Rumor: 'Wii Select' budget line launching this month
70
After only four and a half years, it looks like Nintendo is finally ready to introduce a line of budget titles in North America. Kotaku reports that the "Wii Select" line will launch alongside the newly discounted Wii, which is rumored to drop to $150 two weeks from now. The first titles reported to be part of the $20 lineup include The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Super Sluggers and Wii Sports.
Yes, Wii Sports is supposedly being removed from its position as the longstanding pack-in for Wii console bundles. Taking the bundle's place will be a Mario Kart Wii bundle, which will be sold at the rumored $150 price point.

You can already pretty much get all those games for $20, however if you like game boxes with ugly labels on them saying they were discounted then I guess they would be a great buy.

There was a time when I genuinely cared about that. And then it came time to replace my stolen game collection, or at least the games I'd wish to play again, and I realized how asinine it was to hunt down non-player's choice / platinum hits / greatest hits copies just for an original label ... spending upwards of $50 more on some games from last and this generation.
Yeah, those splashes of red, yellow/bronze, and silver don't affect me nearly as much as I thought considering the only time I see the cases is when I pull them out to play the sweet gaming goodness contained within.

Some of them aren't so bad. The Nintendo 64 Player's Choice with the gold wasn't bad. But the PSX games with the neon green sucked.

The Gamecube ones weren't so bad either.
What I hate are some of the 360 Platinum cases. I have a copy of Bioshock, and it bugs the crap out of me how the awesome picture of the Big Daddy only takes up a portion of the cover because they have this giant, useless, gray border surrounding it.
Still, when it comes down to it, @Epoque has a point.

That's not true. Zelda and Brawl go for over $20, used. At gamespot it's like $35, used.
I sold my day 1 Zelda for $30 to Best buy... Now I can get it back! (and if I want the old label I just need to find a used copy in good shape... This will also have the effect of pushing used prices down...)

Yeah, and if you wait some more,
The game new will be $20
Then discounted new for $12
Then used for $6
Then you might be lucky to find a scratched loose copy in the trash...for FREE!!!
Anyway, I am more concerned about the Wii account VC games. I mean it was painful to 'sell my full Wii' for cheap when it had about 29 VC games.
My main gripe about Nintendo downloadable games is that they have the same resale value as a used happy meal

Yup, the game is a game, but it is annoying when they change up the box art.
The Nintendo 64's Player's Choice replaced the red stripe on the box with a gold stripe, so the box art itself didn't change. But it sucks when they completely change the art like you said. It's even worse when they change the art on the cartridge/disc.

Haha, Punch Out should have dropped to $20 about a week after it came out. Fun game and all, but it didn't exactly work as advertised.

Yeah Nintendo takes forever to lower the prices on games. First party Nintendo games are the only ones I buy at release because I know it will be years for it to drop in price. It's amazing that Super Mario Galaxy isn't on this list. Contrast that with Portal 2 which isn't hard to find for $40.

At this point, you're right. 5 years into the PS2's lifetime, you could get most of the best games for $10-$15 apiece, and most of these aren't huge improvements over their last-gen counterparts anyway (Personally, I'd much rather play Wind Waker, Double Dash, and Melee over the Wii equivalents.)

Yup and if it was on a service like XBLA, it would have cost $15 new and actually worked well online.

To each his own. Double Dash was pure gold. I found the 2 rider scheme awkward at first but it added a great layer of strategy to your driver choices.
The madness of a 9 lap Baby Park race is great fun. Especially since I seemed to be particularly good at obtaining Bowser & Jr's large spike shells.

I havent seen any ps2 games at that price. Persona 4 is about $23($30-40 new), Devil may cry sold at around $20, and Tales of the Abyss is still up there too. Only games like madden and shovelware is sold low. Hell, my local walgreens is selling it.

I don't know why this showed up where it did, but maybe I'm thinking used or sale games, since I remember getting a PS2 a little late into the cycle (I had a girlfriend that had one when it first came out, but I ended up getting a GC and an Xbox after we broke up) and I scored DMC a couple of Sly Coopers and Ratchet and Clank for dirt cheap in maybe 2004.

Does this mean Mario Kart Wii will be discounted as well? I'd like to get that one but I have trouble paying full price for a three year old game.
I really think Nintendo should have done this earlier. The pricing of first party titles is ridiculous. Though I'm even more annoyed at how little worthwhile software has been coming out on the Wii.

Blah blah long tail. I get that they're cashing in on the fact that they've still got a name that used to be synonomous with "video games" and franchise characters that are among the most recognized in the world, but after a couple of quarters of bleeding money on this console I think they're finally realizing that there is genuine competition for the ever thinning pool of money that people are investing into this hobby.
As Aggi said earlier, when I have the choice of getting Portal 2 two weeks after launch for $10 less than a 3 year old game like Mario Kart (which in itself is really a 13 year old game with slightly spruced up graphics and controls,) you have to wonder how in-touch Nintendo really is with the pulse of the industry (during the periods when they aren't actually leading the charge.)

Regardless of how late Nintendo may or may not be, $20 for Super Smash Bros. Brawl is ridiculously awesome. There is so much game in there it's not even funny. It's kind of gross how much stuff there is to do in it.

@The Pork Brawl for $20 today is not an awesome deal. For twice the money, you can get a game with 10x the content now.

Though I now find myself regretting my purchase of a Wii last week. I could've saved twenty bucks, and gotten a single game I'd actually play instead of two that I couldn't care less about...
Whatever.
It looks like I'll finally be playing Twilight Princess. Not that I didn't already want to, but I adamantly refused to send the message to Nintendo that it's okay to charge consumers fifty f*cking dollars for a five year old GameCube game.

Nintendo could have had most of these as budget titles less then a year after the game was released, like Sony and Microsoft does. The fact that 4.5 years later they're discounting some of them and not others just shows how much Nintendo DOESN'T care about its customers - you're telling me Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario Bros. Wii, Pokemon Whatever, Punch Out (and every other first party title) hasn't made them a crapload of cash already? What else were Wii owners going to buy? Ninja Bread Man? Come on.
I know this isn't going to be a popular statement and get your down vote fingers ready but I want to see Nintendo finally gone the way of Sega soon. I don't want to buy another one of your gimmicky novelty items that sits and collects dust - and then manages to break from seemingly NON use! Just make your boring franchise games for some real systems and end it already. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Hate the N. Used to love the N since 1986. But hate the N.
