Exactly what I was thinking while reading through this.
At first I was disappointed (since I'm planning on buying it anyway), but then I remembered the lukewarm review for Killzone3.
So it goes... a game can be a lot of fun even if a person somewhere on the internet who plays games (for a job) doesn't necessarily agree.

@DannyL7 I'm surprised.. the Beta is actually pretty fun online, much much better than Confrontation.

Granted the graphics could be a bit better, there could be some more attention to detail, the gun sounds for example are so quiet you don't hear anything. But it's definitely a fun beta.

I play the beta because admittedly it is fun, but I don't regard the game as a Socom game. To be honest, I had more stealth involvement in the PSP versions, especially Fireteam Bravo 1. 2 & 3 not so much.

I just miss the skill and dedication that was required in SOCOM 2 :( It was all about slow and steady does the trick, not just a Call of Duty shooting fest, a notion I'm getting rather bored of now. It's a shame Socom isn't like what it used to be, but as a seperate game in itself, Socom 4 isn't too bad, it IS quite fun, just not as fun as it used to be.

Meh, those who hadn't got into the Socom 2 infection will enjoy this game nethertheless as an alternative to COD.

@Ellimem I agree , I have been buying them since Socom 2 in the hopes that it will be as good with nothing but dissapointment. SC2 was the best and nothing compares to the maps. I even bought the HDD and got the extra maps and After Hours should have been remade on PS3. Actully they should make SC5 with all the maps from 1-4 and make the gameplay SC2...The perfect game... Maybe I would play it for more than a hour

Buying this game tells Zipper that this is the kind of SOCOM game you want, as apposed to a return to its roots, a real SOCOM 2-esque tactical shooter. S4 was a day one buy for me until I played the beta. Third person Call of Duty couldn't describe the new multiplayer any better.

If that's your bag, awesome! I hope you enjoy the game. However, fans of the original games and of tactical shooters in general are unfortunately left to hang their heads and wonder what will become of this once great franchise.

Playing the beta, I got the same feel as the reviewer. It feels hollow like confrontation and nothing like SOCOM. The first one bullet one kill tactical shooter I played back in the day was Rainbow Six and I was hoping SOCOM 4 would get back to that but I am greatly disappointed.

After playing in the beta for a while I got this feeling quickly. I went with Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat (plus Arcana Hearts 3 is released on Psn Tuesday) instead of adding SOCOM in there. I might rent this for the single player but the multiplayer beta put a really bad taste in my mouth...

Sad...after the last "SOCOM" game, I really hoped this would be the one that brought it back but apparently no. Maybe its time to let another developer give SOCOM a try?

If you don't think there are any good games for the Move, why did you get one? Oh wait, it's because you probably DIDN'T get a Move. If you got one, you'd already be able to download demos for all the good games, and you'd be playing games through Sports Champions that trump anything that ever came with a WiiMote controller (ie Wii Play, etc). You'd be having a black in Killzone 3, realizing what the controller can REALLY do and how precise it is in Tumble, and smiling ear to ear playing a few rounds of Gladiator in Sports Champions etc etc etc.

But again, this requires owning a Move, and for that matter a PS3. Since you most likely have neither, then just ignore this post.

Don't know why the downvoted you. I'm still waiting too. I got Move at launch and the only games that i've played that were decent were Sports Champions (which no one is going to play after 2 weeks) and it did make Heavy Rain better, but i'm not a big fan of that "game" in general.

Hated move with: KZ3, MAG, Socom Beta and pretty much all the launch games sucked (based on their demos).

Might have to give Echonochrome II another chance, that wasn't terrible.

Tumble on PSN. The first game having you reach into your environment with one to one motion. I love it. I bought a move controller just for it.

But yeah, this is another botched shooter by the looks of it.

Same here. I really want to buy a Move controller, but the only thing that's holding me back is that there doesn't seem to be anything yet that is made specifically for it that's basically a killer app. I've got so many peripherals laying around in boxes, cabinets, etc. and I have three home consoles I buy games for, plus a new 3DS. I don't want to spend the money if I'm not going to use it much or get a worthwhile experience,

I know I can play LBP with it, and Killzone 3 works well, but where are the games designed from the ground up for it?

Maybe Sorcery is the game I'm waiting on, but it'd be nice to see more on the horizon than that.

MAG was horrible at the time of release. Constant freezing and major amounts of lag. I would respawn and have no gun in my hand, couldn't throw grenades and not to mention getting kicked by jealous teammates. And this was with a beta!

Then the patches! Nerf this and unnerf that. A week later, things would change again. It was like Zipper couldn't make up their minds on what was acceptable.

that's what you get when you have people constantly bitching on forums. people like it one way, the company then changes it to suit the needs of a few cry-babies, and then a war breaks out with the developer caught in the middle.

If a game sucks ... It sucks. Who cares about sales? You really think Socom will have trouble selling anyway? As a gamer I couldn't care less about sales figures. I just want an honest opinion from someone I trust. I didn't even need it because of the demo ... erm "beta."

I'll get it eventually just for campaign but I'll go into it with tempered expectations.

All a review is ... Is an opinion. This is randys opinion. It's possible your and other peoples opinions will differ. Doesn't mean joystiq is trying to tank the sales.

Do PS3 games get rated lower on joystiq? Seems that way but it's not a conspiracy. They just prefer the 360 and it's games.

So your question is "why would a video game blog, who's loyalty is to it's readers, give there honest opinion to those readers so that they can make a somewhat informed decision before spending $60 on a game"?

Well the answer is, so that the readers can make a somewhat informed decision before spending $60 on the game.

Early reviews aren't the problem, sub-par games are.

You're right that early reviews aren't the problem - but embargos, the industry's insistence on preorders, and players' desperate need to get everything the minute it comes out, are the problem.

In this case, well done to whatever company it is (Sony? I can't be bothered to scroll up) for letting reviews come out in time for people to make decisions about the game. How about all game publishers agree to a code of conduct where they do the same thing (allow review a week before). No? Not willing to let games stand on their merits (or otherwise)? Thought not.

An environment in which the majority of people order games before a review has even been released isn't a great one for encouraging quality games.

I'm not saying Joystiq is biased against the PS3 in the way that sounded. I'm not saying they are being paid off. If you listen to the podcast the guys are very candid about preferring the 360 and it's because most of their friends game on it. That's why I said even though it seems that ps3 games get lower scores or harsher reviews isn't because of some grand conspiracy. It's just their own built in bias ... Which we all have whether we admit it or not. It doesn't mean this review was low just because it's on ps3. It's common sense that if you prefer one thing over another you might overlook some things that you otherwise wouldn't. Based on my personal experience with the beta I agree with this review whole heartedly.

Anyone who says they can be completely objective when reviewing or writing opinion pieces is someone I wouldn't trust. When you have a fans perspective you can speak from the heart.

That's about the complete opposite of the situation.

As the reviewer even said, many long term fans of the franchise that he met playing the beta felt the same way as him about how crappy the MP is.

I'm a long time fan too and I thought the beta was the worst thing I've ever seen in the history of the franchise, by far.
