In a recent interview with Edge, industry legend Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed two of the suspicions we'd developed regarding the handful of Super Mario 3DS details revealed during the publisher's GDC presentation. First, he explained, "It's a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64." Which makes sense, considering we knew it was being developed by the team between both installments in the Galaxy series. He added that the device's 3D capabilities makes platforming a bit smoother, explaining, "The floors floating in space: in 2D it's difficult to judge the distance, but in 3D it's really easy."
Second, remember the tail that was springing out of the logo? That wasn't just some sad remnant of a half-deleted Wingding -- it was, as you probably expected, an appendage. Miyamoto explained, "The tail you mentioned on the logo – it's what you think it is. You probably know what's going to happen using that character." Who, Tanooki? Yeah, we know that guy's style. He's gonna get right in our trash cans, mess up our yard and then fly off into the crisp, night sky.
We'll have our opportunity to get reacquainted with that ringtailed jerk relatively soon -- Miyamoto explained, Super Mario 3DS is "completely original, and coming this year."

Wait...is this going to be a 2D platformer with 3D graphics or a 3D game with 3D graphics?

How can they keep a straight face when talking about "new" Mario games? Whenever they need money to pay for the Chocolate Lesbians Fountain near their Vapourised Cocaine Grotto they just bring out Mario 64 and hope that no-one notices. I really hope one day people will just stop buying their crappy remakes and maybe Nintendo will come up with a brand new IP. It might be terrible but hey, something original is better than playing the same Mario game we have for the past 15 years.

@Halgrimur I agree, Nintendo could use another hit ip.

@Halgrimur: Mario games have changed a LOT over time, dude. It's very easy to see: just put Super Mario Bros. next to Super Mario Bros. 3, or Super Mario Bros. 3 next to Super Mario World, or Super Mario World next to Super Mario 64, or Super Mario 64 next to Super Mario Sunshine, or Super Mario Sunshine next to Super Mario Galaxy. Oh, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii with its 4-player mayhem? Very different experience from any other Super Mario game (or any other platformer, for that matter).
As for the remakes and re-releases, nobody's forcing you to buy them.

I know you're trolling, good sir, and I fully respect your intentions. And as far as I can say, you were trollsome in that effect.
Now go play Super Smash Bros and collect all the Nintendo characters figurines, and have a good day.
I said, have a good day.
PS: I must admit I was intrigued by the Chocolate Lesbian Fountain idea. Are the lesbians, in this case, made of pure chocolate?

I think You misaprehend me.
There are Mario games that I consider groundbreaking (for their time) and most have a decent enough amount of fun pumped into them to completely justify the price. My actual first encounter with Mario was on a Chinese clone of the NES that were sold in the countries of the Former Soviet Union under the name Dendy, and I was blown away by it (from what I remember anyway, we are going back a good 15-ish years). I've also thoroughly enjoyed Super Mario World on the SNES and even bought Super Mario 64 with my NDS(the very first one, that looked like a grey brick), naively thinking things could be different. And although I haven't played the original Super Smash Bros, but the Brawl variety I was introduced to by a couple of my friends who were massive fans and yeah, I had fun, mainly when the stars aligned in such a way that I could see what the hell was going on and actually knew the moves of the various obscure characters.
Mario is very much the Isaac Asimov of video games, in the sense that Mr. Asimov's works have been published in nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System and I can't really think of a video game genre that is yet to get a dedicated Mario game. Well, maybe the Interactive Erotic Novel but those only really get released in Japan.
Surely, the franchise that has given us so much in gaming (both brilliant and abominable) deserves a little dignity. Mario jumped the proverbial shark when he went into space, isn't it time, to let the charming Italian plumber have his rest? Because if there is anything that annoys me about the current Nintendo games creation policy, it is its complete creative stagnation. New ideas are scarce and usually minimal in implementation. All I'm saying is that if Valve tried to release a new Half Life with, say, a new gun or a different type of physics-based puzzle (or a slow-moving elevator, amirite?) and no hint of any other improvement we would think they have gone completely batshit bananas, so why is Nintendo allowed to get away with it?
Pah, its 6 am and I sound like a conspiracy theorist on heavy skunk, so I will shut up.

If you consider Mario to be a pinnacle of narrative ability, I would understand your disappointment with a lack of finality to the Mario "character". However, think a bit and you'll realize that Mario is merely a conduit, an easily recognizable name (akin to video games being referred to as "the nintendo" in the 90's), and his existence is dedicated solely to serve Nintendo's whims, such as overworlds, polygons, virtual 3D and now real 3D. Granted, the fact that his name is continuously tarnished via sports compilations and the DSi gems Mario Calculator and Mario Clock, that still doesn't matter much because he's not a character I care about outside of his jumping, running, flying and gravity-manipulating skills.

Super Mario 64 next to Super Mario Sunshine.
Wait. WAT! Aside from missing a few of mario's signature moves in 64, I found the similarities so striking, it bothered me. Then about an hour later, I realized this was one step forwards followed by two steps back. Sorry Sunshine, you just didn't cut it.

Your argument is no different than those complaining about the next Madden, the next Zelda, the next Halo, etc. There's never a valid point to be made. These are highly lucrative, globally recognized franchises we're dealing with here. Ratings are consistently high, they make an absolute killing in sales year after year-- companies will not kill their flagship franchise because you've grown tired of it. If these games were truly identical, we'd see what happened to Atari happen today. The market will decide when these franchises have gotten stale.
The only thing I'm hoping is it's nothing like Galaxy. I know I'm in the extreme minority, but I didn't care for those games one bit.

I hope this game is closer to SM64 than Galaxy, personally. I love both games, but my biggest problem with Galaxy is that its levels are so linear. It feels like a 2D platformer in 3D.
Like I said, I still love Galaxy, but if I had a choice I'd go for a truly 3D platformer over a 2D platformer in 3D.

I wish they'd go back to the traditional 2D style graphics/gameplay just one last time, but it'll never happen. NSMB was nowhere near as fun as SMB3 or SMW.

So true.
It is ridiculous how easy they are now. And what happened to all the good power suits? The best thing that they come up with now is the penguin?
Anyways, I'm very happy to here that this will be a 3d and NOT a 2d platformer like nsmb

Not surprising, given Nintendo's aversion to doing anything original.

@Brodo hey you think that was bad? you know how many people play that arcade drum game like crazy? it is very much like DDR. If you didn't like it, it's ok, but this game is great fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR46xrjSB6I it was odd how it was presented though i agree. him facing the audience. and the screen on the side.
however Nintendo owned E3 more than a few times the last years, since DS announcement, wii, etc. so did last year with 3DS and it is about to own it once more. Only microsoft managed to beat nintendo with E3 presentations. and that is when they presented kinect.
cheers!
