Remember how finding a Wii after its launch was more difficult than finding ... um, a thing, like -- you know what? There actually isn't an analogy that's applicable, here. It was the hardest thing to find, ever. That was a rough period to be sure, but Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently explained to USA Today, "We learned significant lessons from the launch of Wii and we made sure to have not only ample supply [of 3DS] in the marketplace, but we staged supply so it would not sell out." He added, "That strategy is why you didn't see massive sellouts on Nintendo 3DS."
Fils-Aime explained that, even though the system sold almost 400,000 units in its first week on store shelves, it avoided sellouts largely because Nintendo "had product going direct to store and we also had product in retailers (distribution centers), so they could easily replenish when they had stores running low on inventory." The supply chain seems to be holding up pretty well -- way better than Nintendo's supply strategy for the Wii, which involved making secret wishes on falling stars that Wiis would just, like, appear.

Getting a Wii was about as close to insider trading as I'll probably ever get.

The Wii didn't have any magical components in it, it was basically a rebranded Gamecube, so it was inexcusable that it took so many years to bring supply up.
But the 3DS has a magic 3D LCD that's the only one in the world and that probably limits supply.

It's not secret that nintendo used the "cabbage patch" strategy with the Wii; by basically short shipping every shipment of Wiis or splitting them into multiple shipments, they guaranteed that any time someone went looking for one they'd get the "we're sold out but we should be getting some more in soon" line forcing people to make multiple trips. The more people got the message that the Wii was hard to get, the more the message that it was somehow a "must have" was hammered into people's heads especially the people that got the message from Nintendo marketing that the system was meant for people who didnt play games, to play games on.
Add to that the fact that the wii was (and still is) half the price of it's competitors is what lead more to it's sales. And yeah they made a butt load of money off of it because there was hardly any R&D going from the GC to the Wii.

I wonder if the total lack of marketing was also a factor?
A hope they go big with marketing once OoT is out.

Too bad they forgot to keep adequate stocks of good software for the launch, or make good software even.

One of my favorite game stores almost lost me as a customer over the damn Wii. I had called to see if they knew when they'd get any in stock. They just had gotten one and were to put it out for sale the next day.
Arrived at opening, and... no Wii. An employee had bought it himself overnight. (I did get one though)
Apparently our copy of Wii Fit came from backroom deals my uncle made with someone at GameStop.
I'm pretty sure that they couldn't actually do WORSE with the 3DS.

When the original XBox came out, my local GameStop got TWO in. One was bought by an employee, the other was bought by another employee to put on eBay. After that, that store got a policy that employees couldn't buy new system hardware for the first 24 hours.

I don't want 3DS or NGP, I have Dead Space on my iPhone.
Also, the other day I was at best buy talking to my buddy Tim who happened to work there, and he was talking about how the 3DSs are simply not selling well.

You will see a shortage once they drop the news that the 3DS is actually the Wii2 controller.
The Wii2 will not come with a controller to 'keep costs down for consumers' but you will need to buy a 3DS to play games. Killer-wallet-app-integration (Kwai)

They did that once. When the GameCube was released in Japan, they didn't include AV cables. They said "Everyone has a Nintendo 64 anyway, they're the same cables. Use those. It makes it cheaper to buy the system." (Yes, they literally said this.)
It pissed off a significant amount of people, and they started including AV cables.

@Drakkenfyre What *I* love most about Nintendo and its philosophy on accessories is the fact that in 3 no 4 iterations of the DS (DS,DSLite,DSi,DSiXL) there have been almost as many connectors for the power cord. What in the name of god is the reasoning behind that? (Except to force 3rd party suppliers to make new ones.)
I still buy their consoles, but I can't believe their insistence on changing the bloody connector (when the battery and charger are the same voltage throughout the lifespan of the console.)

Reggie is such a great PR guy that it's almost embarrassing to listen to spokespeople from other companies. However, I'm sure that the 3DS is off to a slow start, just like the DS was, if any of you can remember that far back. But I'm sure that it will take off, especially after people see how huge the NGP is in person and once Sony reveals the price. It's always difficult to convince your giant install base to switch to a new product when their old product still works fine and is being supported. PS2 to PS3, anyone? But it will get there. Yeah, yeah, the launch lineup is pretty poor, but so is EVERY launch lineup. The 360 didn't have a killer game until Oblivion and look at the library now. Remember all of the PS3 "has no games" jokes? They were funny because at that point in time they were true. Remember how the Wii ... well ... Galaxy 1&2 are amazing!
The point is, people sounding the death knell for the 3DS are morons. Just wait until it gets a couple of exclusive Pokemon games and and a raccoon hat Mario in 3D.

I don't know, the 3DS sold almost as many units in one week as the ds did in its first month. Considering there's no "must buy" software for it yet, and a lot of people are just holding out until the summer releases, I don't understand all the negative buzz around the 3ds's launch. They sold a bunch of hardware at a ridiculously high price (imo) with (arguably) barely any worthwhile software and yet people call it a slow launch? By the time the price does drop and the system selling software is out I think the 3DS will be a big success.

@A Sandwich Games will help 3DS a lot. But do you know what isn't helping 3DS? That people think it's just another DS revision, like a DSlite or DSi, just this time with a better screen that just happens to support 3D.
Nintendo could stand to get the word out that the 3DS is a brand new platform, not just to video game-centric sites and periodicals. Because it's genuinely holding the platform back, and keeping units on store shelves.

They also really need to tone down the 3d advertising. Honestly, it's the least important part of the 3DS. The circle pad, gyroscope and the fact that it actually has competent 3d (not stereoscopic) graphics are way more important than "glasses free 3d!" because they all actually effect games.

Very true. It's as if people are accustomed to a blockbuster on each release. Nintendo's not always the sales record breaker... as we remember about the DS. (I still have my blue DS fat.) I didn't get a DSi, though I did get an XL... (and a DS Lite because they improved the screens so much between 1st and 2nd gen).
I am happy with the 3DS (and I got the "aqua" one to boot), and I've played the living snot out of a title that didn't need 3D (Lego Star Wars) but really has a great presentation for 3D, particularly in the flight sequences (that are not on rails now... which is awesome.) Will the 3DS take off? Yep. It'll have a strong year, and particularly when the AAA titles come down the pipeline. (There's a ton of them to look forward to...though truth be told, I've got so many RPGs backing up on my shelf for the DS, I should at least start some of those before investing in more 3DS titles. heh.)

EVERY launch lineup is poor?
I remember the first XBOX had this little thing called Halo. And the Wii had both Wii Sports and Twilight Princess.
And going back a bit further, the NES, SNES and 64 all had Mario launch titles which were released to major critical acclaim - especially the first one.
And Dreamcast launched with Sonic and Soul Calibur...
Only really the 360, PS3 and 3DS are the only consoles in recent times to have really crappy launch lineups. Even then the DS had a port of Super Mario 64, and Gamecube had Weegee's Mansion.

Doubt it. I agree the 3D schtick is mostly pointless and doesn't affect gameplay, but it is definitely the selling point they have for the system (at least initially). Think about how the mainstream react to these two possible stories:
1. 'It's basically the same as the last one but the graphics are better and it now has a joystick pretty much like the one in the competing system'
2. 'It's the first ever handheld game system that you can play in incredible 3d without needing glasses!'
#2 is almost approaching a news story. #1 is wtf who cares, leave that to the game nerds.
Basically regarding this story, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. It sells out? Everyone shouts intentional shortages. It doesn't? Everyone shouts failure.
Personally I'm certain the Wii shortages weren't intentional (that is, they might well have expected a degree of shortages actually at launch, but not to that extent and for that long). That was because they estimated demand wrong.
I'm also pretty sure they did make an effort to do better with supply for 3DS... but a lot less sure they didn't also estimate demand wrong, in the other direction this time. Obviously you can't believe a word Reggie (or any other PR person) says.
