Dear Sir, I ask you:

Are zombies any more overused than any other video game genre cliches, like gentlemen shooting guns from a first person perspective, or two gentlemen beating each other up in an enclosed 2D or 3D space until one's life bar is drained?

Or are you just taking the opportunity to jump on the currently fashionable zombie-hate bandwagon?

I await your reply.

Sincerely,
GentlemanWrath

I don't think the comparison is fair. Zombie games aren't a genre like a fighter or FPS. Zombies are a topic or subject matter rather than a gaming category. A fair comparison instead would be zombies vs space marines... or ninjas.

or how about pirates vs ninjas!!

@GentlemanWrath I completely disagree but I still upvoted you for your posting style combined with your avatar/username.

@Morisato13 I was going to say, he's not wrong if you compare zombies to like, WW2 in FPSs or the influx of post apocolyptic games lately. For the record, while I think zombies are overused, there will always be fantastic uses of them in certain games (L4D comes to mind.), as opposed to the usual trifle that some companies insist on pumping out.

That being said though, this game does look like another "me too" rather than a solid effort.

Uff... Thanks for setting him straight... I guess some don't know the difference between a genre and a topic (subject matter, as you said). Nevertheless, I bid you, good day, GentlemanWrath!

While I see your point, it still doesn't change the fact that zombies are overused in everything from first person shooters, to real time strategies, to (what seems to be) everything in entertainment nowadays. I am just sick and tired of the zombie fad.

I see your point, sir, as well as my questionable use of the word "genre" but you bring up a good point: Aren't space marines just as overused as zombies? I say yes, but yet we don't see the same type of growing disdain for space marines.

I'm certainly not trying to say one is better than the other or that people aren't entitled to their opinions. It's just an interesting case of zombies seemingly being singled out as overused, when we can say the same thing about so many archetypes/scenarios/etc. in games. As in literature, there are only so many original stories you can tell, then it becomes a matter of putting an original spin on something that's been done a million times before. Some succeed, others become just another boring rehash.

At the end of the day, it's the gameplay and the fun factor that should matter most.

I see your point too, sir. I think perhaps I just have a penchant for zombies in games and film, as long as they're done well, so it doesn't bother me to the same degree. However, you are fully entitled to your opinion and we shall respectfully disagree about the overuse issue.

@Pugnaciousturtle

You're absolutely right in saying that a select few do manage to use zombies (or WW2, or the post-apocalyptic scenario) in new and imaginative ways, while most are lost in the crowd. And it's those innovators that we should support because original thinking and ideas, even when dealing with an overused topic or scenario, should be encouraged in all forms of art.

I find it interesting that you feel that this game comes across as a "me too" type of game. I feel that the art style as well as the trap-setting set it apart from the usual "grab gun -- shoot zombie" pattern. Of course, that's based on an extremely short video clip. It could very well turn out to be more of the same old, same old.

To be fair, it's a supply & demand situation. People do still like zombies, regaurdless of how all the outspoken folks who rush to every single article relating to a zombie game yelling "OMG NOT MOAR ZOMBIES" may make it seem. If there was no interest, there would be no games. It honestly is that simple.
I'm not tired of the subject matter personally, but I also don't buy every single game or add on having to do with Zombies that comes out. Also, the "Oh look another Zombie Game" comments are just as worn out as the Zombie games themselves at this point. Pots vs Kettles.

What moral dilemma... Eating your fellow men would make you no better than the living dead. Not eating them might make you dead dead though.

@Yisrael Hmm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but anyway isn't there actually a survival horror zombie game coming out soon? The one based on an island resort and has the teaser video that plays the story form the start and end one going forwards and the other going in reverse?

I've lost count of how often this has came up... People enjoy various zombie experiences, be they as in depth as left 4 dead or as simple as mini gore, but consumers want fresh experiences all the time! And to me this game looks exactly like call of duty zombies, I'm not bashing it, but I don't see too much originality going off here, i look forward to seeing more however. But yes! We are all craving an open world zombie game with the features Yisrail mentioned and more, however I myself think it would be an interesting change of gameplay if it were in a 3rd person perspective.

A fighting game or an fps cannot be compared to zombie games. They are so much different. There like platformers or puzzle. Zombie is more to do with story.

Damn. I hate the past.
I wish there were games like this and GTA that took place in the future
Games are supposed to be about fantasy. And its more fantasy to have something that hasnt happened/been experienced yet than something we've already been through/have experienced.

And I HATE that fat kid. And every other annoying fat kid from movies
