Without a single Japanese composer on the list I'd have to say it's awfully short of "basically every game composer ever". Hell, it doesn't even have Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, who are probably my favorite American game composers.

I was just about to say that. Not to undermine western video game composers, but when you have A) not a single Japanese composer and B) not even an exhaustive list of western composers, it's difficult to think of this is "every game composer ever".

Norihiko Hibino is a big omission too. Him and Gregson-Williams may not have as many games under their belt, but the MGS soundtracks are some of the most iconic and memorable scores out there.

I'm pretty sure Norihiko Hibino falls under the blanket description of "Japanese composers". Also, you can't forget Akihiro Honda if you're talking about Metal Gear soundtracks.

My favorite Western VG composer is probably Jeremy Soule (Total Annihilation, Icewind Dale, Oblivion, and many others).

But, TBH, I prefer the old chip music.

That game had hands down the best soundtrack to a game ever

Agreed. Every composer my ass. I've always found the Japanese stuff more memorable - Western game music is pretty generic, on the whole.

When I saw Mass Effect in the Press Release, I thought "Holy hell a chance to meet Jack Wall!". When I saw it said Richard Jacques I felt a tad bit sad. Oh well I can still meet Jesper Kyd.

Right! If we're all on the bandwagon of calling out omissions we have to mention Jack Wall. He's really the reason Mass Effect has such a great soundtrack. Though I feel ME1 was better than ME2. Still, this list credits it to Richard Jacques. He may have played a part but Jack is the main composer. Also did another great Bioware - Jade Empire.

"Basically EVERY game composer ever"?
I don't even like most of these games.
Where is Motoi Sakuraba, Noriyuki Iwadare, Nobuo Uematsu, Akira Yamaoka, AND WHERE THE HELL is Jeremy Soule?

Seriously now, you should change the post title. I don't appreciate such over-generalizations. NOT HERE. Not on Joystiq. There's Kotaku for that shit.

@yoshinatsu I don't want to live in a world without hyperbole. A world without hyperbole would be a barren hellscape.

Hope I didn't freak you out. It won't really be a barren hellscape!

YES. Just plain yes, man.

And hey -- Richard Deenen's not on this list. My god, not even the uber mainstream David Wise. What is this? I feel I've been trolled.

But the idea's rad -- I would make absolutely SURE to attend a panel with guys like Deenen, Chackey, Hiroyuki Yanada, Jeroen Tel, that mysterious composer at Fox Productions...

I'm scanning my vast 80gb iTunes library for any of those musicians and I'm not coming up with anything. No Koji Kondo on that list either.

Unnecessary and Superfluous hyperbole is unnecessary and superfluous.

Seriously, Morrowind was awesome, Oblivion was awesomer and Prey was totally awesome in its own unique way. To protest him not being their I'm not going. And looking at my schedule I am supposed to be twenty minutes from there on that date, with a hefty hour and a half window open to kill time.

Yeah, Inon Zur is a great up and coming artist on my radar. He did the music for Dragon Age obviously. Then I discovered he also did work for the MMO Rift, Fallout 3/Vegas, and Crysis!

They should change the title to "meet some composers". Someone got tad bit too excited.

I'm sorry, but no Yasunori Mitsuda, or Akira Yamaoka means no me attending.

Oh, you mean "Meet every game composer who has made super popular mainstream game music even though the games have either been rated badly or the soundtracks offering nothing that good".
Because I'm not seeing the Castlevania composers in there and about 100 other brilliant composers.

Aaaaaannndd someone finally took it too far.

Obviously the "basically every composer ever" thing was way off, but let's not undermine what the guys who will be there have accomplished. Many of the games represented here had fantastic soundtracks. Just because they didn't come from Japan or from some obscure game doesn't mean that they weren't fantastic.

Nope, not at all.

The article says "Meet basically every game composer ever...." then went on to list a few people who have been in a few successful, modern games. No Koji Kondo, nobody from Konami, nobody from Sega.

My reaction was fully justified to what is possibly the worst headline from Joystiq in ever.

I did. It was godawfully generic, like most western composers.
Funny too that I've worked with some of those above mentioned names and we've had a few beers between us. But the ultimate best musicians of all time? No sir. Not at all.

Basically every game composer ever = A handful of composers. Sorry Griffs, post title FAIL, it doesn't work, not even as a joke.
I'm hellbent on listening to the classic Megaman series right now and I don't see the likes of Yuukichan's Papa, Bun Bun, Ojalin, Mari or Yuko (gotta love old Capcom).
