So what does this mean exactly? The game's being made by a group of people that haven't really had much success out on their own yet? Should we be worried?

No, because they're just taking the source of the game and porting it to the 3DS. If they were rebuilding it from the ground up, yes. It's safe.

I wonder if people are aware that a lot of Japanese developers go external.

@randomarchitect Yup and if it does well maybe Nintendo will give them a chance to make a Zelda spinoff for 3ds.

Retro Studios hadn't released any games prior to Metroid Prime.

And that didn't turn out too badly.

@Punkrawk Bbob I'm pretty sure they ARE rebuilding it from the ground up. It's clearly got much better graphics than the original, with higher-resolution models and such, plus the control scheme is entirely different, there have been hints at new features (for one thing, something'd need to replace the rumble pak for certain things), etc.
Sounds like it'd take more than a simple port to me.

No, it's not a direct port, for sure. But I doubt that's what Bbob meant. Rather, OoT, whilst being rebuilt from the ground up, is still using existing material. The story is the same, the maps are the same, the artwork was already there, the mechanics, all that already exists. So they just need to give it all a face-lift. And thus, it's far less likely that they will screw up.

It's all supervised by Nintendo too. There's really no reason to worry.

@Greippi

Exactly. They're retooling it, not building it from ground up. You can put on new textures and HD it up a bit (like all the PS3 'Collections' coming out with HD skins and some tweaks), but really its just a heavily modified form of the original code.

Did you forget Super Mario RPG, or the Mario 3 on 3, both developed by Square for Nintendo?

the first super star sega and paper mario were much better imo. The quality of the writing and story was much better(nintendo actually knows how to make a joke) and the gameplay was about the same with minor improvements.

Hyoure right. Sega would have too much respect for Sonic * the 20 year beef with Mario to place sonic on a nintendo console...right?

Hmmm, that's really interesting that Nintendo outsourced this; seems like something they would have wanted to handle internally, but in truth I'm glad since more of their internal staff can work on other things

Sidenote: Mmmmmmmmmm Secret of Mana

Right there with you buddy. All of the SNES RPGs I loved have been ported to portables except for Secret of Mana. Final Fantasy, Chronotrigger, Dragon Quest, Tactics Ogre, Lufia. - Yet some reason SoM goes overlooked =(

If you like terrible controls you can get SoM on iOS.

But I don't really like terrible controls.

Reading comprehension and you are fighting right now, aren't you?

"All of the SNES RPGs I loved have been ported to portables EXCEPT for Secret of Mana."

Meaning everything I love (that list provided) has managed to get a port, yet Secret of Mana remains not ported. I forgot about iPhone, but that was intentional forgetting. Horrible idea putting that on the iPhone.

Nintendo's been outsourcing absolutely everything lately. Either they're laying off a helluva lot of people (which we would have heard about) or something big is coming

Did you see that article about how they're building a new office block so they can expand? Not exactly layoff time.

Perhaps wishful thinking, but I hope they're just holding to their 'don't announce anything until a few months before it's due out' policy and they're busy working on loads of Wii and 3DS games we don't even know about yet, all due to start coming out toward the end of the year :)

Alternatively, maybe it needs a team of 500 to really make progress on software for the vitality sensor.

That's so weird since all 3 machines I'm looking at it on are periods. All all three windows 7, two through Chrome and one through IE. That and I've been typing for the past 14 years... I know where my comma is and where the period is. Wonder what kool-aid you're all drinking.
