A lot of the commentary is pretty promotional (yes, Patrick, we know we're seeing lots of effects and that they're courtesy of that amazing Frostbite 2 engine), but there are some good bits in there and, if nothing else, it'll give you an excuse to watch that gameplay video again. You can see a YouTube version of the footage with commentary after the break.
Battlefield 3 gameplay video, now with developer commentary

Enough people have "liked" EA's Battlefield 3 on Facebook that a new video has been unlocked, and this time it's actually a commentary track to the 12 minutes of gameplay revealed back at GDC. Executive producer Patrick Bach shares all kinds of insights and secrets on the track, from the fact that attack plan map is actually just a placeholder to the return of a familiar series star.

I wish we had a time machine so I could skip the endless stream of extremely boring shit at work and just get to the release dates of all this great stuff already.

That was terrible. The guy might as well not have been there.
No offense to him, but he shouldn't be the one doing commentaries.

I"m an avid Joystiq reader, yet i never felt compelled to create a log-in and comment on posts until now.
I love the video an i am looking forward to get this game, but i'm sorry, if i'm the producer of any game and i wanted to comment on a video, i'd at least write a draft or two, analyze it, then put it in a video. "Another flower bites the dust?" really? Come on, guy, give us some credit here, at least put some effort into it. Tell us how difficult it was to create the engine, tell us why you chose to show this demo on pc and not console. Maybe comment on what you learned from BF BC2 and what you wanted to add here. Or Maybe, say something like, "we focused on the story this time around.
Sorry for my rant, but this really rubbed me the wrong way.

Show the multiplayer. We have enough single player fps games to last 10 lifetimes. Battlefield is a MULTIPLAYER franchise. Show the massive maps, vehicles, unlocks, badges / medals, squads, etc...

I doubt they will show any of that until E3, it would make sense to as they usually let people have a play there and show a demo. But I hope they show it before.
Im itching for some multiplayer info! I wanna know the full damage toll of how buildings really get damaged plus everything else haha

This was on DRMB a few days ago. Its the reason the video was released in the first place, not because we hit a million likes.
Though i agree with the guy above me. Was hoping for a bit more from the commentary, much more like the recent Podcast they did on the Sound within the game over on the Blog. That taught me more than this 12 min "talk you through the video as if you're visually disabled" thing done here. Not that i have anything against Bach, he's got work to be doing admittedly.

I'm sure Bach got better things to do, than analyzing gameplay videos and writing drafts for commentaries. I agree with the one saying someone else should have done the commentary. They should've had a dedicated commentaries guy, preferebly a native english speaker. Bach is fairly competent in english, but his swedish accent may make it hard to interpret what he is saying for some people. As I am from Scandinavia myself, I don't really mind.
But the gameplay video itself was ok though. It was nice to get a more fluid view of the game, and not these chopped up bits of gameplay that we've previously seen. I'm just waiting for some multiplayer-action to come as that is my main interest in this game. Singleplayer is ok, and it'll probably serve as a good way to familiarize oneself with the game and it's mechanics. But I just have such a long history with the Battlefield-series multiplayer, dating back to the Battlefield 1942 game. So fingers crossed!

Commentary and other unnecessary garbage aside, the game as shown so far is unreal. When you factor in animations and that amazing multi-axis recoil, its jaw-dropping.

@Apakal Agreed. I can't wait to pass up CoD for this come November. E3 should give us some insight into Multiplayer....

Who else didn't feel "the tension" going through the school? Maybe if it was my first video game partner, but you're going to have to do better than a dark hallway with sunbeams to make most of us feel tension. We grew up on Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

Don't get me wrong. The game looks jaw-droppingly fantastic. I love the fact that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to be around for a few years. We're only starting to see what these systems can do graphically.
Posted: Apr 23rd 2011 12:40PM Orresnei said
@Milf Biggenson Actually, I think we're getting close to the level where graphics are unlikly tom improve much on current consoles. Let's face it. 512MB ram (256 dedicated on Playstation 3) is hardly enough to display high resolution textures in a real 1920 * 1080 resolution. Console developers are getting to a point where they have to go with sub-HD or HD-ready resolution (1366 * 720 or 1280 * 720) because they're really pushing the consoles to a point where they won't get any more out of the hardware.
No level of texture compression and decompression techniques, and smart pipelining of graphics calculation can make console games look a lot better than what we are seeing today. Sure, Bad Company 2 looks alot better than the first first person shooters on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. But comon. Do you really think you'll see something much better? I doubt it.
The hardware has come a long way since the current consoles was released, and I can't wait to see how Dice has used some of the new features of DX11 and all the available hardware on PC's to make the game look amazing. I think that when Nintendo release their new console in 2012, we'll see some amazing DX11-enabled console titles as well. If they go with 2GB of ram, a decent DX11-enabled graphics card, and some multi-core processor with enough pipelines and cache, then the games will have good potential to run quite well in full HD-resoluions.

@Orresnei I think there is still room for improvement. I won't be happy until I'm playing a game that I can't tell apart from the CGI intro. Now, that's what I want to see in the next systems. I'm not a graphics whore either - started on Pong and I definitely appreciate what we call graphics today without any arguments there - but I think we all want that level of sheen. Not to mention real time damage and environmental deformation in every game that ISN'T Red Faction. :)

Singleplayer-wise, I see in this video little difference between this game and COD. Corridor shooting, scripted AI, enemy and events. Scripted car destruction. No squad command. Somewhat invincible protagonist. I don't see what's the hype. All I keep hearing is how awesome this game WILL be, but I haven't seen it from all the information currently released.
Posted: Apr 23rd 2011 8:15PM Orresnei said
@allinwonder How nice then, that the Battlefield-franchise (1942, Vietnam, 2 and 2142) was multiplayer titles, and that Battlefield 3 first and formost is a successor to the Battlefield 2 game. I will not judge the games gameplay merit on some singleplayer footage. Everyone who's had some experience with the original titles now that multiplayer is where it is at. And if the multiplayer is half as good as Battlefield 2, and can produce the same level (or close) of animations, physics and overall graphics as in the singleplayer. Well, then the game will be something completely different from the Call of Duty games, allbeit with a somewhat similar singleplayer campaign.

Holy bad grammar, Batman! That game sure looks dynamic! Just watch those dynamics! That dog sure looks dynamic.
I wish more trailers came with commentaries that just retold exactly what was happening on-screen and throwing the word "dynamic" into each sentense.
Seriöst - vad håller ni på med DICE?
