As far as I can tell, Splash Damage is giving them access to nearly everything, short of a mod download for them. I don't see the issue here. Console gamers do just fine with only half the stuff the PC gamers get.

Yes, because being able to run your own dedicated servers without being required to rent them from a specific data center is an inherently awful thing that PC gamers will be incredibly dissatisfied with. /s

I find people like you to be incredibly amusing; you'll complain about one specific sector of the gaming industry without realizing that the bitching, moaning, and groaning from people like you consistently makes up 75-80% of the posts on any single Joystiq thread. If PC gamers are whiners as a whole, you console fanboys are the most miserable lot to ever visit this site.

I guess you are new to games?

You're lucky, not to have seen features removed for no apparent reason, to see everything take step backwards instead of forwards.

Perhaps its whining, perhaps its not the best way to give back critizism, however it is atleast a united front against low quality products.

Oh grow up you goober.

Yeah PC gamers (like myself) get annoyed when companies do kinda crappy things (like no dedicated servers). But then again, why shouldn't we argue for features that the huge majority of our group wants?

That's just being a normal consumer.

Yeah don't get addicted to upgrading your PC, just buy a new $600+ console every 5-6 years. like normal people.

I always find it sorta funny when someone with all the major consoles will say something like buying a $150 graphics card is insane. It happens surprisingly more often than one would think.

I'll almost bet you money that in short order consoles are going to being sold ala carte, just like PCs. Hell this gen has already seen essentially all the PCs failings :P

I'll buy a PC for gaming when Sony, and Microsoft start supporting it with the games they publish. Until then it's an easy decision.

but if sony and microsoft decided to both support the PC with all of their games, hell, I'd jump on that in a heart beat, but I have a feeling they want to continue selling their consoles and controllers to me as well.

Don't believe the FUD. PC Gaming is that expensive. Now if you want to run everything at huge resolutions with 16x AA and max settings, well then yeah it's time to buy a $500 video card.

But even a decent mid range PC rig is going to look better than Xbox or PS3. And you get other obvious benefits outside of games with a PC. Let's be honest everyone here owns a PC of some sort, it probably isn't all that expensive to update whatever desktop your using now (laptops obviously another ball game) to run games at decent settings.

Eh, it really isn't that different, monetarily or philosophically, than buying another console. Granted, at this point in the consoles' life-spans, they are cheaper than building a middling gaming PC, but assuming you aren't an avowed cutting-edge technophile, it's fairly reasonable.

It's fair enough to not want to mess around with it (as PC gaming is fraught with random issues that you have to figure out), but I don't think it's any more valid to say "it isn't worth the trouble until everyone supports it" than it is to say "I have a PS3, no way I'm getting an Xbox."

Each system has different advantages, and different exclusives. The PC is a bit of a different beast from the consoles, but respectfully, I don't feel your argument holds much weight. Though you're certainly entitled to have your own priorities :)

You'll by a PC for gaming when Microsoft supports it?

I understand wanting all the Xbox or Sony titles in one place, but that's the same as saying I'll by a console when every game is sold on it. PC gaming is different animal from console gaming, and asking for PC's to act like consoles or vice versa is ridiculous. Play the system (PS, console, handheld) for it's strengths.

Also developers make games not the hardware makers. You can find Microsoft games online, maybe not everybody elses though.

Forget about price and knowledge needed to build a PC for a minute. If I had a PC I would be missing out on 95% of the games I want to play. So I would have a $600-700 web browser that I would play 3 games on

with $600-700 worth of consoles I can actually play 95% of the games that I'm interested in.

I mean battlefield 3 and brink will be sick on a PC, but I'll trade that to play GoW3, heavy rain, alan wake, RDR, infamous, motorstorm, LA noire and dozen's of others

"Dozens"? Really? You do realize the vast majority of games these days are multiplatform, right? And that the vast majority of those are better on the PC? Higher framerates, higher resolutions, higher AA, higher AF, mods, quicker and more precise controls, dedicated servers, etc.

Seriously, come up with a list of 12 upcoming games that you're looking forward to that aren't coming out on PC.

Some like the Mods, some like that you get amazing exclusives (indie and MS and PC exclusive)

Don't Knock it til you try it, PC is where the Hard Core Thrive!!!

In short, Splash Damage is going old-school, and allowing players (as well as third-party server providers) to run whatever games they'd like on their own.

That's not old school. That's called being a mature company.

I'm just glad it's there. Means the gaming community I play in will be able to host a Brink server in addition to our L4D, TF2, DoD and MNC servers which makes me super happy.

One of the best parts of dedicated servers is playing with a large community of good people.

This is seriously shaping up to be my goty.

Basically when I heard it was a class based shooter where the classes are actually different similar to tf2 AND the devs emphasized quick movement for all classes I was hooked.

I may be playing this game for years where ME3 and Deus Ex and Gears of war I don't expect to last more than 6 months.

Dedicated servers should be standard on PC. There isn't much to appreciate, its like saying you should appreciate PC games have customisable controls or graphics options.

It may be a sad state of affairs, where celebration for such basic needs is cause for celebration - but given the recent erosion of PC features, I have no problem cheering on developers who get it right.

So, go Splash Damage! Woo! Time to check my bank account before I pull the trigger on a Pre-Purchase.

This is great news indeed. However, I think it is telling (and sad) that this is a news item. Dedicated servers used to be a given for PC multiplayer shooters, now it's a news item and a reason to release a FAQ.

Seeing as Their alternatives are,
Hosting the servers themselves which will cost them $$$
Shipping a game with peer-to-peer, which will suck ...

Its a shrewd decision.

Hi there, I've been playing PC games for the better part of 15 years. I started with Descent, TFC, CS, Quake - etc.

I am very much looking forward to Brink and have been following it since I heard of it over a year ago. I was very relieved to read yesterday that they are supporting this much freedom and dedicated servers.

With that said, you are going to say that we should be thankful? We should appreciate it? I will tell you that I AM thankful, and I DO appreciate it -- but I don't need some pompous reminder in a Joystiq article telling me that I should be thankful for something that is considered the bread and butter of PC gaming.

I should be thankful for dedicated servers and non-confining hosting options? Should I also be thankful that this isn't another COD game?

Please, tell me what else I should be thankful for.

It is Splash Damage that will end up being thankful for their new fanbase who purchased their game in droves -- simply because they made the game correctly, and supported PROPER PC FEATURES that should be supported in ALL PC GAME RELEASES.

THANKS!
