The fact that it is functional makes such a silly decison totally acceptable.

@Dlord: Silly question (please bear with me):

Don't you need both hands to play in a handheld?

Yes, because getting a skull, devil chick, or rose makes COMPLETE sense. This is at least something that interests him and he has made some connection to. Personally I don't have any tattoos, but i don't see how this is any worse than any other tattoo.

Since Joystiq won't allow it, imagine those both in bold to reiterate my point. 85%+ people get ugly stupid pointless tattoos. How is this different?

A Nintendo AR card is stupid I agree, but I would totally be down with a QR code tattoo that links to your medical record

While I applaud the dedication they DO make non permanent tattoos... in fact they make them for just such an occasion... heck what if it didn't work afterward? barely does now with all that jittering.

Yeah I got an e-reader card tattooed on my butt cheeks. It is hard squeezing my ass through the e-reader slot but I can do it with a bit of lube. My only regret is choosing Ice Climber.

When the 3DS becomes obsolete, it will just look like he was marked or branded by some kind of Nintendo-loving alien species....or something.

"of the Mii AR card on his arm"

That card is the general AR card for all of the mini games, too. So his arm could be a shooting range, a Fishing pond, and even morph into a golf course of sorts, lava included.

...Totally worth it, right?

Always strange to me to see what people don't care to have permanently plastered onto their body for the rest of their life. His body not mine so he can do what he wants, but I feel its a little frivolous...

Tattoos in general are only a really bad idea when they are inappropriate images or in a socially unaccepted place on your body. Eyebrow tattoos, or a satanist imagery on your neck? Probably a bad idea just for the social reasons. But otherwise, who cares?

With gamer tattoos you run the risk of growing too old for the image. But plenty of people have the triforce or similar video game art. I don't see much difference here.

@vidguy

I'm not saying I approve of having a Tri-Force tattoo either but at least it's an image which has withstood the test of time and will be recognizable.

This is a fairly new feature which might get dropped next time Nintendo release a handheld.

Being a fan of art, illustration, and even tattoos that are well done / creative.

Sorry but I have to say meh. Its functional yes, but impractical. Wobbly wobbly, wiggly wiggly (shaky screen); "Let me play one handed off my arm!"

I know, game affiliation = gaming news but in the world of tattoos this is quickly thumbed past in a portfolio...

While cool, this is going to be unusable in about 10 years, unless he can keep a functioning 3DS around for the next 50 years so his grandkids can see how the AR works.

He should have had the tattoo done on the top of his forearm so it would be like a hologram star wars thingy and then be about 100x cooler. And make a Mii that looks like Obi Wan or Leia. OR just tape a frickin paper card to your arm for the 5 minutes that this would be fun.

Well that's one way to identify his corpse should his severed arm be all that's left and we get a not-quite-reasonable facsimile of his likeness by scanning that tattoo.
