Gaming and caffeinated beverage-centric news site Coffee With Games has once again compiled a number of statistics for Monster Hunter Tri, Capcom's Wii-based online action-RPG -- which celebrated its first birthday last week.
The results are, well, startling: Out of nearly 70,000 players who have reported playing the game through Wii's Nintendo Channel, an astonishing 6,313,120 total hours of play time have been logged. That's an average of 90 hours and 25 minutes for each reported player.
Of course, that figure's predicated on the idea that those 6.3 million hours are spread evenly among the player base. There's a good chance that a majority of the crowd played the game for a much more modest amount of time, while about 500 people have played the game unceasingly for the 8,800 or so hours that the game's been out. Oh, man. We accidentally bummed ourselves out, there.

Not me :(
I tried to get into it, but only managed to quest about four or five quests online. Too much elitism for my taste. Still, the single player was quite good.

Yeah, Monster Hunter is one of my favorite game franchises and I loved playing online on the PS2. But unfortunately, the niche nature of the game has instilled some disgusting elitism from much of the player base. I mostly play single player these days since the PSP's portability lends itself well to the gameplay.

Yeah, problem is you've got to find a group of friends or awesome people to always team with... otherwise you'll get a lot of "That's not how you use it. Stop it. Just GTFO."
...I only played with my gf. Would've been nice to have two more people playing with us, but wayyyy too much pressure whenever you team with a "l337" player...

Some people can get insufferable, but I only encountered that on the highest difficulties, as long as you're not being totally stupid. At the highest difficulties, however, it comes to be a matter of conflicting goals (i'll bring Alatreon up. If some people in your party want to sleep-bomb for the skyscraper horns, they'll tear you a new one if you're not adequately equipped for sleep-bombing, which is otherwise a very esoteric technique)

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me. I bought the game a couple months after release, and I just got shitted on online when I wanted to do the 1-Star Quests. I thought it would be good and actually put my WiiSpeak to good use, but it just wasn't a fun environment for me to play in. Oh, and there's also something very upsetting about stabbing a 20 foot dragon for ten minutes only to die all at once from some cheap enemy AI tactics.

I never had any troubles like this, though I don't have wiispeak so maybe that's why. playing online 4 player has been loads of fun I usually don't care what we do just kick back. it's only bad when you have someone on your team who consistently dies thus causing you to fail when the rest of your team are skilled enough to win without them but I never complain, there's only one way to learn!

Yeah, pattern memorization was a deep part of Monster Hunter. While some people catch on the patterns quickly and use it to their advantage, others take a while and get pummeled by it each and every time until they find the right pattern.
For me, I have to get "acquainted" with the monster first, often having to do the same mission over and over again until I "understood" the monster's pattern. The Royal Ludroth was the pattern I memorized the best, and it helped me fight against the Lagiacrus (since it did similar patterns on and off-water).
Every person has their own weapon, own style of fighting, and in my opinion: their own monster. Me? It was Long Sword, distraction, Royal Ludroth and Rathian.
It helps to get into that flow, makes the game a lot more enjoyable. But when people just ruin it for you with their elitism, it's hard to keep going... ...for me, I just stopped because without 4 players and with our weak armors+weapons, the Jhen Mhoran was too difficult to bring down. That mission was a bane to our fun. D:
But if you ever decide to get back into it and need tips, this guy helped me out on my hardest battles:

Eh, its not just monster patterns, some people will get anal very fast if you don't "swing, up swing, swing, up swing" all the time on one part, or if you accidentally miss the head of a Barroth due to lag and off towards the side and snag a person near the legs. While the elitism is most around the higher ranks, it still exists at the lower tier because some people like to make new characters and play through them as well.
And I can almost guarantee that a good chunk of that time was from the die-hard fanbois for this game. While I love Monster Hunter, the Wii version just felt a little defanged for me...

Yeah monster hunter isn't for everyone. It looks simple but trying to mix and see what skills and weapons work and trying to break what you want on monsters is when it gets technical and not to mention that you don't get to the good stuff for quite a while.
I have around 350 hours under my belt. The game gets damn addicting once you get a good hunting and going around tryin to get everything. I stille want my ancient great sword but I stopped going for that a long time ago since my great sword is better and I stopped playing 2 months ago.

Yea monster hunter isn't for everyone because it's actually more technical when you look outside of hitting the monster.
I have around 350 under my belt and I don't even have all the good items collected but I didn't go for them that much and I stopped playing maybe 3 months ago.

Hopefully with the advanced tech of the NGP, Capcom won't hide behind the PSP for all their Monster Hunter games and will be required to step up their game. I mean, NGP is near PS3 quality graphics, so naturally if they make a MH Portable on NGP, they should might as well work on a PS3 version.

PSP is cool for diehards. Unfortunately the lack of the second analog stick is a deal breaker for me. This is usually where a PSP vet will say something like "Learn to claw".
If you have a wii, it's very much worth it.

200 hours, and i only really bothered with one main weapon/armor set at the highest level: Alatreon Lance and a set of Agnaktor Armor gemmed to make my strategy of lance-turtling almost impregnable. The only things that can even touch me when blocking are Jho's jaw, Uragaan's steamroller, and being bucked by Jhen. Quite satisfying when you can let Alatreon's fireballs wash over you like a gentle spring breeze :P

The only thing you need to understand is that Monster Hunter is deceptive: many attacks can't be "blocked" clean and clear. Some monster attacks just negate your shield use completely, and some will do only do lesser damage if you're blocking. Because i sucked ass at dodging and preferred the defense-heavy lance, i built my entire set around making sure nothing could damage me if i was facing it and had my shield up.

@Apsac D The SNS is frequently underrated. I applaud you for using it. It can get expensive in the long run though, being the trapper/fluter of the group, but damn you can drop status effects quick with an SNS.
I prefer Greatswords myself. Nothing like getting a fully charged meaty hit in on a hunt. I occasionally play with Hammers and Hunting Horns myself, especially if I have to farm Raths.

This game has been in the back of my mind ever since it came out. I've actually been planning to get it within the next week from Amazon (or maybe even tomorrow if they have it at the mall).
If I could get even 30 hours out of it, I'd feel like I had gotten my money's worth.

This is my first Monster Hunter game ever played (don't own a PSP, Japanese Wii, Japanese 360, or even a PS2) and I absolutely love it. Started playing with a couple of friends and strangers since day one and on occasion, I've played with a-holes online. One a-hole cursed me out during a 4-person 6-star double trouble quest because I used the "egg trick" to lure ian and los to area 8 on D. Island (I was trying to bring back an ian that was leaving that area where another person and I were hacking and slashing it) and he kept calling me a noob because of my actions and armor (it was Ingot+) while he was wearing Jho armor. The funny thing is that he spent more time typing than fighting and fainted twice. He was 2 ranks above me (my HR was 57 at the time), fainted twice in the quest and still insisted on calling me a noob. After successfully completing the quest and getting back into the game lobby, he still grilled me, kept repeating "I never faint. I never faint." and so I said my say, told the others good luck playing with this a-hole and went to another room. It was that simple to avoid these so called "l33t" people. Currently clocked in over 860 hours. HR is 180. I average about 2-3 hours of offline play to gather items to use online such as wyvern fangs and godbugs to make lifepowders, do the free hunt and occasionally fight Ceadeus for deep dragon gem. I mainly use GS and on very few occasions LS. Nowadays, I help low ranks and occasionally farm for pale extracts, hvy armor spheres, etc. I rarely do arena (unless it's an event quest). Favorite armorsets: both regular and + Lagi sets for perks and jewel slot availabity and Rathalos+ for perks and bad@ss look. I do own more sets, but those are the ones I use often. Favorite weapon: Alatreon Revolution. Once you get this one, it makes the Elder Monument obsolete. I have other GS's (23 of the 24 fully upgraded GS's), but A.R. is the sharpest and most prized. I'm not l33t, I just do my best to help out.
