.
Holy crap Michael Jai White is awful, even for an action movie star. Really wish they'd stop getting him to play Jax for stuff. Some how he was great as Black Dynamite though. *shrugs* And could they've found a worse looking woman to play Sonya Blade?
Still, this isn't bad for a free direct to internet play thing. The action isn't bad and can't wait to see some of the more interesting characters I love from this series seen in the trailer. Looking forward to the next one.
