Well, this is certainly unexpected. No Xbox Live Arcade game to date has been afforded a dedicated server option. That is, until now. TimeGate Studios has announced that its recently released, multiplayer-centric title, Section 8: Prejudice, now allows Xbox Live players to access and play on PC-hosted servers through GameServers ... for a small fee.
Dedicated servers can host ranked or unranked matches with support for up to 32 players. The monthly charges will run you $1.29 a player, plus a little extra something something if you want to purchase support for a standalone voice chat program. You can place your order for a dedicated server for the XBLA version now -- PC and PS3 players should look sharp, though, as the same support is on its way to their respective versions of the shooter.

This is bad news. Start of microtransactions on XBL. You know Kotick is gonna be all over this: "Sick of lag? Tired of getting shot around corners? well for a mere $5 per month, you get to play future CoD games on fully dedicated servers....!"

@FlashJS This is very good news, don't downplay the fact a group of gamers can pay for their own servers like PC gamers have done for many years.
Have it pre-ordered on Steam and look forward to playing it.

The difference being pc gamers have a choice. Find someone who is too expensive? Go find a cheaper host.
You won't be given that choice here. You take what they offer, or you don't get it at all.

@Drakkenfyre the other difference is that you could host your own dedicated server...I have a fat pipe at my office (my office as in I pay the bills and can put whatever the eff I want on my racks) that could handle it. Hopefully, they'll give us that option in the future.

FlashJS speaks the truth. I don't think this feature will be taken advantage of by many people due to the source game, but this does open up the gates for other, bigger companies to implement similar features. I can only hope that the general public won't go with this when given the option.

That's pretty cool.

I like how more options is suddenly worse then no options. They still offer peer to peer hosting, but if you want you can now have your own dedicated server.
Oh man Timegate is giving it's users a way to have less lag in their games. BOO BOOOOOOO

Wouldn't it be better to just allow you to download dedicated server client software for the PC, PS3, or 360? Hell, you could even give achievements and trophies for leaving it open for a long time.

@(Unverified) The first game did this. Joystiq and all the other sites claiming this is the first time seem to forget this http://www.aeropause.com/2009/08/section-8-gets-dedicated-server-support-for-360-and-pc/

What needs to happen is that we should be allowed to use a separate console as a server if we wanted too....during the first xbox my clan would use another xbox as a server while playing rainbow six 3 black arrow.
Would be awesome if we could do stuff like that with more games.

Is there some part of this game where you get discharged from gameplay by virtually jacking off too much? *Full Metal Jacket*

Wasn't Battlefield 1943 dedicated servers? Or am I thinking of Battlefield. I know I had to log into EA servers for something :)

Pretty nifty. The 360 had Xserver which was free to download, but depending on the owner's internet, lag could still be an issue. The fee is really for the "better" internet service since bandwidth ain't free. I wonder if there is an option for system link dedicated servers using a PC as the server, but that may be hopeful wishing for my 360 friends.

There's a service ( www.ReadyUpServers.com )that does CoD for Xbox 360 dedicated hosting similar to this in private games. They're small scale, but trying to get it to caught on for now.
