i saw my brother playing the demo. and it felt like an unpolished Shadow Complex. it looked somewhat fun but the animations and timings seemed rather meh.

@KiDPANDA

exactly this.

I played the demo for this game and was like wtf ... this is just like Shadow Complex but way crappier. Jump controls are all over the place. Attacks are slow. Graphics not great. That irritating buzz sound pisses me off when picking up items. This is an all-around disappointment since playing the NES game, which was extremely challenging. This version is just annoying.

Sometimes its best just to let the old games be. This one I think is the perfect case in point.

A bit harsh score-wise. It's definitely not a title for all, but for those that can overlook the game's flaws it can be quite fun.

That's what I was thinking. I actually enjoyed the title. No it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But for $10, it's hardly anything I would call a 1-star product . . . more like 3-stars.

@Teancum I should qualify that and say it has a LOT of flaws. But a casual gamer can overlook them.

I think the review is a bit harsh. Compare the game to other $10 XBLA games and score it again, no way is it the worst thing on there and far from being 1 star.

It sounds to me like the reviewer is not in the target audience for this game.

Yeah I've seen a lot of really bad reviews. Along with a lot of people that say they like the game, like me. It was entertaining, worth playing, but nothing that impressive.

@fohf why should a review have to compare it to anything? Each review should take the game on its own merits not the merits of any other game.

stop making excuses for poor development it is embarrassing and there are people over.

@Jack Kevorkian Exactly. Although one wonders why they thought a lazy cash in would work on a sequel of a game that is 26 years old.

Except if you read the review he compares it directly to several games instead of judging it based on it's own merits.

Also, it is important to put things in perspective, this isn't a $60 title, it's 10 bucks. Personally, every game I buy is based on the "is it worth X amount of dollars" scale.

Instead of a stupid 5 or 10 point rating system it would be more useful to us as consumers to say what is the value of a game? How much money should someone spend and not feel ripped off?

So is this game worth 10 bucks? IMO, yes. The value is there especially when compared to past purchases of games in the $10 category which is a category with a low risk of investment.

If a game is nearly unplayable due to the controls and character animation, then no, one star is not too low regardless of price.

Shadow Complex was only $15, now at $10. Compare this crapfest to that and one star is generous.

@Perfidious Sinn I played an 8bit conversion of the original back in the 80's which was just criminal. And they called it Green Beret in the UK.

And it did run exactly at that speed.

I played the trial, thought it was good enough to spend 800 spare MSP I had laying around but was interrupted right after purchase, losing focus and interest. I suppose i should've been interrupted BEFORE wasting my MSP as I don't see myself picking it up again for another try.

That said, I don't think the game was puke-inducing as this review and commenters imply, but there are a lot of better offerings, both new and old, for 800 MSP. I wish I had spent my points in one of them instead.

If anybody wants a second opinion...

I've only played the demo, so I can see some of these complaints being the result of repetition, not enough diversity. But the demo was surprisingly fun. There's nothing wrong with the jumping or the platforming or the combat, unless you simply want more.

It seems the reviewer was expecting another Shadow Complex. Just because it's 2.5D and has a minimap doesn't mean it's going to have the same features. If anyone here has played the original game, you should know that it was such a linear game that you barely had to jump. It was mostly "knife right three times, knife left once, repeat." Not that a game in this day and age could get away with gameplay that simple. My point here is that the expectations for this game should have been a bit simpler. The game was destined to be a simple action game. "It's not a Metroidvania" isn't really a valid complaint.

Not that everyonr isn't entitled to their own opinion. And like I said, I can totally see the game getting repetetive. But I thought the core action and platforming deserve more than a 1/5 star score.

Wow, this is quite a harsh review. I guess it all boils down to expectations. I was expecting Rush N Attack 2 to be *more* like the original. This game not being like Shadow Complex doesn't bother me because I wasn't expecting a Shadow Complex. Ex-Patriot plays pretty well and delivers some solid arcade action. It's certainly worthy of more than a single star. I'd give it 3/5.

What made me not buy Ex-Patriot was the steathy combat stuff. The original RnA was all about quick timing (and stabbing) and that's what I wanted in a sequel too. I don't need maps or quests or puzzles, just point me in the direction of the goal and let me stab my way there as quickly as possible. I was hoping for a more direct-remake style (a la Bionic Commando) than a completely re-thought game.

I expected Ex-Patriot to be an arcade game and for the most part it is. Arcade games are repetitive and linear, so by all rights, this game does a pretty good job. Given the history of RnA, I'm not sure why someone wouldn't expect a simple, linear game.

And those of you that thought the original Rush N Attack was crap need to replay that bad boy. It is a wonderfully challenging arcade game. Just try beating the game without dying, or completing the game in under 12 minutes....and the music is awesome.

Played the demo and while it wasn't anything like the original, it was an entertaining mindless romp for a few minutes. I was impressed with the graphics and the animation for the price (although I didn't purchase it) and didn't mind the Metroid-esque level design. I didn't play the whole thing and truth be told it could have been one of those moments where I love the demo, buy the game and then instantly bored after just 10 more minutes. Worth more than 1 star in my opinion though.

here's something you don't know, but i will enlighten you, my friends, about sociocultral depth of the game
first of all, some of minions are downright swearing. some things they say are much more powerful in Russian than f-word in English. so if this game gets banned in RU-Live, that will be of no surprise, but can possibly generate good PR
second (ly), the voice which you hear in prison, in speakers, was strangely common to me. i tried to move around, to hear it better, to hear other phrases and then it hit me, that the voice in prison is actually of President Medvedev, speaking about caring for war veterans and celebrating 9th May. so... i actually don't know what to say, but good job, Konami, you made me care about the game!

"As the game progresses, Morrow unlocks several attack combos. Rarely more than three moves long, the combos are nevertheless practically impossible to pull off...."

Um, I didn't find it that difficult at all. So I don't know what the hell you're talking about.

This review itself is 1 star. What were you expecting? Contra? I mean come on. It's a $10 downloadable game. Yes it wasn't that great but to rate it 1 star? Get over yourself.

I know people all have a right to opinion but this is ridiculous. Especially when there are some people who genuinely take reviews like this seriously. The game is a 2.5 star at best. Personally I give it 3 stars, I enjoyed it as a game to pass time in between big releases.
