I've never heard of this game either. Maybe you're talking about Spikey The Porcupine: 4? It's a pretty common bootleg game. Not quite a Sonic game, though.

Do you mean Sonic & Knuckles?

I guess you could call it Sonic 4. It's more like Sonic 3.5.

Yeah, I think he must be referring to this pirate Sonic 4 seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZ4YhoRc8_8

It was actually just a Speedy Gonzales game with Sonic sprites thrown in.

I'm not even a huge Sonic fan, but this is eerily close to what seems like a great sonic game....

This is your chance, SEGA. Don't fail me.

Far off to his right is Tails, that twin-tailed tinkerer is practically ring-buddies with Sonic.
To his left would then be Knuckles, because he doesn't want to be acknowledged as his "right hand man" like Tails, and wants to be further from the player so he can seem more badass.

And behind Sonic? Well... Amy. Sonic really needs to file a charge against her for stalking him so much. I'm surprised there is no court order for her to stay at least a hundred feet from him yet.

I will wait for a few review to come out, I just can't see sega doing an amazing job in a sonic game. I rather see a fan remake since they usual better game most of the time.

Unless the producer rode sonic at 88mph and went back in time to make sega employees make this game. Which explains why all the new sonic games suck, as the staff died from overwork on sonic & knuckles and this game at the same time.

This will be the last good sonic title.

So what happened to Sonic 4? They're just gonna drop that?

This whole thing just looks like as if Sega saw that one Sonic fangame and went "oh **** this looks way better than what we're doing" and scrapped it for this.

I'll repeat what I said before, Sega is desperate.

Mind you, my irk is at SEGA, not you, good sir. I agree with your post wholeheartedly, actually. :]
Having said that... If Sega was as desperate as people claim, they would've given us the goddamned STREETS OF RAGE remake or a new title in the series that so many have clamored for. I would've thrown my money at them all too willingly; instead of the "working my way through college girls" over at the strip bar last Saturday.

Who knows, maybe one of them will end up finishing college, end up working for Sega as an intern, realize STREETS OF RAGE kicked all kinds of ass(literally); and deny their boss any "friends with benefits privileges" just so we can all enjoy one of the best beat'em up games of all time.

Dare to dream, folks.

Sonic 4's shitty, gooey, sticky physics were an absolute deal breaker. It was like Sonic by way Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel.

This new Sonic Generations sounds like it could be good...but Sega needs to get the "classic" Sonic's physics just right. Otherwise, I'm not sure I see the point of them bending over backwards to remind me that I'm playing as "classic Sonic."

All I can say about the "modern" Sonic levels is, uh, don't be terrible. Please don't be the complete hateful atrocity they usually are. I heard Sonic Colors was pretty good, so whatever you did there, Sega, just...do it again.

Sega's come so close to creating the perfect Sonic game time and time again. Only they add something totally stupid like Werewolves or Giant cats who like to fish. Or they just take a hot steaming shit on the game's physics.

Like I said, Sega...Sonic Colors seemed to please a great and many people.

So just do that, and only that...without, you know deciding at the last minute to add a third Sonic that flies on a smarmy, one-liner spewing dragon character. In order to incorporate aerial stages. That nobody asked for.

Yeah, I think Colors is their best so far on the Spikey games, but even so, I am not a fan of the non 2D platforming gameplay they have shown so far: I don't know if it is their focus on "speed", or what, but Mario fared superbly well in his transition to 3D. Hope they can figure something out.

If they screw up with the Spikey levels, I hope skipping them somehow is possible, but two separate campaigns would be very nice.

Of course, they will still have to aim right on the Sonic stages, as their last effort was dishearteningly appalling.

From most of the previews I've seen, most people who play it think Classic Sonic is very faithful to the original Genesis games.
I also really enjoyed Colors (best Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2 in my opinion), but after Generations I think it would be nice to see a truly 3D Sonic game. I personally consider Colors (and Unleashed's daytime levels) to be 2.5D, because you never have full freedom of where to go. You turn every now and then, but for the most part you are just moving forward or swtiching to 2D. It's fun, but I'd like to see a return to the 3D platforming style of Sonic Adventure 2.
That being said, I think Generations can potentially be the best Sonic game since the Dreamcast (or even Genesis) days. As long as they DON'T. MESS. UP.

Every single time it happens. Every single time. We went through this exact same phase for Unleashed and Sonic 4. I specifically remembering saying "If Sega doesn't get it with Sonic 4, they don't get it at all. This is it." .

Not falling for it again. THE CYCLE IS UNBROKEN.

Is there some kind of law that requires stupid gimmicks in Sonic games? The only thing preventing Sonic from being great like in the old days, is the insistence of modern developers to change the formula. Why can't they learn that?
The original games where great because they were designed to be a specific type of game - a stylish, fast platformer with multiple paths. Every single failed Sonic game of the last decade has attempted to change this formula in one way or the other, if not going as far as to replace it completely.
Just make a 2.5D platformer - no first person sequences, no weird camera movement - just fast and pretty platform action. Updated to modern graphics, but gameplay should stay the same.

This looks cool and all, but I'm actually a little bit concerned. (No surprise for a Sonic game, I know.) Does this mean that whenever they make a Sonic game, it'll always end up as a re-hash, remix, redux, or refixing of old sonic games? I mean, not for nothing, they're fun and all, but this just seems like Sonic Team has taken to relying on a crutch that was not that steady to begin with.

@Pugnaciousturtle

No matter what Team Sonic does, they won't win. If it's new and progressive (like they tried a half-dozen times, starting with Adventure), then people will crap on it for abandoning what made sonic great.

But if they make something deliberately throwback to the originals, people will moan "rehash" and "cash grab." Worse, they'll hold it to the impossibly high standards of their nostalgia.

Their best bet is to just put Sonic out of his misery. The average lifespan for a hedgehog is about 4 years, and 4 years after his debut is when Sonic started to suck.

If by "new and progressive" you mean "unequivocally terrible."

Seriously, I wouldn't call confusing inter-level "Adventure" segments progressive. I certainly wouldn't call playing glorified games of "Hot Hot Cold" as Knuckles progressive, either. Clunky, awkward third-person shooting? Sonic swinging a sword? Sonic banging human women??

None of it was progressive. It was just bad.

It was just really, really bad.
