Excellent...more DLC!

The AI is still shit and the multiplayer has been totally broken since the games release six months ago but as long as they keep pumping out new things we can buy it's all good right?

Money grabbing whores.

The Dutch are from the Netherlands, not Denmark. You probably mean Danish.

Oooooooh! Nice to finally see the vikings. Would have been awesome with a norwegian tribe too but it's fair seeing as Norway was a part of Denmark for nearly 400 years. I can accept this. If only someone could remake/remaster Hammer of The Gods...

I've been playing Civ 4 with BTS expansion for a few weeks. Based on what I've been reading about Civ 5, I think I'm going to wait for a roll-up of all these civ 5 expansions before I make the leap up to Civ 5.

@Mr Itcher
You'd be better never touching Civ 5. I know I would have been a lot happier having never touched it.

Civ 4 was great and I really was expecting Civ 5 to take that greatness and clean it up and refine it. Instead, they chop it off at the knees, put lipstick on its mangled body and shave its head in order for it to be simplistic.

Now, I will admit that the lipstick is quite deceptive as it does a pretty good job to hide the flaws, but once you peel that back, you find a game that is mentally unstable and plain stupid, far too simplistic and that it has grand delusions of being Risk instead of Civilization.

Civilization V is closer the Risk than it is Civilization IV. It's just military, really, anything diplomatic is dumbed down and just stupid. There's absolutely no politics or AI. Did a "friend" (If you can even get them to like you while growing) of yours just get a city captured? Thought it would be a good idea to get it back to them? Yeah, they'll chastise and hate you for that.

The game is only good at taking your military units and attacking other people. Again...Risk....

@Mmmmz

that's not entirely fair, you can have more then 1 unit per territory in Risk.

@Misfit Toy

the game was on sale last week or the week before I think.

DLC is ridiculously overpriced too, well the scenarios at least, the civs are just overpriced.

Yeah, you know, just go ahead and take the Mac tag off for this game. The Mac version is unplayable.

While we're all complaining, here's an angry letter I just sent to Steam yesterday demanding a refund:

I purchased Civilization 5 shortly after it was released for the Mac, and I have been nothing but disappointed. I am a software engineer, and I own a 2010 MacBook Pro with 4gb of RAM and discrete nVidia graphics, well above the minimum specs for Civ5's Mac port. I wasn't expecting the kind of performance you'd get from a dedicated top-of-the-line gaming PC, but what I got is so bad that I'm honestly shocked you allowed the game to be sold to unsuspecting customers in such a completely unplayable state. The game simply cannot run with a playable level of performance, even at minimum detail and at the lowest resolution (much less at native), even after the most recent patch which promised performance increases (4/19/11). On a small map, 10 turns in, with only 12 city-states and 6 civilizations, the game slows to a crawl, and it becomes virtually unplayable halfway through any game as the AI turns (even after the patch's improvements) begin to stretch out for minutes at a time. Halfway through an epic game, each individual AI turn takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Graphics glitches are all over the place, right from the start of a new game. This, of course, is assuming that the game doesn't crash on startup, as soon as you click on the main menu, or when loading a map, which happens more often than not. A quick Google search shows that these problems are very commonplace. I have even seen people who claim to be playing the game on their brand-new top-tier Mac Pros complain of unplayable performance. If an 8-core, dual-GPU desktop system can't play this game, what hope do 90% of Mac users who are using nothing more than integrated graphics have? I have been a long-time user of Steam and was thrilled when you opened your service to Mac users. I also love the way a single purchase of a multi-platform game will allow you to play it on both Windows and Mac. I am aware that I could install Windows in Boot Camp and play Civ5 in Steam there, but I didn't buy a Mac so that I could drop everything and restart my laptop every time I might want to catch a few quick turns in Civ5, and I certainly didn't wait until the Mac version was released so that I could play the already available Windows version. Having said all of this, I think that it is only reasonable for me to request a full refund for the game. I have owned Civ5 for months and have never one time been able to enjoy, much less complete, a single game because the performance renders it an exercise in frustration and futility. I am willing to accept either a refund to my purchasing card or in the form of a gift certificate or other form of store credit. Please let me know if this is acceptable. I will not continue to use the Steam service if I am both unable to receive a refund for a defective product and cannot count on the service to adequately QA its content. I hope that this can be resolved quickly and that I can continue to be a Steam customer.

YEAH. Can't wait to not get that refund.

Unfortunately there's a few things that Steam is not entirely responsible for, which leads to other arguements about why people really really dislike or don't trust Steam.

Steam does not QA content like Civ 5. Firaxis and 2K Games do the QA work. PC games don't have to pass submission processes like a PS3 or 360 console and can ship with the intention of patching things in the furture, especially since you basically need Steam running to play the game and would automatically download the patches. Steam is more or less just a third party content ditributor, love them or hate them.

I would redirect your frustration and send your letter to the devs, Firaxis and Aspyr.

Civ V for Mac was ported by Aspyr. I'm not sure how much control they have with patch updates etc.,but after reading other posts about the Civ V Mac version and previous Aspyr support for other games they've handled, it seems like they have a track record of not keeping their ports updated with any efficiency.

I think most of the complaints you'll find about the game are from the Mac version. Sure the AI isn't perfect, but at least Firaxis is still trying to improve things with regular patches, which Mac users are behind on :( .They released a new patch with the new viking DLC, which I tihnk did address some diplomacy issues, so enjoy the little things in the background that most people don't even notice ;)
