Shigeru Miyamoto has a habit for developing games that show off the strength of new Nintendo platforms -- and it sounds like he's planning on doing so once again for the 3DS. Speaking to Edge, Miyamoto explained now that Nintendo has finished developing the 3DS hardware, it can "focus more on gaming" in the coming year, adding that we can expect "remakes of games on 3DS as well." When asked for a specific title he'd like to see remade, Miyamoto reached into his own back catalog, answering, "I think A Link To The Past."
Deciding that wasn't enough of a pseudo-sadistic tease, Miyamoto explained some of the functionality he'd like to see in a 3DS Link to the Past remake. "Do you remember Xevious," Miyamoto asked. "It's two-layered and I really wanted to create that at the time. So to see Link To The Past in two layers would be quite attractive for me." Such a remake sounds just perfect for the 3D Classics section of the 3DS eShop -- a storefront which, serendipitously enough, will play host to a renovated version of Xevious itself.

A Link to the Past is one of my very favorite games of all time, but... well, I really have no interest in a remake. I think Miyamoto's time would be much better spent trying to make a new top-down Zelda that surpasses it.
With proper 2D graphics and proper movement controls, unlike the Zelda games for Nintendo DS.

@Qehb: Yeah, Nintendo hasn't made a new non-casual IP in a decade.
But if they're going to just keep making Zelda, I wish they would at least do for the series what they've been doing for the Mario series all along. Every new generation Mario takes a big leap forward in some way or another (well, except last generation... Sunshine wasn't exactly a leap forward), whereas Zelda peaked on the SNES.

I know that Gameboy's Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is coming to the virtual console for the 3DS. But is it not a better idea to remake Link's Awakening than remaking Link to the past, because in my opinion Link's Awakening is so better in story and gameplay. Of course a Link to the Past in not bad at all, still my number two Zelda game after Link's Awakening.

Nintendo has a few IPs that are less than 25 years old.
Pikmin, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Golden Sun, Advanced Wars, Fire Emblem, Smash Bros. come to mind. I'm not super familiar with the Wii's offerings, but I'm sure they put out a few new games (Red Steel or something) this generation as well?

Meh, I'd rather see a true console sequel to Wind Waker or a handheld sequel to minish cap. I could never get the motivation to finish LTTP, it always got boring before the end.
But its obvious why they would choose LTTP, people are obsessed with it and it's a much bigger technological upgrade than what they've been doing with the pokemon games.

They actually put out a ton of new games that never turn into series (and usually don't end up outside of japan). The truth is that no matter how much people complain on this blog, sequels are what people really buy and the chances of a new game turning into a popular Nintendo series are low.
Nintendo is better off just using old series if they have new gameplay ideas, otherwise barely anybody will actually try out the new gameplay.
As for the complaints about remakes, Nintendo has been steadily releasing sequels to almost all of their main series for the past 20 years. The process has not slowed down or been replaced by remakes. You can look at how often new zelda, metroid, mario, etc games come out and you will see this.

it amazes me how all these Nintendo fans, who likely read this blog fairly often, can be completely unaware of all the original games Nintendo designs and publishes.
Steel Diver? Whats that? Pandoras Tower? Never heard of it. And so on.
The real reason Nintendo sticks with the old series is because people actually care about them. If they had released their new games 20 years ago, we would be seeing the much anticipated 8th game in the Steel Diver series by now. But instead, we get a single game that will likely never sell well enough to get a polished sequel.
You can look through the lists of games Nintendo has published in the past 10 years, theres lots of new games that never went anywhere. Thats why Nintendo doesn't even bother translating a lot of those games to English, they know only a very small minority of gamers would actually buy them.

Agreed.
The odd part about fanboyism is... on the Nintendo-side, they encourage a lot of remakes or sequels for their favorite series. And on the anti-Nintendo-side, they say Nintendo does nothing but remakes and sequels. It's almost as if neither side is aware of the original IPs Nintendo makes outside of Japan.

Before anyone says ZOMG no didn;t you see how polished it is, ITS AWESOME. I never said it wasn't cool and you have to remember LocoRoco started life off as a physics demo.

Wasn't going to assume that, though I definitely know a lot that would.
I would say though that most Nintendo launch titles, even if it's an original, always seem like tech demos. I mean even Pilot Wings 64 was just showing the tip of what the N64 could do, even Wii Sports felt the same.
Just saying that people tend to forget about the other originals that appear along the way... Pikmin isn't always pointed out, Chibi-Robo is rarely mentioned, and barely anyone's really looking at the upcoming Pandora's Tower.

i'm from the NES Generation as well and Nintendo has NOT been rehashing the same games over and over again this game came out nearly 20 years ago -.- so it's GREAT that it's being reintroduced for older players to enjoy again and younger ones to enjoy in general.

I have two opinions on this article.
First: I am thrilled that A Link to the Past is getting a 3D remake. I love that game and personally think that it is the second best Zelda ever behind the original.
Second: I wish that they would get away from the remake idea, as well as the 3D (game world.. not 3D visuals), and build a new Zelda in the overhead view. However, the appearance is not the only throwback I'm looking for. Zelda began as the greatest adventure of all time and while the new ones are still awesome they are NOT what Zelda started as.
Get rid of all of the character chat and linear elements. Build a Zelda and let us truly explore again like the original. I miss the community aspect of working with friends to figure out where everything. I don't want the game to walk me through it. Use the power of the new systems to make the game a truly grand and huge adventure. Make hundreds of items... some necessary and some simply more useful to add power to your character. I envision a game that plays like the original Zelda with a remarkably more beautiful look in the line of A Link to the Past but 25 times the size of A Link to the Past. Overworld, underworld, hidden secrets in bushes, rocks, dirt, caves, etc.
It'll never happen so I should build a bridge... then get over it.
Or just keep playing The Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past.
(Too bad I cannot ever forget where everything is in the original. I would love to play it again "for the first time" but it is just going through the motions at this point.)
P.S. Die slow...

Only problem with your vision is this thing called the internet. It's impossible to make a game that's about exploration and you/your buddies talking about the cool places you've found because the ease and temptation of looking online. I've thought about this before with friends how the thrill of being lost and discoveries in a game is a thing of the past now. Specifically we were talking about MMOs/EverQuest - But it still holds true for all games. The internet has successfully made everything trivial. It sucks.

No more gimmick controls, please. I still fail to see the actual reasoning behind such inconvenient controls that are put into Wii games for an example. The main objective of controls is for them to be fluid and unnoticeable. That is how the experienced players get immersed into their games. Immersion does not happen by swinging a stick and a nunchuk around while sitting on your livingroom sofa meant for relaxation.

@Altrix
The controls themselves weren't bad, it was how the devs of games implemented them in the games.
For instance, many claimed that Atari's controls were awful - but when the right game came up, that problem was rarely mentioned. But if a game (no matter how good it was) had awful control-schemes, then the controls on the Atari joystick were easy to blame.
If the right analog stick in most controllers wasn't used for sight-orientation (like it is for most games), most would consider the controller at fault for bad design. But seeing that most developers used the controls correctly, people now just blame the game if the ergonomics is uncomfortable.
Same went for Wii controls.
No one really complained about it in Wii Sports... but you'll see everyone complaining about it with almost every other game. ...because most devs barely tried to work with it. ...most blame the controllers, some blame the devs, and others blame the lack of quality control that Nintendo has these days.
