They're giving away over 100 dollars of PlayStation content for free, going to pay for new credit cards if needed, paying for you to be in a free identity theft program that costs tons of money AND they are rebuilding the servers and enhancing everything yet everyone is still saying its not enough.

Microsoft gave away Undertow for free when XBL was hacked...a crappy 10 dollar game. So i feel very, very happy with what Sony is doing

But F*ck you for trying to praise Sony for their actions here. Sony sure as hell better try and make things right. Not for people like you or I but for their own future as a trusted developer.

Over the holidays a couple years ago XBL had some partial outages and stuff from capacity issues, DLC downloads would error out. They gave people a free game as compensation.

@RoNiZZiE Gah gah gah GAH aarrrghhh.

Stuff did go down with Bungie.net, but it was NOT this severe. And it was completely unrelated to the XBL "downtime," which was caused because too many people were trying to access the network around Christmas time. It was not nearly the same situation where they pulled all the servers offline because of a hacking attempt.

In both cases, there was an outage. Sony's situation has been more serious, to the point where they have to hold a press conference. Both companies gave/are giving just compensation. The long-term ramifications will probably be worse for Sony, which is why they feel the need to recoup a little more customer assurance than Microsoft, which basically had to apologize for not expecting so many people to like them.

In the end I'm just glad this is finally going to be over. This was a nightmare for Sony, but it looks like they're trying to do right in the best way they can. Kudos to Microsoft for their efforts in the past, and now tentative kudos to Sony. Everyone reset your passwords and get some sleep. :)

Because Duke Nukem Forever comes out next month.

And the world is going to end.

@ninjablaze the PS+ sub will probably entitle everyone 50-100$ in free content and discounts itself. The free download everyone will get will probably be at least 10 bucks.

And the sources are in the comments.

A quote from an old Kotaku article and a Microsoft employee:
((Finisterre says that he called Microsoft Tech and they confirmed that "accounts are being stolen and that "Hackers have control of Xbox live and there is nothing we can do about it"))

That was referring to the hack.

Sony's is way more serious. But they are literally doing EVERYTHING they can to solve the problem and prevent it from happening again.

We're getting tons of free stuff and whole new, super secure servers....and when you think about it...nothing has even happened to us but just 2 weeks without online gaming.

I am completely satisfied with their doings.

@RoNiZZiE A couple of dozen people compared to 10 million is a rather large difference, don't you think. And even the couple dozen that did get affected in the XBL incident didn't get their CC info taken.

Hopefully nothing happened in the 2 weeks PSN was down other than lack of online gaming, but it's too early to tell either way. I mean, Kaz Hirai today said "we can't rule out the possibility" that credit card info was compromised", and we already know for a fact they have our name and street address.

Also Xbox uses Windows Live for auth and billing, and if it got hacked, it would be a way bigger deal than Xbox. They use Live Auth for all the Microsoft properties, like Hotmail which is the largest email provider in the world or something. So the system predates Xbox and is pretty proven.

I think what a lot of people are complaining about is that it feels more like sony is trying to sell us something rather than compensate for our stolen information. I dont want a free month of some service that sony wants me to fall in love with, that i may forget to cancel before they charge me for the next month. Hell i'd have been more happy if they just gave me a game or something, maybe a list of 5 to choose from from their online store. or hell maybe a $10 PSN credit.

It is the 360 folks who are jealous of all the good games on the PS3 over the past 3 years. Their arguments of "the PS3 has no games" are still being sung by the most religious of zealots but like their other arguments are based on fiction.

I find it very interesting that these 360 fans are trolling PS3 stories en massed and frequently.

It's quite telling....

If only the passion of these people could be directed into helping people in Japan or Haiti instead of screaming for Sony to be bankrupted and shutdown. And those are the tame comments...

$100? haha dude either you only buy from the home shopping network or you are just like giving the casheirs massive tips.

PSN+ is like $5 Qoriocity is $10 and the free game will likely cost $10 so thats $25 at most!

I dont know about you but having your personal information safe is worth a lot more to me than $25.

also XBL having slight server overload and a bunch of idiots spamming 10th presiege on MW2 is not equal to hacking, pirating, server shut down and information theft!

good god! I bet if Jack Tretton came to your house and raped and killed your family you will still think that it was an act of kindness from Sony. sheesh stop deluding yourself and open your eyes.

@(Unverified) From Sony's press release:
Complimentary Offering and “Welcome Back” Appreciation Program
While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.

The idea of $100 in compensation is sort of "eye of the beholder" to me. A movie, a month of PSN+, a month of Qriocity (if you had it). That is not $100. The discounts on games in + are permanent (you bought them), but the free stuff will disappear if you don't subscribe. The free Qore and the free DLs it may have will be permanent. Sony also said "Additional “Welcome Back” entertainment and service offerings will be rolled out over the coming weeks...", so who knows what that will be worth. $100, not likely. $40-$50 is more likely, depending on what you choose to use.

PS+ is not the same as 100 dollars worth of free games. once that trial expires, so do the games. as in, they will be unplayable, and you'll have to delete them all.

all people are really getting with PS+ is a month long discount on a few games.

Read the full report. The cc info isn't believed to be stolen as it was encrypted while personal information wasn't. You know what I see? A bunch of xbox fanboys taking pot shots. How do you know that there has been an attack on XBL servers? You don't. Instead of gloating like a pissy bitch why not let this thing play out? How about not sensationalizing everything. They learnt of the intrusion and shut down the network. Following a thorough forensic analysis they concluded cc info probably wasn't compromised and promptly warned people once the analysis was complete. If anything, you are lucky that PSN was targeted first because it's a wake up call for MS & Nintendo.

Regardless of what your rose colored glasses allow you to see XBL servers aren't an impenetrable fortress.

You are the WORST kind of fanboy. I'd pay to see you feign outrage over XBL servers being hacked. Knowing MS they probably wouldn't tell you until you threatnef to sue them anyway like with the 360's launch.

I hope your enjoying this because something similar will eventually happen to you and then you'll have to sort out fact from fanboy fiction.

Keep up the hyperbole ... My components run on your tears.

I know I'm way late on this, but...

Johnny, I love how you follow me around, responding to my posts 1/2 a day after I post them, attempting to put words in my mouth.

Where am I taking pot shots? Am I gloating, saying "hahaha, PSN is down?" What am I sensationalizing? The only thing I did in this thread was argue against and previously stated point, which I believe to be wrong, and as both an Xbox owner AND someone who has education in the field of network security, I believe my opinions are valid ones.

No where did I state that XBL servers are "an impenetrable fortress", again this is you putting words in my mouth.
In my entire post history, I DEFY YOU to find ONE SINGLE COMMENT, in which I indicate that the attacks on Sony are a good thing.

I didn't, because they AREN'T a good thing, and as someone who, once again, knows a little bit (but not a lot) about this network security mumbo jumbo, I have geniune sympathy for both Sony as a corporation, and their network security team, who probably has a thousand fires lit under the asses by the higher ups, who are probably demanding them to wave magical fairy wands to make this all go away, when in reality its a massive amount of work.

As for me being lucky PSN was attacked, well, yes and no. Given that MS software has been hacked in some way, shape, or form, every day for the past 20 years, they are probably slightly better at handling this sort of a situation than a hardware company. Just like Sony makes hardware that doesn't blow up every few years, but has some obvious weaknesses in the software side of things. Different company, different strengths/weaknesses. But yeah, I'm sure MS is probably double-checking their hacker-seeking missiles right about now. Nintendo, I’m not so worried about given that fact that in order to attack a network infrastructure, it has to exist in the first place.
Yeah, if MS servers I’d be a bit pissed off, but not really surprised, given the fact that MS is widely hated in both the white hat and black hat community. In all of my network security classes, I’ve yet to meet a single person that was anything better than neutral about MS.
I’m NOT enjoying this. I have friends that have PS3’s. None of them stupid enough to link their CC’s to it, but ones that are probably looking forward to a increase in spam on their junk email accounts. As for the fanboy fiction, again, please point me towards something that you can give me a source proving that it is indeed fiction, and I will gladly man up and eat my words.
I am seriously trying to remember where in my past I wounded you so much that you would actively wish harm upon me, ( you want hackers to get my CC number? The f*ck dude?) but I’m totally drawing a blank. If at some point in time I pissed in your cornflakes, I do apologize.
As a closing statement, I would ask for emails of other people who’s components run on my tears, so I can start selling them in 1oz bottles, and also would ask where I can buy a pair of rose-colored glasses, as none of the Sunglass Huts around here sell those.
Sincerely,
“The worse kind of fanboy (trademark pending)”
