I'm giddy as a schoolgirl about the Wii 2, yet at the same time I feel like this console cycle isn't over yet. I wish just one third-party dev would have put their A team and some capital into a Wii game but alas, they'd rather sell out and bitch when they can't trick anyone into buying their shitty game.

I'm calling a modular expansion and system update for the Wii to be bundled in with Zelda: Skyward Sword for release this holiday to allow our current Wii consoles to output 720p video.

They MIGHT talk about the next generation console but it won't be called, "Wii HD or 2" it will be something entirely different. Even then there will be nothing to show but theoretical stuff as it likely won't release til Fall 2012 or Spring 2013.

That's so sad that the Xbox 360 and PS3 got their asses handed to them by a last-gen system. Arbitrary definitions aside, Nintendo already won this generation. It's over. The King is dead, long live the King!

I don't know man. This gen is far from over, and calling the winner already is still a bit foolish, even if the Wii does seem like a clear choice.

(Source is a GI.biz story, but that one requires a log in).

These predictions about the PS3 or 360 beating the Wii are of course based on there not being a "Wii 2" announced.

Eh ... the math doesn't add up. In order to come close to beating the Wii the PS3 and 360 would have to continue to sell as well as they ever have without dropping off and the Wii would have to stop selling entirely. That's just not going to happen.

Well sure the Wii's going to keep selling, but there's currently a what, 34m lead? If the Wii continues into it's slump and Nintendo doesn't hit the sweet price and drive sales with that, I can see it easily getting stuck around 110m or so (this is, of course, assuming they don't instead release a new console asap).

The PS3 could probably get to around 90-100m I think, with the 360 following close behind. If Nintendo announces a new console then I definitely think the Wii's sales will show a significant drop, and if the PS3 and 360 don't show huge drops, I imagine they'd stand a good chance to at least close the gap significantly.

I think the PS3 ending up at 90-100 million units is a very generous estimate.

First of all, arguing with a sandwich is just ridiculous. Second; I've seen this argument before that the Wii has "kicked Microsoft and Sony's ass" because the console has sold more units. Of course it has! The only reason I bough one was for the virtual console. The only retail games I bought for the Wii was SSB:Brawl and the Harvey Birdman game. Granted, there are a LOT of good games for the Wii - I just didn't buy them. Just going off of what my friends have done, my case is not uncommon. Sure, the console is selling, but I wonder how the games are selling in comparison...
Check out the top tens per console:
Wii:
http://www.vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&publisher=&console=Wii&genre=&minSales=0&results=50&sort=Total
Top 10 for the console: 247.61m units, 378.98m units total

PS3:
http://www.vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&publisher=&console=PS3&genre=&minSales=0&results=50&sort=Total
Top 10 for the console: 61.71m units, 166.70m units total

360:
http://www.vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&publisher=&console=X360&genre=&minSales=0&results=50&sort=Total
Top 10 for the console 89.44m units, 213m units total

(all numbers are worldwide)

Notice how Kinect Adventures is in the top 10 for the 360, and BOTH Wii Sports games are in the top 10 for the Wii? That's because every time a console is sold with a bundled game it adds to the sales numbers of whatever the packaged game is.

subtract the bundled games from the 360 and the Wii:
Wii top 10: 137.89m units (subtracting Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play, and then adding #11, #12, and #13)
A difference of about -44.32%

360 Top 10: 85.67m units (subtracting Kinect Adventures, and adding ODST)
A difference of about -4.22%

Consoles sold:
Wii: 86.38m
PS3: 49.32
360: 52.99

Average games per console:
Wii: 4.3 games (all inclusive) per console, 3.2 excluding hardware bundles
360: 4 games (all inclusive) per console, 3.9 excluding hardware bundles

Kind of a huge difference if you leave out the hardware bundled software, right?

Though the entire thing is moot, specifically because the PS3 and 360 are targeted at an entirely different demographic than the Wii is (and I own all three).

tl;dr
Yes the Wii has the sales numbers, but the software sales are vastly over-inflated due to bundled software.

Having never paid attention to the world of Nintendo, I kind of always thought the price was $170. I can confirm, however, that at the Best Buy in Flatiron, NYC today, the Wii was going for $170.

@jph89 yeah, but no one walks around really caring what a score a game got, if you played it and like it, what does a score really matter? I believe one of those 97 was TP and to me it's the worst Zelda game ever made. Yes i said it, and I love Zelda beyond anything, Scores don't matter.

If you spent 3 seconds to look it up, you'd see the Galaxy duo are #1 and #2, respectively. And while "scores don't matter", scores represent how good a game is... especially on an aggregate site like Metacritic.

Great, the Kirby dance in text form was supposed to be in that gray (probably soon to be white) void as a means to mock the person I'm replying to for posting about how they don't play their Wii rarely, subtly hinting at some disdain for the system or how it just isn't as good as the others when the post is about a drop in price.

There's only one thing that sucks about this.

See, I bought the Wii when it came out. I have played great games on the Wii.

I feel that had I waited until now to get it, I would have plenty of great choices and an extreme amount of excitement built up to play them. And I would've saved some money, and perhaps accomplished things with that time I spent on the Wii.

Saved $80, by waiting over four years. Giving you the money to buy perhaps four good Wii games that have hit the bargain bin (granted that they're all third-party games), or one and three-fifths Nintendo games (given their tendency to never ever pricedrop).
