The only reason anyone cared about the Alan Wake DLC was the illusion that it would actually end at some point in the DLC....not just....y'know....cocktease us.

Yeah, two DLC chapters and still no satisfying conclusion. I hope they are going to release a 3rd DLC to actually finish it up.

I don't think I have bought a single disk for my PC in over 5 years.
Meanwhile I've got a Steam account with nearly 200 games.

@Frozen Radiator PC's are different kind of beast's all together, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will never offer the kind of prices you find on Steam.
DD is not better for the consumer, at least not for those that game primarily on consoles like I do.

I used to game on my PC, but I prefer to sit or lay on my couch like a lazy bum looking at a big screen.

Only b/c console titles would take too long to download, typically?
Why else would this be a bad model?

@kentuckyfried As I stated, the big 3 would never sell ANY of their games for $5 each as I've seen on Steam. Hell I recently bought Bully, Max Payne 1 & 2 for under $8, hell would freeze over before the big 3 sell games at those prices.

200 games whose authentication keys are owned by Gabe Newell is a lot. I hope it works out. I definitely have a few games from Steam--mainly ones that I can't get any other way, like Civ5 and Total War: Empire--but I prefer to not be beholden to some remote authentication server. The recent Sony and Amazon outages are reminders about how unreliable the cloud can be.

Actually a lot of writers use the old-fashioned typewriter instead of computer in their work ...and for a good reason too ..so that their script won't be stolen or leaked

I don't know about that. I easily seized Alan's manuscript. The pages were just lying around on the ground.

I don't trust DD, especially given what's happened to the PSN. Plus, it would be a hundred times easier for developers and publishers to rip off consumers. I have the feeling that when things do go all digital, you'll see large games go the way of the dodo in favor of crappy iPhone-style games or simple multiplayer only games. Both developers and publishers have gotten way too greedy and lazy as of late, especially with the popularity (I'm looking at you EA and Tiger Woods!) and I don't feel the slightest bit bad when one of them shuts down.

Because Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will not drop prices. It will be the exact same situation as it is now except no opportunity for used game buyers or sellers.

If the devs were in charge I'm sure prices would drop. They would have sales and all the great things Steam has but the publishers and manufacturers will be the ones running it and that's no good for anybody.

How exactly is this good for consumers? Aside from the obvious argument that reselling/trading in our purchased merchandise is a right of ours, i'm personally more bummed over the idea that i wont have something physical to put on my shelf.

Software isn't merchandise, it's intellectual property. The discs are merchandise, and naturally you can resell the discs themselves, but that might be pointless...Because even if they do put games on the shelf, and still do give you a disc--which I expect they will continue to do--it'll require single-use authorization codes with online authentication (like Steam games that are sold at retail). So even if they keep boxes on the shelf, you likely still won't be able to resell them. Give up.

And before you mis-interpret me, I'm not saying this is good for consumers. I'm only contradicting your "obvious argument" that it's merchandise.

I like this guy's attitude. I would much rather see developers/publishers (notice the order there) receive ALL of the money I pay for their product as opposed to a portion of it. Don't get me wrong, it would be hard to let go of a physical collection, but I think that overall, at least for me, it would be more beneficial in the end.

out of the 100 million people that had their accounts hacked, what was the number that had credit cards attached? wasn't it like 10.25 million?

If I were selling a game I'd want to reach that other 90 million people, even if some of them are going to buy it used.

Well if I can't sell my games I won't be able to afford more than 3 or 4 games a year. In which case I'm not even going to bother buying a console.

If there are a lot of people like me then gamestops will cease to exist and that means less marketing for games overall.

Usually only 3 or 4 games per console are worth playing each year. Maybe this will help narrow down your taste.

"A download-driven industry, said Myllyrinne, would be "better for consumers, better for the developers and publishers," though he admitted such a shift would be "not so good for retail."

Nice fancy words covering the truth behind: There's more chance to take money from the gamers.

Look, right now, there ones little thing that publishers are not happy with, and that is the "used market". The used market is a fair and valid market in any other industry, being cars, consumer electronics, etc.

Of course that publishers are going to opt for a downloadable-only market, because this way, they ensure that the used market will be virtually inexistent.

Justifications like lower prices, better releases, etc, are just smoke and mirrors. Right now, the prices in digital version of retail games are the same. Look at ME2 for PS3, they both cost the same digital-only or physical retail.

If the market turns into a digital only, the prices will be the same as now, or even higher, as publisher now will gain control of every byte of the game.

Now, the prices stay as they are, because they have a strong competitor: the used market. If some publisher sell the game at $80, the gamers will wait until the prices goes down or get it from the used market, so publisher better sell it at some reasonable price.

With digital only, how we defend? If you want some game, they will be at the same price forever, unless they do some discount or something, but that's another story.

The day when this industry becomes a digital only, that will be the day when I quit gaming.

After how hard Epsilon and Sony got hacked the last thing anyone should be comfortable with is a "digital future". Yeah sure, let's ALL put our faith in random companies and their possibly insecure servers. Eff that noise I'd rather walk to into a bestbuy or walmart and risk the exercise rather than risk going bankrupt over some silly vision of the future that no one knows how to properly protect. These people spend so much time rushing to figure out HOW to change everything that they never stop to think about whether they SHOULD.

The answer is obviously "NO".

Steam prices on older games = awesome.
Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft prices on download games = horrible.

If I can't buy 6month old games for $20 or less I will switch to some other form of entertainment, period.

130+ Xbox games owned
110+ 360 games owned

If the future goes this way I and others like me just wont do it.

Downloadable Content may be a big hit and smaller downloadable games like Limbo may be, but that doesn't mean that's the case for games. I mean really, Microsoft is still at a max of 250GB HDD and charging outragous prices for them as they do with everything. This guy has no idea what he's talking about. SCREW DIGITAL DOWNLOAD! I'm not buying the rights to a game. I WANT TO OWN THE GAME!

i'll gladly give up my discs when new AAA games are priced at $39.99 and drop to $19.99 on their first release anniversary and $9.99 on their second. additionally we need a forward compatibility guarantee no less than 10 years for our digital libraries.

I would hate to see a $59.99 game on PSN/XBLA that never gets a price drop or is on sale. I am not really behind it all, with retail based hard copies you can actually find them cheaper depending where you look. As for digital downloads its not like Steam where they have sales all of the time on older games. I think the day when digital distribution takes over alot of gamers are gonna not go with it. Who wants to wait for a download? Not me I rather have my game in my hands with the book and case. Also with the recent hack on PSN, i am not too safe with Sony if this does happen. Another thing is what happens if your system breaks down? With Sony giving you 5 activations your bound to lose your games tied to your account.

@Art84 You have 5 activations unlimited. It means that you can deactivate at any moment any "activated" PS3. That's if you already have 5 broken PS3 (totally improbable) you can deactivate 1 or all the 5 in order to activate the 6th PS3.

I'm old school and like the physical media. If they go all digital, would they ever release a special edition again? Every one (gamer and non-gamer) always enjoy checking our the AW Book. It would be a shame to never have a chance at AW Vol.2.

Go digital if you want, but don't discontinue the physical media.
