mation. In fact, for much of the promotion, the Potato Sack was #2 on Valve's sales chart, directly under Portal 2 pre-order

I thought this was a pretty cool move by Valve. Rather than just putting something together to increase the promotional Portal 2 blitz, they helped out a bunch of small devs as well.

Pretty neat thing to do I think.

Even if "the financials weren't as massive as they could have been" - it's bringing huge levels of awareness to the games by association with one of the year's most high profile games. And that will definitely help with sequels or other games those studios make in the future.

They are way ahead of you. The new ARG is launching tomorrow at i-am-freeman.com

The page features a ten year countdown clock, but the clock will finish five minutes early if we all solve the ARG. We can do it!

I couldn't believe the complainers. This promotion is an example of how Valve is the most pro-gamer, pro-indie company in the industry.

The final stages of the ARG were not executed perfectly, but it wasn't for a lack of trying on Valve's part. This whole thing was complicated, and had a lot of moving parts.

Alot of the complaints were about how they handled some things badly.

The unlock was a few hours early. They could have done better than that. They set the artificial number of "games played" at a number which could have been lowered.

They told people if they found 36 potatoes in the games, they would recieve a "non-hat related surprise."

Those people who put in the effort to do this were awarded with the Complete Valve Pack.

Initially, this sounds like a great idea. Except most of the people who had bought the Potato Sack pack were already huge Valve fans, and already had all Valve games. They were doing it to unlock Portal 2 earlier. Topping this, they sold the Potato Sack pack AND Portal 2 in a bundle. So it led alot of people to go "Hey, I'm going to buy both anyway, why not buy them at the same time?"

So they buy both of them, put in a ton of work, and Valve goes "Here, here's copies of all Valve games you already have. And Portal 2, oops, you just bought it."

And none of them except Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 can be gifted if you have more than one copy. So they got burned by supporting Valve, by supporting the indie devs, and for the hard work (and yes, it was hard. Some of those potatoes required alot of time, and work) they got nothing but a copy of Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 they could give to a friend. The fact that they were given a copy of Portal 2 AFTER buying it pissed them off.

It was handled badly.

So "ton of work" = playing fun indie games.

I dunno, I spent four hours trying to get a Gold Medal in Audiosurf's Portal level, and I still feel like going back to play it. Also, I know of a few people that got all 36 potatoes and hadn't bought Portal 2, so that's a win/win situation for them.

Ton of work = playing hard level on hard difficulty and getting perfect score.

If you didn't play the other games, don't judge the time it took. Audiosurf wasn't exactly the hardest one.

Yes, it was great for the people who hadn't bought Portal 2. But the fact that they said "Hey, get all 36, and get a prize! Here, buy Portal 2 with it.", when one of the prizes was Portal 2, reeks of money-grabbing.

Yes, I did play most of the other games, (except for Amnesia, that game gives me the creeps, and The Wonderful End of the World, I just didn't want that game) and they were all fun to play in. Maybe not everyone is skilled enough to get all the potatoes, but that's what I like the most. This throws me back to the times in which to achieve things in games you had to actually try.

I mentioned Audiosurf's example because, of all potatoes I got, that was the one that took the most time for me.

Yeah, the prize wasn't that great, but they actually did make all of the games giftable. The only games worth gifting were TF2, L4D, L4D2, Portal, and Portal 2 since everyone pretty much either has everything else or they are way outdated. I spent about 15 hours getting my golden potato and honestly would have rather gotten a TF2 hat out of it. But hey, I made a few of my friends happy with gifting those games.

"And none of them except Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 can be gifted if you have more than one copy."

This is incorrect. It is possible to gift all of the Valve Complete Pack games, having already owned all the original copies (with my own experience verifying this).

Then that change was made AFTER everyone complained. Because prior to this, you couldn't gift any of them except Half-Life 2 and Episode 1. That makes it better then.

And I knew I was going to get downvoted.

"Oh God, no. Don't disagree! The explanation of why some people were pissed doesn't apply to me, because I'm happy with what I got! And I can't see why anyone wouldn't be!"

I'm thinking that as well, that they changed it after people complained, which they were right to do. You shouldn't have gotten downvoted IMO, it's all basically true, it could have been handled a lot better, especially for the main players of the ARG (unlike me who just used the ARG wiki.) And another note: While it was very cool that Valve got these developers and games into the spotlight, after busting my butt trying to get potatoes I pretty much never want to play those games again.

And for the record, I'm a total Valve whore and will always be. I will continue to buy their games throw my money away through microtransactions without hesitation. In the end, Valve is a company, and they need money to continue putting out great products. And I believe they are one of the few companies that do deserve the ridiculous amount of money they are making.

It was a failure because instead of uniting everyone like these things are supposed to do it split the community and pissed people off. They could have done a lot better, the simplest thing they could have fixed was the ridiculous requirement for unlocking the game, having the game come out after the consoles and during a time when most people were sleeping was like spitting in the face of everybody who bought the potato sack thinking the game would come out during the weekend like Valve was implying. Theres no excuse for that and its going to taint all of their future promotions.

Yeah. Like that's a good idea.

I didn't buy the Potato pack and I certainly wont be buying games from these developers again. Valve are allowed if they pick up the pace and stop selling premium games with premium priced micro transactions for character clothes.

The hate for this ARG mystifies me. A fan video with clips of people involved in the ARG thanking valve and the indy dev's who made this amazing and fun experience has gotten almost an even number of downvotes than it got upvotes. People can be real jerks.

My only complaint is.. while it was really awesome how GLaDOS "took" the most active members of the ARG solvers... it completely tanked the community as a whole... interesting social experiment though "what happens when a bunch of random strangers working together have all of their leadership stripped away from them with only a few more steps to before the project is completed?" the answer... Troll-central...

I though the whole idea was pretty cool, even if all it did was release Portal 2 a few hours earlier. I didn't actually buy the bundle (I already owned 5 of the games), but I did buy Defense Grid, and that game is excellent.

I thought the whole idea was pretty cool, even if the end result was slightly disappointing. It did increase my personal hype level for the game. I didn't buy the bundle because I already owned half of the games, but I did buy Defense Grid, and that game is excellent. As is Portal 2.

This was a load of horse crack. I can't believe they forced people to play games and spend money just to play something they had preordered sooner.

My opinion of valve plummeted. Between this, the Portal 2 shop and the TF2 shop I'm starting to dislike them.

"Valve had only one idea: releasing Portal 2 on Steam early through this ARG"

Really? All that planning for a couple hours?...thanks?

I am greatly behind the part where they put in a hard effort to support indie developers, but overall it was pretty bad PR for the community at large. I never had any intention of buying Portal 2 on Steam but I sympathize with the people who participated in the ARG and were duped into thinking they were getting a greater reward.

Well, even if the reward was a bit of a fizzle, it was new content in discounted games and people probably got more satisfaction from the challenge itself. Also think of the potato-collecting and the free games awarded to those who participated.

@Haggard - The free games were only for people that participated all the way through, right? That couldn't have been many people.

I think Valve's big mistake here (and the reason trolls are dinging them on metacritic) is that they didn't give any sense of scale for how much time users could shave off of the launch of Portal 2. People were thinking days, Valve was thinking hours. When people realized that it wasn't going to unlock days early, they got angry, and the results of that can be seen across the internet.

Generally speaking, I think people just really need to grow up. I'll admit that I was kind of miffed for a second, until I realized that the game wasn't going to unlock that day, and went to bed. Some people seem unable to let things go.

I still don't get the complaints? Instead of putting ads on every gaming website valve sells you games super cheap and adds a community driven minigame to them, but your complaining because they didn't do more? I'd hate to have fans like Valves. I can see why the next half life is taking so long. If it didn't affect the loyal fans I'd hope they took 5 more years.

You apparantly don't know the facts or even read the article since the developers of each game were responsible for putting the Portal 2-themed stuff in their games, not Valve.

Let me break it down real simple for you.

"Play these games, get the game released early."

(Thousands of copies sold, and hundreds of thousands of game players later.)

"Congrats. Here's your reward. 10 hours earlier playing Portal 2."

I think people forget that although it may have come out early by a few hours in America for the rest of the world it came out over 2 days early meaning that all the people playing portal 2 on steam in the rest of the world didn't have to avoid the internet for 2 days just so things aren't ruined for them

The idea wasn't bad, but the execution was. Having a timer that was heavily implied that portal 2 would release at the end of the timer and then have another timer was screw up number one. The second screw up was that they said if you play the games in the potato sack(A $40 purchase), the game would release early. Sorry, that was a flat out lie. Everybody who was watching the bars load, soon realized (bringing up graphs and everything to prove it) that the bars were moving at a constant rate, regardless of how many cpu's were playing. That means it was FIXED from the start. Once everyone realized that their actions made NO DIFFERENCE, the mood really turned sour. People were already pissed off about getting duped into thinking the game was released at the end of the first timer, then finding out that playing the patato sack did nothing in the end just added fuel to the fire. The reward of getting the valve set was a joke because most people already have all the games. They also opened themselves to potential lawsuits for false advertising. Valve might have thought this was a good april fools prank and were just having fun, which would have been fine on APRIL 1st! After that, its not a April fools prank anymore. Valve screwed this one, with that being said, I loved portal 2 and still support valve, I just hope they never try that again.
