If you thought Rockstar's crime saga began with the illicit exploits of Niko Bellic, your thumb may have obscured some vital roman numerals when you last picked up a Grand Theft Auto box.
We'll just avoid boxes entirely and point you to Steam's ongoing Rockstar Weekend sale, which now has the Grand Theft Auto Classics pack for $7.49 (a discount of 75% off the regular price). The pack contains top-down classics Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2, along with sandbox giant Grand Theft Auto 3 and its follow-ups, Vice City and San Andreas. The deal's making a quick getaway tomorrow, so don't wait too long if you prefer your virtual violence vintage.

@Special Agent Bob GTA3 was the only cover girl who seemed real. That still one of the best video game covers of all time.

Amazing what people will pay so as not to deal with the "inconvenience" of putting a DVD in a computer.

You would honestly pay the $7 in driving to the store. Or shipping.
Plus, this copy lasts forever.

@Special Agent Steve Just wanted to point out - it only lasts as long as Valve keep their servers online.
30 years from now that may not be the case, and all your digital games will be kind of useless. This is coming from a Steam user, a long-time Valve fan - nothing against digital downloads, I buy lots of them. But to say games last forever when bought this way is not true at all.

Difference is Valve have always said they'd make their games playable offline should they ever shut down. And even if they did and every computer with any evidence of you owning a game on Steam is destroyed simultaneously... you could just grab a cracked EXE and all those Steam games are playable once again.
I have no worries about my Steam library being made infertile.

@MrXBob Let's be honest here. How many people are really going to be playing a game of this gen 30 years from now?

SA is my pick of the franchise, man I loved that game. I was just digging around for a game to throw in and came across my GC copy of Simpson's Hit n' Run. Yeah, I get it. They're not really objective comparable. But they're two games I'll hang to.
haha, from quick google search. It's myself from the year 2008,- "Yep, and I don't know why, but a handful of people came out of the woodwork to call me a douche, which I'm fine with, after I said that I'd miss being able to customize cars. So sue me, I like pimping out a crappy little hatchback with rims, hydraulics, nitros, and parking it in my garage. Safehouses were almost wholly pointless in GTAIV, outside of being able to start/save from somewhere convenient. Sniffle..."

Thats probably the worst thing about the Car Customisation not being in GTA IV after its existance in SA.
For once i would've been able to have pimped out ride and driven down the street. Without the hassle of me turning the corner only to have a fire engine randomly crash into the side of me which for some reason flipped my car onto its hood causing it to explode.
Hell, its even worse trying to drive around safely whilst looking for the cheat code for that "all Taxi's are Nitro's enabled" cheat; because you forgot to turn it off. Regardless, Good times :)

Thing is, I would want nothing more to do than just cheat my way from the very start and just go nuts. I already own all the games on PS2 (sans GTA 1 & 2) yet I find the sale tempting. perhaps GTA4 will go on sale and I may just pick that up (also have that one already...)

Hey, better than the Torchlight post. They posted about the sale 23.5 hours into a 24 hour sale, no joke.

GTA 1 and 2, legally free here. I dunno if there's a region lock, but I can download them and I'm up in Canada, so it's probable that you can too.

That's how it is.
I already bought these the second they were available on Steam. Outstanding titles each and every one.

Yes!
I'd love to see VC or SA using the GTAIV engine, but with the silly physics and fun added back in. But technically that would be "the best GTA ever" and therefore nobody would buy another one beyond that. So not good for Rockstar.

I mean I bought the pack regardless. I like having games in my Steam library so I can just download them whenever and wherever. I rebought Mass Effect 2 when it was on sale just to have it in my Steam library.
But if somebody is getting the pack ONLY for GTA1 & 2 I'm pretty sure they'd rather just download them for free.
