They might raise it later. Like it says in the article, it used to be a $10 credit.

Dunno if they would change it twice. But speaking of the change does this apply to existing orders?

Typically, yes. If you look on their page, it usually has a blurb about "applies to all existing orders" or something in the credit info section.

Basically, Amazon is awesome.

@kojo87 SWEET. Imma do a cancel and re-order if that'll help. I wonder why they are doing this...pre-order numbers are currently too low?

FYI, as far as I know, you can't cancel a previous amazon order to which you applied a "credit for future purchase." (as in my current $21 pre-order on L.A. Noire). You technically lose the credit. They let me do that for a previously pre-order several months ago but they said, only as a courtesy. Otherwise...yeah...$6 L.A. Noire copy would've been nice.

God I love Amazon, how can they afford to do this? I still have credit from my last 3 games...

@jrolson - They can do it because Amazon credit isn't real money until you spend it. I'm sure that just like with gift cards, there are probably people out there that will never spend that gift credit. Other than that, it is a combination of Amazon getting games really cheap, their lack of overhead (no stores to run) and their desire to use video games and blu-ray discs as loss leaders.

God bless them for it.

@BananaBoat The credit auto-spends though, so I doubt it goes unspent unless that person is an unfrequent buyer of video games. In that case, really, how many of those customers would pre-order?

It used to have to be activated manually, but lately it's all automated.

@jrolson When you get credit for their store, it is very likely you'll buy your next game there. And the next, and the next...

With the used game market I think the real question is how can they not afford to? This locks customers into buying all of their games at Amazon since customers always end up with credit for a future purchase, its a great idea. I havent bought a game anywhere else in years because of the preorder bonus.

@aughscreennames

Their whole goal is to keep you buying....it's really bad b/c as a gamer, I don't even finish half the stuff I picked up this year already. It's cheap, but it's also easy to remind yourself that waiting also gives the same discount or better in about a month or two...

@EvoHelix Highly doubt Gamestop can compete against Amazon on this, especially at their retail stores. If anything, it'd be an online-only deal. Besides, would you rather take "game-only" credit at Gamestop or "any item" credit at Amazon?

@EvoHelix - Gamestop doesn't need to. They make most of their money on used games. A lot of games purchased at Amazon wind up getting traded into Gamestop, so they get a slice of the pie either way.

If that's the case why does GS always lobby for the highest value preorder DLC? They get plenty from new game purchases, they're they largest Brick and Mortar retailer of games in the country. If they're doing well with used games it just furthers their monopoly on the market.

The $15 can only be used for video games. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's just not what the article implies, that the credit can be used for anything.

Wrong. From the Amazon page:

"Pre-order L.A. Noire and receive a $15 promotional credit toward the purchase of items shipped and sold by Amazon.com (certain exclusions apply, including Kindle books, MP3s, and video rentals and downloads)"

@MC Double Def DP

I'm not sure why they specify "$15 Video Games Credit" in their Bonus Offer text then. If you look at the credit bonus for Brink, it only says "$10 Credit," no mention of video games. I guess they could have changed the offer and forgot the change the text but, whatever.

@TheDarkWayne - It's simple to cancel the previous pre-order and then redo it, so I wouldn't take the chance. In my experience though, the highest promotion credit (and the lowest price) is usually the one that ends up getting billed.

@TheDarkWayne - I have no idea. I've cancelled items I pre-ordered with amazon gift credit before, and the credit did get refunded (it was instant, if memory serves) but I wouldn't risk it.

In all likelihood, they'll give you the $15 credit. If they don't, you'll have to contact customer service to get it.

@TheDarkWayne That's tricky. It depends on what 'type' of credit you used to pre-order it initially. I know that seems arbitrary and it is. I don't know why some work differently than others.

Regardless, when I use gift card credit I've had to wait up to a 4-5 business days for it to refund, but I do recall it refunding other credits instantly.

On the other hand, I think you should be A-Okay, and the $15 credit will be automatically given to you. If not, I know for a fact if you take it up with customer service they will give it to you after the game ships! Amazon is very courteous and nice in that way.

@TheDarkWayne Amazon doesn't charge you anything when you pre-order. So any credit you have in your account will still be there until the purchase is final. You can swap pre-orders all day long, won't make a difference.

CREDITS EXPIRE. Becareful of canceling preorders that youve applied an old credit to. I learned this the hard way when I cancelled an old preorder to switch platforms (but I got it back since Amazon has good customer service). They only last around 3 months, if you are within the expiration then you can still cancel and the credit will be applied to your next purchase. Once you apply the credit to a preorder it will stay that price forever as long as you dont cancel it.

@rambo8 Unless it's something like a gold gun or some other texture change, DLC from Gamestop is never exclusive, it's always timed exclusive. The LA Noire preorder bonus for gamestop is a mission/side story dlc, I highly doubt that it's not going to be available to the public later on.

@rambo8 So just buy the extra DLC for a couple bucks when it gets put on the marketplace in a couple weeks. WIN!

Gamestop can throw all the exclusive virtual pre-order outfits it wants at me... I will go with the Amazon credit every time. Money talks. Getting LA Noire on day of launch for $40 (using my $20 from Portal 2), plus an extra $15 for a future game, AND it shows up at my door day of release? Gamestop DLC doesn't interest me anymore.

Rockstar has said in the past that all of the exclusive DLC will be released at a later time for all of their games. They did it with Red Dead and will end up doing it for L.A. Noire also.
