As Sony's forced PlayStation Network and Qriocity outages continue, stretching into what is officially Day 6, the company issued a very un-update to would-be users this morning: "Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time," said corp. comm. director Patrick Seybold on the PlayStation Blog. "As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we're working to get them back online quickly."
Speaking to PCWorld, SCEJ spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka clarified that a "thorough investigation" was ongoing into what the company has characterized as an "external intrusion" into its system, which prompted the service suspensions. More troubling than any frustration caused by downtime over this past weekend, however, is the continued uncertainty about the extent of the attack. According to Fukuoka, Sony had yet to determine if users' personal information or credit card numbers had been accessed by the apparent hackers. If that's found to be the case, he assured, Sony would promptly inform those potentially affected.
On Saturday, Seybold noted that "additional security" would be put in place before the services relaunch, calling this "re-building" effort both "time-consuming" and "necessary."

See that's the thing I don't understand. How folks say they supported Anon in the past but how see them as assholes. Anon as an entity is both good and bad, light and dark. As much evil shit as anon has done, it has also done some good. I'm not trying to support them or defend them but realistically I know what ever anon says can't be trusted, and what ever anon does can have some sort of parallel bizzaro world acting going in the opposite way as well.
I also know that Anon is much more than "script kiddies". Anon can be 1.000's to 10,000's unknown intelligent people working at once cause. Almost like a flock of crows ready to strike down and kill what ever they please.
I hold anon in a neutral level I mean they can seriously wreck some havoc as we an see and have seen. Even if you support them you know they can do something just as bad or that you wouldn't want to see them do. That's just the essence of anon, a beast with no name, no face, that you can't trust.

I know anon is the easy one to point fingers at, but this could be something else too. If security has been compromised at the user information level, and all the credit cards and whatnot have been stolen, that would just as easily explain the seriousness of this outage. There have been a number of high profile database hacks in the last year, and this may just be another one.

Uh, I want to co-op Portal as well, but right now that's become a bit of a secondary issue. I am more concerned about my credit card/personal info.
People who are railing about Geohot/Anonymous don't seem to understand how serious this is. These are not bored kids trying to keep you from playing SOCOM 4. There is more and more evidence surfacing on cracker forums that this is an organized criminal attack targeting the PSN Store payment system and the user credit card database.
I really hope that Sony is being honest when they say that they don't actually know whether credit card data was compromised, and that they will immediately let us know when they find out.
But after Sony was so tight-lipped and misleading last week about the reasons PSN was down, I have my doubts.

Dude, I haven't even gotten my Steam account synced yet! This whole Steamworks thing was something I was really excited to check out. Also, I wanted my first run through of the game to be on computer, but knowing the internet will spoil this game for me within days, I reluctantly submitted to playing it on PS3 this weekend.
(not trying to induce console warz here. I'm sure the graphical differences are quite low; but I still wanted to have the absolute best experience, even if it is only 0.1% better)

True story: my father-in-law uses his son's PS3 for Netflix and Netflix only. He even needs someone to pull up the Netflix menu if it isn't already logged in when he goes to watch because PS3 interface and UI is so foreign to him.
Netflix is all he watches ever. Yesterday he became so frustrated with the PSN not allowing him to get on Netflix that he threw the controller onto the table the HDTV was on. The controller bounced off and hit the center of the TV, breaking the picture.
The PSN hackers have cost one man his LCD TV DAMMIT! Although I found it kind of funny lol

@Banksyliveraa I'll believe this is Sony capitalizing on the intrusion to make changes they've been wanting to make and capitalize on user sympathy. Initially though, it was probably higher-ups telling the tech guys to shut it all down until they could fully investigate and try to make the system "hackproof" (if there is such a thing).
Anon would take credit for this if it were them (Bringing down a major network for a week? That's something incredibly impressive), so I believe them when they say it wasn't them.
(Also --- SUPER glad I got Portal for PC directly instead of banking on that PS3 Steam voucher.)

If you don't mind me asking... Why exactly are you thankful for that? the 360 version is about as useful as the PS3 version right now it's not like your getting steam support and as soon as PSN comes back online it's less useful so I'm confused by your comment... Thankfully the first thing I did was link my PSN account to steam so I was able to grab my steam copy before this all happened.... Also for those that are wondering playing on PS3 offline for the time being is not a complete letdown as I can confirm that when the network is back up and you sync with Steam your game progress (different then saves think what chapter you can start from) and steam achievements will automatically unlock!!! I was able to test this on Monday before the network went down as I received an early copy of portal 2

I personally believe that this is looking more and more like a professional Criminal attack with the intent of retrieving users credit card and personal information. Now leaving Anon completely out of the blame for this is just illogical. They might not be directly responsible for the attack but they sure as hell opened the door. When News of a simple protest attack (that's successful I might add) reaches those that steal peoples personal information for a living what do you think is the first thing that crosses their mind? Anon may not be behind this attack but they are indirectly responsible for it occurring. That being said if this was a criminal attack I'm all for Sony pulling down the system to restructure it. The only group that's going to win out in the end is going to be Sony as they "should" walk out of this ordeal with a stronger much more secure infrastructure.

Can you explain to me why your thankful of that? As of right now the 360 version is only slightly more useful than the PS3 version but once the network is back up it'll be less useful.... and for those of us that already linked our steam accounts the PS3 version is looking pretty good cause I can still play on steam.
For those wondering playing offline on your PS3 isn't a complete loss as soon as the network is back up and you link to steam your game progress (different than saves think what chapter you can start from) and steam achievements will all automatically transfer over. I was able to test this on Monday of last week before the network went down as I received an early copy of the game

@You all:
As sparkster rightly said (and I'm not sure why he got downvoted for it), this attack was NOT the work of Anonymous (well not directly at least)
There are two other points -- and I'm not sure why Joystiq didn't make them clear -- to take into account:
1. PSN went down because SCE decided to take that action after the security breach; it is still down because they are RE-BUILDING their system, which obviously takes time. http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/04/24/latest-update-for-psnqriocity-services/
2. I'm pretty sure (though haven't got any solid evidence to back this up) that a company like SCE has to, BY LAW, inform its customers if their credit card information has been compromised. The fact they haven't said this seems to imply that customer information WAS NOT compromised.

Likewise my friend. Would love to play some online coop but I've been playing the local coop.
What I find interesting is the timing for all this. Way too coincidental.
A huge coup for Sony/Valve and PSN/Steam and then this happens?
Why not two weeks ago or 2 weeks from now? Methinks it was planned and organized.

@Banksyliveraa George Hotz doesn't even own a PS3 anymore, and considering he just settled with Sony recently, the idea that he's involved is only slightly more likely than "The Tooth Fairy hacked PSN".
Further, if by "his spaz crew" you mean "Anonymous", they aren't "his" army, and the AnonOps command structure that generally organizes these events has denied involvement, and isn't known for being sheepish about involvement. While "Anon splinter group" is possible, it could just as easily be anyone else with the means that is causing an issue.

@NinjaTaco The logic doesn't follow. They never denied involvement in the attack that they conducted earlier, and being quiet about an attack would only mean that they could rally less people to the cause. After all, Anonymous isn't a cohesive group with a member list and complex communications network. Their only command structure for such things, which by the way is public and viewable by anyone(and HAS to be in order to be effective) has been silent for about a week shy of a month now regarding Sony. While it's possible that the attack was orchestrated by a person or group that considers themselves affiliated with "Anonymous", it wasn't an "Anonymous Attack" as most people know them.

@Rather Dashing The idea that Hotz holds no ill will to Sony because he just settled is ridiculous.
And the 4Chan numbnuts aren't sheepish about their involvement on other causes, but when people got mad at them for taking down PSN, they backtracked. Who is to say they wouldn't deny involvement simply so they can attack Sony and simultaneously avoid the heat for it? They didn't regret trying to hurt Sony, only being blamed for hurting customers.
