Mass Effect 3 will arrive later than expected, BioWare has announced. A nebulous new release date is to be found somewhere within "the first three months of 2012."
Executive producer Casey Hudson addressed fans on the game's official forums, writing, "The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations." A new Shepard team photo was sent out alongside the announcement, but don't take those heroic and steadfast poses as conciliation. (It's clear only one of them is Asari.)
Before you storm off to Twitter and document 2011's ruination, we ought to point out that there's some relief to be found in this news. When we last consulted the office's crystal ball and requested a peek at our prestigious Game of the Year 2011 award ceremonies, we were greeted by a gruesome portent: a bloodied, pockmarked urban battlefield littered with expired game critics, internet commenters, torn N7 hoodies and ... spongy cake detritus. Perhaps this is for the best.

That should give them the extra time they need to suck out even more RPG elements.

I just felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

I'm not distraught about it at all! This is a good thing. Gives me more time to pull the wool over my spouse's eyes about how much I spend on games.
You're just wrong.

Man, I don't even understand what people mean when criticizing ME2 for "less RPG elements."
Sure, the leveling up was less specific, but I thought there was plenty of role-playing considering you CHOOSE EVERY LINE OF DIALOGUE

That's horribly ironic, since ME is one of the series that DON'T let you pick what you say. You just pick a general thing and then your character says something you can't possibly predict. ME is horrible for role playing, because you're never fully in control of your character.
And the delay will probably only be good, because it has a short enough development cycle as it is.

haha that's an awesome link! I often think about this myself: if Baldur's Gate could be made 10 years ago with the technology we have today, what would it have looked like? I think RPGs like that still exist but they have a lower Profile. The Eschalon games are fun! You should try them!

Words cannot possibly express my contempt for people like you. The whole point of RPGs is to immerse yourself in another character and another world. The story and character and choice are what make an rpg, not the battle system. MASS EFFECT 2 is an excellent example of how rpgs are should be done because not only is the story good and it gives you an excellent degree of control over the fates of the characters, but it even manages to have decent combat.
For decades we had to subsist on crappy battle systems and floating numbers and dice rolls out of nostalgia to tabletop games, who only had those conventions because there was no other way to reliably simulate combat. Games have no such problem. You are clinging to a stopgap.
Bioware is offering you a flying car and you are griping because it isn't drawn by horses.

Haha, watch as the idiots downvote you for stating clear facts. What, does it make you sad to have someone tell you that Mass Effect, by definition, isn't much of an RPG? You never know what your character will say or do next, aside from the basic walking and shooting. It's not role playing if you can't actually decide what your character will say.
And don't get me started on the QTEs (oh, wait, "interrupts"). They need to show you what the hell they do before you press them. Some are obvious, but others require magical powers if you want to know what will happen before you press the button.
It's not role playing when you have essentially no control over what your character does.

@Jodash64 There's a lot more to an RPG than choosing dialogue but if you're happy to let that define the experience for you then that's fair enough. It's just a bit harsh to slam others because they would like more.

@Jodash64 NO, had I chosen every line of dialogue there is zero chance Kaiden or Ashley (depending on which Shep I was using) would have stayed on Horizon in a huff. You were railroaded and there were literally a half dozen well reasoned arguments that could have been made instead of basically intentionally antagonizing them.
It was an unfortunate reality for ME2 being the middle chapter in a choose your own adventure, but you were definitely on rails.

Dear god, what is up with these mass down votes of the truth >_>'
I feel there are many EA employees working here, or just people that have not really played a "classic" RPG.
Having said that, I did enjoy playing through ME/ME2.... the way they actually let intimidate/ charm be useful, etc.
But let's face it, compared to the old greats they're nothing (200hrs min for BG2?...Conv scripts that were freaking HUGE......)

@Uberdave Yeah just like the choice of arguing on Horizon better than basically engaging in personal attacks...or for that matter the choice of trying to make clear the mission where MOST of the people that KNOW for a fact that ancient genocidal monsters are coming can't be arsed to help. Or the choice of working with Cerberus at all.
And reliably simulate combat? REALLY? So if I shoot someone they will always suffer the same abstract damage and everyone has the same tolerance for injury? Maybe head shots where the slim chance of an alternative to a target being neutralized isn't relevant, but you sure as hell can have wildly different results from similarly place shots. And if we ARE going to have that abstraction, then why not give the player a peak as to how those numbers interact? In real life there is plenty of data that could give you objective measures as to the effectiveness of guns.

I was disagreeing with you, but the magis is I wasn't being an asshole about it, nor did I downvote you. More importantly, I complimented you and a link well served. That's a funny picture. The problem with Joystiq and the Internet in general is it's really easy for people to go "Eff you you're stupid" and downvote without considering what the other person is saying. But fear not! The last people on earth I give a shit for the opinions of is reactionary Joystiq readers... except for maybe Bradwart.

I think the point being missed is that regardless of genre, or genre bending in this case, the game is still quite fun and enjoyed by many.

One of the things I've noticed about Joystiq is that the downvotes are almost all towards anything that isn't "rah rah rah this game rocks."
Fact is the system is designed in such a way that the fanboys can eliminate anyone they don't like from the debate.
Frankly, it's something I don't like about the set up on joystiq.
Yes, it's designed to eliminate flamers, but often times people just saying unpopular truths get drowned in the mess.

That's ridiculous. What they're really doing is trying to find a way to make the shooting sections even more linear and corridor-like.
