- GamesRadar: "The focus on shooting, special abilities and co-op interaction is decidedly atypical for the RE universe; there's no conserving ammo, no turning with your tail between your legs, just balls-out violence against a sea of shambling undead. Yes, that does mean you can move and shoot at the same time, something even the action-heavy RE5 didn't support."
- Eurogamer: "Capcom's idea was to create a dark, gritty shooter with smooth controls and a focus on multiplayer. It's not about fear any more ... The result is a fast-paced co-operative and competitive shooter ... It's impossible to overstate how different REORC feels compared to other Resident Evil games, even Resi 5. That is to say it feels like a third-person shooter, a SOCOM game. Your targeting reticule darts about the screen like a bee disturbed from its hive. Your character covers ground quickly with a simple click of the left thumb stick. Turning, the simple act of changing direction, feels responsive. From cover you can blind fire, lob grenades or pop in and out for deadly accurate shooting. And, shock horror, you can move and shoot."
- IGN: "The game revisits one of the most iconic eras of the franchise, taking place entirely during Resident Evils 2 and 3, and specifically focusing on events in Raccoon City itself. While we've seen prequels (Resident Evil Zero) before, this time around players can actually change the storylines of previous games, even killing some of the series' biggest icons like Leon Kennedy. That immediately places Raccoon City in a bit of an 'alternate timeline' territory, though the game's producer told us new details about the Resident Evil world would be revealed. "
- MTV Multiplayer blog: "I came away from Raccoon City with the impression that there was still a lot of work to be done. At present, it doesn't feel like much more than a reskinned SOCOM with zombies. If you're not a big fan of SOCOM, you're probably going to experience the same problems in RE:RC, namely the stilted controls and loose aiming mechanics."
Metapreview: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

That's right, folks, a roundup of previews. We're gonna be straight with you and outright say it -- we burn too easily! Our skin is delicate and important to us, and as such, we couldn't make it to Capcom's Miami-based press event last week to play, among other things, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. But these folks all did and they ... well, they sorta like it:

It's a good year to be an Resident Evil fan. I am glad there seems to be a high frequency of press regarding this particular title too. Can't wait for it.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze It's the first time I've seen it. We employed it here for a game that we weren't able to check out (it was at Captivate, an event we didn't attend), but we thought our readers would still really want to know about. Would you be interested in seeing it more regularly, even for games that we preview ourselves?

I like it, too. You always have your own review and a separate meta-review, so I don't see why it would matter even if you did your own preview. I'd like to see this become a regular column on the site.
Bonus: It also keeps more readers on the 'stiq instead of jumping around to the other ones. I don't like leaving the house, if ya know what I mean.

You see, I couldn't stand playing it alone. In fact, I took a risk when I bought the game, since I had played the demo alone and didn't like it very much. For all I see, RE5 was made with coop in mind, I had much more fun playing it cooperatively than, say, both Army of Two games, or even Halo 3 campaign. Not that I'm saying those are bad games, but especially when it comes to AoT/40th Day which are supposedly the "ultimate coop experience", RE5 is miles ahead in terms of enjoyment.

I didn't actually like RE5 very much, but playing through with a friend definitely upped the fun factor. I keep saying that campaign co-op is one of the best ways to add more enjoyment into just about any game. Even greatest games are made that much better when they can be played cooperatively.

I'm glad someone at Joystiq noticed the sheer absurdity of a "Corned Beef store."
On a more related note, RE:ORC is actually sounding like it could be pretty cool. While the gameplay seems to be taking a step away from the some of the series' traditional mechanics (which isn't necessarily a bad thing...), the aesthetic seems like a return to form.
I prefer my Resident Evil to come in the "dark and spooky" variety.
As opposed to the "two commandos firing rocket launchers at giant scorpions under the hot African sun" variety. It's Resident Evil, for Chrissakes. Not Blue Stinger.
I'm just sayin'...

Jesus. Every Capcom-related thread, this pops up, like the Great Gazoo...
You know what? I hope you get your wish. Maybe Capcom will cease production on all game development in order to give you more MvC3 characters.
Only they'll be the worst characters from the company's history. Like one of the bullets in 1942. Or that weird bumble-bee monster from Exed Exes. Or the Chiki Chiki Boys. Yeah, that's right.
The goddamned Chiki Chiki Boys,
And best of all, they'll all be DLC priced at $5.99 a pop.

Calling it Resident Evil is a mistake. Moving and shooting? That's not RE. How hard can it be to produce an authentic RE experience. At least fans of the genre have Dead Space.

Wait. You can't play this RE because it has moving and shooting, so you play Dead Space instead which has moving and shooting.

"and while that may upset long-time fans who abhor change"
Go eat a d***, Destructoid, and take your overused, meaningless insults with you.
Is it really a good "change" if that change only makes the game less unique by demoting it into the same stale, mindnumbing genre that encompasses the majority of pretty much all games these days, the shooter?
I hear this bullcrap more often. Yet another great franchise gets neutered and turned into a simplistic gun shooty game, and reviewer sheep mindlessly praise it for that awesome "change" and "streamlining".

I miss the Survival part of survival horror. But as much as I'll miss the tank controls, I'll still pick this up to see what it's about.

I mean. it really comes down to what aspects define the survival horror genre.
Clumsy and awkward control? Limited saves? Limited resources?
It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Sure, RE4 was the first game in the series to have more than twelve bullets in the entire game. Sure, Leon no longer moved like a malfunctioning Roomba. But wasn't it survival horror, all the same?
And I don't know about you, but if I'm trying to survive a horrifying event, specifically one in which hordes of zombies are trying to eat the shit out of me...
I'm going to both move AND shoot. Simultaneously. After all, my survival demands it.
