"I'm still waiting for Rage to "wow" me."

That basically sums up the vibe I have about this game. It sure looks great, and will probably be fun, but this being the first game from iD Since DooM III should probably have something more impressive going for it other than a revamped tech engine.

It looks like a solid game, but it doesn't stand out for me either.

Why was everyone worshiping this game at E3?

I'm pretty tired of post apocalyptic motifs.

Have there really been that many? I guess, if you're counting zombie games, but other than that I only know of fallout. And uh... Gears of War? Prey? Not really sure.

I'm wondering the same thing. It actually won "Best Console Game" at E3 last year.

The people at Id are technical geniuses, but it's been a long time since they made a game I really wanted to play.

I don't know... theres the Fallouts, Bulletstorm, Borderlands, Enslaved, Half Life (?), Gears of War, etc. (any others?)

Some are prettier than others, but other than original titles like Half Life it seems beaten to death.

By the time this game comes out, it will have been 4 years since the first trailer was shown. In that time, games and their sequels have come and gone, and what looked amazing back then doesn't have the same appeal anymore. It was announced well before it was ready. Though i liked the way that the more recent dead city trailer looked, but everything else has been lacking.

While it does look great, this generation is well into its last half of the cycle, so I hope it's designed to scale for the next line of consoles. I think we'll see UE4 in the next year or two.

Borderlands takes place on another planet, on which nothing has gone wrong, so I'm not sure it counts. Enslaved is a good one, and I just remembered another one: Darksiders! But overall outside of Zombies I don't personally think that "apocalypse" is overused yet.

"d has forgone most of the RPG elements found in similar-looking games like Borderlands and Bethesda's own Fallout series. Weapons, gadgets and gear will all be upgradeable to some extent but, as for a character leveling system -- forget about it."

Was hoping it be another borderlands/fallout :(

Finally hit 69 the other day when playing co-op through the Claptrap DLC and it still isn't any less fun than it always has been. Really wanting news of a sequel as well. I would normally expect it at E3 but since they've been doing the Duke thing, idk. Not sure if their studio is big enough yet to be able to have enough completed (I'm sure their working on it) to be able to show to the public. Maybe we'll at least get an announcement.

It seems like both Fallout 3 and Borderlands have killed Rage for people. I know for me it's the same, dunno why. Rage seems like a middle ground between the two, without RPG element.

It's all about how it feels to move, shoot and play, and you won't know that until it's released. Doom 3 was clunky and predictable the way it moved, IMO. Borderlands was smooth and responsive. It all depends on feel.

If you watched the recent enemy/weapon trailer you'd see that the AI hasn't changed in the slightest since Doom III. They still predictably and mindlessly sprint towards the player character and slide left and right over the ground like ice as the AI runs predetermined paths that don't match the character animation. Was a bit upset after seeing that but I've kept my mouth shut cause it seemed everyone else was liking what they saw.

Meh, after the massive disappointment that was Doom 3, I've come to embrace id as a progenitor of amazing tech, yet bad games.

Maybe Rage will be good, but I'm not holding my breath.

Rage's id tech 5 looks amazing.

In the words of Penny-Arcade, I can't wait until someone makes a game with it.

Whoa, I forgot about the merger.

It's been so long since id released a game (Doom 3) that it's weird to think of them as anything but independent.

Hmmm. Well, it seems like Bethesda has it's own proprietary engine, which they're using to power Skyrim.

In any case, I think if ZeniMax sees a financial benefit to licensing the engine out to certain developers for certain projects, they will.

If this game was created by any other developer, I would be like "Meh"

but it is id.

Can't forget how they created and evolved the FPS genre and pushed video gaming into the masses and the future. I'll have to see more; plus a 60 FPS on console means less stuff going on, so meh.

I'm more hyped for Doom 4 even though much hasn't been said about it except that the game will look 3 - 4 times better then RAGE and is in development.

I also want a Quake 5. A Quake game fully developed by id unlike 4.

"If you add game variations just to add game variations it confuses people," said one of the designers during the hands-off multiplayer presentation. "People don't know what to play."
Does that even make sense?Because it sounds like an excuse to do less to me.Last I heard people like variety and choices.I would rather have variations to pick from than have just one type picked by them.
I know exactly what I want to play and if the game doesnt have different game variations to pick from when I am in the mood for them then I just wont play it.

I was thinking the same exact thing. Bungie would like a word with them, I think. I still play Reach regularly because I can hop on at any time and play normal mp matchmaking and all its available gametypes, firefight and all its gametypes, campaign with it contributing to my overall character leveling... i mean, just a ridiculous amount of options. BUT, its because each of those options are done so well. I agree with you, that it sounds like an excuse to be lazy. If you make all the available options half-assed then yeah, people will be confused because they'll be trying to decide on the best of the worst choices.

About time a game stepped out without having crappy grindfests around levelling up the scope on your sniper gun, or increasing your armour slightly. Ugh, we've created a generation of grindy FPS games.

The lack of RPG elements disappoints me.

Those elements give games a feeling of progression and incentive to keep playing.

This game was looking like a promising title, but why would I want to play another linear FPS? I usually skip most terrible campaigns now-a-days anyway.

Well, kind of a bummer. I could care less about about the MP - but my give-a-fck-o-meter is kinda stuck on zero.

I am all for long single player, I don't know though - I was ready to finish Crysis 2 towards the end - simply because the gameplay was getting a little stale - I resorted to stealth movements through a good portion of the end - it was just more satisfying.

I'm holding out that John and his megatextures pull through and deliver a stellar title. Drop the MP and focus on the SP and gameplay.

I love the AI bashing in the article. After all, the Borderlands AI was just skittles, right? The humans with guns in the game even ran straight at you. I don't recall any of them using cover at all.

God I hate criticisms that compare games. It invariably leads to cherry picking things a game did wrong when compared to its contemporaries rather than focusing on what it did right.

Nice disclaimer about author of post. It seems this individual doesn't like monotony in a game. Aren't all games follow same formula, overcoming odds. No multi player fine with me. Wait for a review from a professional game journalist. Not someone that is an expert in all things Peruvian and has been a game journalist for a " dozen weeks ".

I dunno if it's just me, but it truly feels like this game kind missed the mark when it comes to launch. When most of the early reveals came out (around the same time that Borderlands was also on the way) this game looks awesome, but the more time goes on, the less it stands out and the more I just care less.

I pre-ordered this back after E3 like...2 years ago? and recently canceled it. Now I'm actually doubting I'm going to purchase it. Too bad really, had this game been a late 2009, early-mid 2010 release it would be an instant buy, but it's window feels like it's closed. Such a shame.
