Black Ops, FIFA, Just Dance make UK's Top 10 entertainment products
21
Guess what, film and music industries? You guys got taken to school in the UK's Top 40 entertainment product rankings, as compiled by trade organization Entertainment Retailers Association. According to the chart, the number one entertainment property in the UK was neither a blockbuster film like Avatar, nor a chart-topping album like Take That's Progress, but rather Call of Duty: Black Ops, which sold over 3.2 million units in the territory last year. Booyah.
Two other games, FIFA 11 and Just Dance, made it into the Top 10 -- however, only nine spots on the entire Top 40 chart were occupied by games. We're not sure what that says about the country's media consumption habits, but we are sure that Red Dead Redemption got beaten out by Now That's What I Call Music 77, and that fills our heart with a dull, constant ache.

They still make That's What I Call Music CDs? Yuck. Put Red Dead up there where it rightfully belongs.

@Raptaur Yeah, I agree, the 360 sales numbers are pretty wacky.

@Lucky48 it is going off the reputation of COD4, easily one of the best FPSs ever made. You people act like CODs popularity is completely undeserved. Infinity Ward were gods only a few short years ago.
I guess its cool to be psuedo-indie-middle-of-the-pack.

I'm not clear on your point, Infinity Ward had nothing to do with making Black Ops, it was made by Trayarch.
Unless you mean Trayarch are riding on the coat tails of Infinitay Wards IW engine, which must be coming in or around 6 years old and in high need of an overhaul?

...and this is what surprises me. That people buy into this game when it’s inferior to the last, the last afore that and especially the last afore that.
It’s not hate; I just don’t applauded shoddy work. We should be holding developers accountable for not improving the games that are then selling to us for 60 bucks.
If people continue to lap this standard up (and pay over the odds for the privilege) then what motivates developers/publishers to do a better job on the next iteration of the series.

The online is a lot better. I've easily received $60 worth of entertainment from online play alone. (About 5 days = 120 hours = as much playtime as Fallout 3 for me).
Also, I don't buy into this fanboy/hater crap. I play games I personally like regardless of whether it's "cool" or not. Don't like CoD? More power to you. Just don't buy it. If we all employ this simple method any and all crap games will cease to persist in the market.

I would disagree in that you think my comments are based solely on fanboyism or hate, I’m a little too old in the tooth for immature antics and views, plus I prefer serious discussion so lets cut the name calling crap and discuss… do you honestly feel that the online game in CoD has improved through release since MW4, do you think/feel it’s getting better?
Me, I’m getting that deja-vu feeling with it all, if I’m honest I’m getting a little bored something new need to be added and an overhaul of the engine for the next one.
As it stands with minimal updates to the engine and gameplay it’s all starting to blend into each other. I’m not easily bored with one game especially if I’m enjoying the multiplayer, I’ve invested around 420 hours in one of the current FPS right now and have no plays to stop playing it

@Lucky48 you are pointing things that have been said thousands of times on a thousand different forums. Your whininess is mainstream.
Just dont buy the thing but who cares who else buys it? Its not bad like farmville or angry birds.

I'm not saying I think YOUR comments are based solely on fanboyism or hate, but I do think a lot of the comments on this site (and others) is.
I do feel that the online play has improved since MW2. I personally never encounter cheaters/hackers in Black Ops, whereas MW2 was full of them. From a networking perspective, I almost never drop games (even when the host leaves) and lag is less apparent. Also, a number of improvements have been made to overall game balance (weapons, perks). I encounter a lot more variety in BO, as opposed to games full of OMA/noob tubes in MW2.
Now, the improvements themselves are one topic of discussion. A completely different topic would be that of the improvements meriting a new $60 game. Personally, I feel that the multiplayer maps, additional guns & perks, zombie game mode, etc. is enough to justify an entirely new game as opposed to updates to MW2. What I was saying in my first post is that if someone DOESN'T feel that way they should simply not purchase the new iteration. Voting with your wallet is the best way to get your message to the publishers.

almost 25% of charted media and you used the word "only". In the 90s when records still sold I would expect the number was in the realm of 0%. Maybe 2.5% with GTA3 or something.

This top 40 is based on units sold.
Given that a new game is roughly £35 - £45 (ignoring Just Dance - which I do), a new DVD is £12 - £15 and a CD is £8 - £10, then it would be very interesting to see what difference a revenue based chart would look like.

Isn't this just retail sales? Because the amount of music sold in shops has taken a significant decline as you can get mostly everything on itunes.

I agree that the engine should be overhauled and that each year it more of the same. However, there are not first person shooters on the market that are as good as cod. They nailed online multiplayer perfectly, that is why they have a huge fanbase. Some of which only own a video game console because of cod. Just because they are selling a ton of copies with little change doesn't make their product bad. They got the formula for first person shooters right.
