Ironic.

The game is under ten dollars but it takes a little under a thousand to get the best experience.

Ironic.

The game is under ten dollars yet the experience is still more fun than Crysis 2 was on either of the consoles.

Ironic. You're wrong.

I can max Crysis and I only spent $600 on my gaming PC and I am able to max Crysis and play it quite comfortably at 1920x1080... Oh, and I got a $200 "rebate" by selling parts from my old setup. So make that $400 in the end. If you take a chance on rebates (my success record is 60% but falling) you can save even more, $50-$100 on average.

560 Ti, X4 925, 8GB DDR3 memory, Antec PSU, cheap case.

I could have saved even more money with I went with an ATI card.

So... shut up and stop spewing misinformed filth.

PC gaming is affordable and when you add in the MASSIVE savings of the games themselves, even when Steam is not involved, you end up saving in the end or at least breaking even when compared to consoles.

If you build it yourself (My mother can do it now after being showed and coached not to fear anything technology related...) you'll save a boat load of money if you know when to buy and where to buy.

Go.Figure.

@Mmmmz

I would also like to add that even if you don't max out a game on PC, generally, medium settings look better than the console counterparts and high certainly does.

Most games don't need AA to be maxed, you barely notice a difference after 8x with most games, which is a killer for requirements, moreso with nvidia cards.

So, here I am, happily whoring myself to Steam and Amazon, saving money and playing games that look better, most of the time, than the console version.

Also, I can play next gen titles with lower settings. Hmm...

I'm not a fanboy of anything, I have a PS3, wii, 360, PC, but people need to stop crapping on PCs when they're generally wrong.

@Mmmmz - He said "The best experience". With that criteria, he's correct. You can't max out Crysis at the new standard resolutions (1080p, 1200p, etc) with a PC that is much under a grand. If you re-use your case, hard drive, and other components, it becomes cheaper surely, but you still need a GPU in the $300-500 range in order to crank up the settings (AA especially) on a game like Crysis at that resolution.

I'm looking at speccing a computer right now for next-gen gaming (newer DX11 games like BF3 specifically) and I'm not coming out of this at less than $800, if I want to max settings at my resolution (I game on a 46", 1080p TV that I use as a monitor). $200 for the processor (2500k), about $130 for the motherboard, maybe another $100 for the RAM, $70 for the PSU (my old 430w isn't going to cut it), and maybe $300 to $350 for the GPU (there is a GTX 580 on sale for $360 today, and I'm tempted). Even that isn't enough to future proof, because there are already games like Metro 2033 where that configuration can chug. As you can see, I'm re-using an HDD, and a case. Add in those costs, and you've easily got another hundred or more.

Building a gaming rig is certainly cheaper than a lot of people make it out to be. Building one that can max out games though (at high resolutions, and with "max" referring to multiple MSAA passes, and a lot of AF, etc) costs quite a bit more. It's doable for under a grand (more so if you game at sub 1080p) but not by much.

I can understand why some people opt to just spend $200-300 on a PS3 or 360 and call it a day. It's cheaper, it's more convenient, and the upgrade cycle is more like five years instead of two.

Don't tale this for anything else than speculation, but Steam copies of games generally have things like Securom excluded, but even when it is included the store page is usually very explicitly labelled. However, that could vary by publisher.

some point I will have to join the legions of Steam.. Game Digital has it for £25.. I'll wait it out a little longer while I'm playing other things (I don't get how Steam achievements vs PC achievents works out.. I'd rather add to my gamercard than a new score system..too lazy to look too)

@Mazrael PCs have two different achievement systems, Steam and Games for Windows Live. If you have an Xbox, GFWL uses the same account info so your achievements will show up on both Xbox and GFWL. Steam achievements are only for Steam so you won't see them anywhere else, although the new Portal 2 release on PS3 is blurring the line somewhat.

@Cranky Penguin So it's selectable in some way? as long as I have both steam and GFWL on my PC, I could buy from steam and use my gamer card, or buy from GFW or Game & choose to use steam lists? but not both at the same time?

@Mazrael

No its not interconnected at all. Steam achievements are only for select steam games and gfwl games have their own achievements that can be tied to an xbox live account if you wish.

That being said, I used to be like you and really enjoy achievements but the more I got the more I realized I wasn't having that much fun getting most of them. Quite often I would run through a game with a guide that ruined the whole mood and fun of the game just so I can "complete" it and move onto the next game. I love achievements but I now only go after the ones in games I really enjoy and want to get more life out of.

I don't know how you play games but try not to let achievements get in the way of playing a great game and having good old fashioned fun.

Yeah I'm at that point and its actually quite refreshing to realize that I can actually save a lot of money while still having semi-new experiences while waiting.

I love steam sales and I find that after spending a fair amount on the sales and accumulating 140+ games, I don't seem to be reaching for my wallet much anymore. Sometimes I love having a decent gaming pc!

I said BEST meaning MAXIMUM SPECS for Crysis.

Are you such a PC elitist that you put words in my mouth because I never said anything about PC gaming being overly expensive.

What I said was to max Crysis you are sitting at around a thousand.

So you sir, need to calm down.

Considering still playing through Portal 2 (Ch 9 - should be finished this weekend - but then commentary?), and bought Mass Effect yesterday, as well as having a backlog of games on Steam and consoles, oh, and my laptop probably couldn't cope with this.

I'll skip this for now anyway. Later on I'll decide then.

Yo dawg I heard you like animuses so we put an animus in yo animus so you can assassinate while you assassinate...

Strange that this game is pulling an Inception, but then again the AC series' plotline was strange to begin with. Still really excited, though I want to see a proper AC3. And hopefully, one day, we'll have a game that stars Desmond... that would be awesome.
